Goddess, Are You Blind? (GL) - Chapter 27
“Elder sister, you suspect it’s Qi Rui?” Zhang Shuai looked up at Ji Yun in surprise. He had also been helping her investigate these past days, but found nothing—only exhausting himself half to death.
“Didn’t you say you didn’t find anything?” Ji Yun raised her head with a smile and jabbed him playfully in the chest—sharp pain! “Qi Rui may be greedy, but his methods aren’t that refined. I do suspect him, but even if it’s him, there must be someone behind him.”
Zhang Shuai felt like his head was about to explode. This was way too convoluted. Clearly, surviving in the company’s upper ranks wasn’t easy.
Ji Yun glanced at the time and stood up. “Keep digging. If you find anything in the next few days, tell me directly, or just send the evidence to my email. I’m heading back.”
“Elder sister, are you busy these days?”
Ji Yun nodded. “Mm. The day after tomorrow I’m taking A’nian for surgery.”
Zhang Shuai nodded seriously. “Don’t worry, sister. I’ll help you get to the bottom of this.”
Ji Yun didn’t know what else to say. Finally, she picked up her bag and left.
When she got home, she saw Xue Funian sitting on the sofa, occasionally giving Bai Zhi some pointers. Bai Zhi was bent over his homework, and when he heard Ji Yun open the door, he didn’t even lift his head.
Xue Funian, however, smiled in Ji Yun’s direction. “You’re back, elder sister?”
Ji Yun looked at the long dress Xue Funian was still wearing and asked, “Did you go out?”
Xue Funian froze, realizing she had been sitting there since coming home, without even changing clothes. Being questioned like this left her momentarily dumbfounded.
At this, Bai Zhi finally looked up at Ji Yun. “Elder sister said Doggie’s leg isn’t well, so she asked me to take her out for a walk.”
Xue Funian chuckled and nodded along, as if to agree.
Ji Yun eyed Bai Zhi uncertainly, but finally put down her bag and sat beside Xue Funian. The sofa dipped under her weight, and Funian tensed with nerves.
“You went to see Cheng Jirui?”
Xue Funian was completely dumbstruck. Even Bai Zhi was stunned. Both of them widened their eyes, not daring to speak first.
Seeing their reaction only confirmed Ji Yun’s guess.
She leaned lazily against the sofa, narrowing her eyes.
“Elder sister, I…”
“You smell like coffee. You clearly went out, and not just downstairs for a walk. Apart from me, the only one you’d drink coffee with is Cheng Jirui. You’ve never let go of what happened when you were kidnapped. I think you went to him for help.”
Ji Yun shot Bai Zhi a sharp look. Bai Zhi was left speechless. This fox—what a waste she wasn’t a detective.
Xue Funian silently cursed Ji Yun in her heart for a while, but eventually surrendered, nodding. “I just didn’t want you exhausting yourself for my sake, not that I don’t trust you.”
These past two months, at first Funian had thought Ji Yun had ulterior motives. But after living together, she realized—if anyone else had designs on her, she’d believe it. But not Ji Yun. Ji Yun couldn’t possibly covet what she held.
So she wanted to clarify things quickly—not to make Ji Yun overthink.
Ji Yun merely glanced at her, then stood and went into the bathroom.
Soon the sound of running water came. Funian sat back down on the sofa, listless and at a loss what to do.
Bai Zhi glanced at the bathroom door, snorted, and muttered arrogantly, “Let’s see how long she can keep it in.”
He knew Ji Yun’s temperament well enough. So instead of meddling, he turned to Funian and explained, “She’s just sulking. She’ll act like nothing happened soon.”
That only made Funian more flustered, twisting the fabric of her dress in her hands for a long time, without knowing what to do.
Bai Zhi sighed and stopped interfering.
When Ji Yun came back out, her hair was still damp. She roughly toweled it and sat back down beside Funian. Seeing her fidget endlessly with her dress, Ji Yun said nothing. But the curve of her lips betrayed her mood.
Bai Zhi rolled his eyes, grabbed his homework, and headed upstairs. “I’ll be in the study.”
With him gone, the room grew even quieter. Funian said nothing, Ji Yun said nothing. It seemed awkward, but inwardly Ji Yun was secretly pleased.
“I’m sorry, elder sister,” Funian finally lowered her head, her voice soft. After that, silence again.
