Goddess, Are You Blind? (GL) - Chapter 4
The next day, Ji Yun woke up early. Propping her head on one hand, she glanced at Xue Funian still sleeping beside her. At last, she looked like someone sleeping properly—curled up, no longer as stiff and uneasy as the night before.
Thinking of how restrained she had been yesterday, lying with her hands neatly folded over her stomach, Ji Yun couldn’t help but laugh a little.
She carefully sat up, changed into loose clothes, and tiptoed out of the bedroom. After cooking some lean meat congee, and once everything was almost ready, she went back upstairs, sat on the edge of the bed, and softly called, “Anian.”
Funian was always a light sleeper. If Ji Yun hadn’t been so cautious earlier, afraid to wake her, she probably would have stirred long ago.
Now, with just that gentle call, her eyes flew open at once, though all that met her was blankness.
She sighed inwardly. Every time she woke up, she opened her eyes wide, hoping for even the tiniest trace of light. But when she did, all she found was endless darkness. What she saw in dreams—that was all it was, a dream she hadn’t woken from.
“Jiejie.” Funian fumbled around until Ji Yun caught her hand first.
“I’m right here. Come on, I made porridge for you.” As she spoke, Ji Yun laid out the clothes she had specially asked someone to fetch from the Xue household. Thinking again that Funian couldn’t see them, she realized she had to dress her herself.
“Anian, let’s change your clothes.” Ji Yun patted her arm lightly, signaling her to raise her hands.
Funian flushed, embarrassed.
Since she was little, she had always dressed herself. Sometimes she even put her clothes on inside out, and her mother wouldn’t correct her, letting her go off to school like that. It was only after careless classmates laughed that she’d return home red-faced and in tears.
Now, twenty years later, someone was dressing her again for the first time. It left her flustered and shy.
“What’s there to be shy about? I’ll have to help you bathe later too.” Ji Yun said it without thinking, but Funian heard it all too clearly. Her lips moved soundlessly for a long while before she changed the subject.
“Are we going out today?”
“Mhm. I’ll go handle something first, then come back to get you. Stay home, listen to some music, and wait for me. For now, have some porridge.” Ji Yun’s patience with her never seemed to run out; she explained everything gently.
Funian’s skin was soft and pale, and Ji Yun couldn’t resist giving her cheek a playful pinch. “Look at that—so young, so smooth you could squeeze water out of it.”
She didn’t notice the flush spreading deeper across Funian’s face. She just focused on fastening her buttons neatly before leading her out of bed.
“I can do the pants myself.”
Ji Yun blinked, then burst out laughing. The more she laughed, the more delighted she became, until she reached out and patted Funian’s head. “We’ve got the same bodies. What’s there to be afraid of? Go on then, do it yourself.”
Flustered, Funian fumbled for her shorts. Blind as she was, she still managed to slide her legs in by touch, though in the end she needed Ji Yun’s help to stand straight and pull them on properly.
Ji Yun watched the whole process—the fading flush on her cheeks, her bowed head as she fastened her buttons in shy silence, and then finally her red-faced smile as she lifted her head.
“All done?”
“Mhm.” She answered softly, then pressed her lips together in a small smile toward Ji Yun.
“Come on.” Ji Yun led her out of the bedroom, sat her down, then ran into the kitchen to bring out the porridge she had prepared. “Eat this first. Leave the bowl on the table when you’re done—I’ll clean it later. I have to step out now, but I’ll come back to pick you up.”
“Jiejie.” Funian caught her hand. “Aren’t you eating breakfast before you go?”
“It’s fine. You just be good, eat, then curl up on the sofa. I’ll be right back. Don’t worry.” Ji Yun tugged playfully at her cheek, relishing the feel of that soft skin. “If you miss me, call me. I got you a simple phone—just press and hold the number 1 key, and it’ll call me.”
Grabbing her bag, she slipped into her high heels. At the door, she poked her head back in. “Anian, don’t be scared. Call me if anything happens.”
“Mhm. Go on, jiejie.”
Hearing her reply, Ji Yun finally shut the door and headed to the garage. Driving off, she found herself humming, her mood light and easy.
Left alone, Funian soon grew restless. She had always spent time by herself—her brother Xue Yu was too busy to talk with her, her mother often went shopping with friends.
She had a few good friends once, but since graduating, everyone had gone their own way. Now she was truly idle, left with silence.
It hadn’t bothered her before. But now, sitting alone, the quiet pressed heavy on her.
She thought of reading—but her eyes… She thought of making tea—but she didn’t even know where things were placed anymore.
So she curled into the corner of the sofa, felt around for the headphones Ji Yun had left her, and put them on.
Ji Yun had queued up some audio dramas for her. She had no idea where the story was when she joined—it was confusing, bits and pieces out of context, but slowly she drifted into drowsiness.
It wasn’t until the sound of the door opening reached her that she sat up cross-legged, head tilted toward the noise.
“Jiejie, you’re back?” She didn’t get up; she knew it would only send her stumbling. Better to sit quietly and wait.
Hearing her greeting, Ji Yun smiled. “Mhm, I’m back.”
She kicked off her shoes, crossed the room in a couple of steps, and sank down beside her, grabbing the glass of water she had left for Funian earlier.
Feeling the sofa dip, Funian smiled. Hearing Ji Yun gulp water noisily, she fumbled for tissues on the table and handed them over.
“Hot outside?”
“Mm, hot.” Ji Yun muttered between gulps, then drank again. “Let me sit a bit, then we’ll head out, okay?”
Funian chuckled, shoving the tissues into her hand. “No rush. Rest first.”
“There is a rush—you’ll love your gift.”
“Jiejie.” Funian grew anxious. “You’ve already brought blind me back here. That’s the best gift I could ever have. You don’t need to—”
“Anian, I never noticed you could be so talkative. You’re usually so quiet. Much cuter like this.” Ji Yun pouted in mock complaint, but her lips quickly curved upward, her mood brightening again.
Funian flushed, suddenly self-conscious. She couldn’t see Ji Yun’s smile, but she knew she’d spoken more than usual. It embarrassed her.
Ji Yun took the tissues, wiped her face, then turned to look at Funian’s shy, delicate expression. It only lifted her spirits further.
“Come on, let’s go see your new gift.” She stood, pulling Funian up with her.
Carefully, she guided her, first placing shoes at her feet and brushing her instep to signal where they were. Funian’s heart warmed at the thoughtfulness, and she quickly slipped them on.
Just as she stood, Ji Yun’s hands slid around her waist, steadying her, leading her forward.
Though held, Funian was still nervous. Without sight, every step felt precarious.
Ji Yun didn’t rush her. Patiently, she guided her, warning her of steps or obstacles as they moved.
At last, they made it to the car. Ji Yun let out a quiet sigh of relief.
This was Funian’s first real outing since being discharged, apart from visiting “River City.” Listening to the sounds of traffic outside, her heart, which had been racing, slowly steadied