Ji Yun’s smile widened. She suddenly pulled Funian into her arms. “I know you didn’t want me to be too busy or too tired for your sake, that’s why you went to Cheng Jirui.”
Funian nodded.
“But I really don’t like you meeting him.”
Funian was stunned.
“A’nian, think about it. So many people want the shares you hold. How can you be sure Cheng Jirui isn’t scheming too?”
Funian thought about it—it made sense.
Seeing her dazed, Ji Yun changed the subject. “After dinner tonight, we’re going to the hospital. The operation’s the day after tomorrow. Are you scared?”
Her voice was low and warm, and when it reached Funian’s ears, her lingering anxiety suddenly lifted. After a moment, she shook her head.
“Nothing could be worse than now. No, I’m not afraid.”
She was telling the truth. If the surgery failed, she’d still be blind—just like now. But if it succeeded, she’d gain sight, a windfall.
Ji Yun patted her hand. “Don’t be afraid. I’m here.”
Upstairs, Bai Zhi got goosebumps. Who knew this rough, blunt Ji Yun could say such sappy things?
After Bai Qing came back and finished cooking, they ate. Then Ji Yun drove Funian to the hospital.
They needed to run more tests tomorrow, so that night they stayed.
In the private ward with only one bed, Funian lay down, hands neatly folded on her stomach, staring at the ceiling.
After discussing with the doctor outside, Ji Yun came in and saw her like that.
Ji Yun smiled helplessly. That posture—hands flat on her stomach—was always Funian’s go-to when she was nervous.
She walked over and patted Funian’s hand. “Move over a bit.”
Funian didn’t understand, but shifted as told. Immediately, she felt someone lie down beside her. She was about to speak when Ji Yun pressed her head into her arms.
The bed was small to begin with; two people squeezed together made it even tighter.
Funian blinked in shock. “Elder sister?”
“Just tired,” Ji Yun yawned, holding her close, not letting go.
Funian dared not move, afraid of bumping into her. On such a small bed, even the tiniest shift could cause a collision.
Ji Yun looked down at the girl in her arms, so cautious and stiff it amused her.
“A’nian, you say you’re not scared, but that’s a lie. Why can’t you just tell me the truth?”
Funian stiffened. She really did often hide her true feelings—especially the ones that might worry Ji Yun. Ji Yun was already overwhelmed on her behalf; how could she add to it with words like “I’m nervous”?
But since she didn’t answer, Ji Yun just chuckled.
“When you’re nervous, you grab at things around you—clothes, hands. And if you’re lying down, you put your hands properly on your stomach, as if that posture could hide your tension.”
Funian thought about it, then let her hands fall away. She nodded. “I am a little nervous. I do want to see again—to see all the places I haven’t yet, to finally see what Doggie looks like, and to see if elder sister has become even more beautiful.”
“You sweet talker,” Ji Yun laughed, closing her eyes. “Don’t be afraid. You’ll see. And if you don’t, I’ll see for you.”
Her voice grew softer and softer until it faded into sleep.
Funian tilted her head, puzzled. “Elder sister?”
She whispered again, but Ji Yun didn’t move—only the sound of her even breathing came.
Funian sighed softly. She must be exhausted, falling asleep so quickly.
Recalling her earlier words, Funian fell into a daze. Ji Yun had said similar things before, but each time, her heart skipped a beat. And oddly—it felt comforting.
That unexpected feeling left her bewildered.
Thinking and thinking, she too drifted off, the tension washed away.
The next day passed. When Funian was being pushed into the operating room, she clutched Ji Yun’s hand tightly, without saying a word.
Ji Yun squeezed back, bent down, and whispered in her ear. The warmth of her breath made Funian’s ear itch.
“A’nian, don’t be afraid. I’ll be waiting for you outside.”
Funian nodded and slowly loosened her grip, but Ji Yun quickly caught her hand again. “Don’t be afraid. I’m here.”
Her repeated reassurance betrayed her own nervousness.
Sensing it, Funian calmed. She smiled, holding Ji Yun’s hand.
“Elder sister, wait for me.”
“I will,” Ji Yun answered without hesitation.
Then, as the nurse pushed Funian inside, Ji Yun stood outside staring at the glowing words “In Surgery.”
Her hands hung loosely at her sides, twisting the hem of her clothes.
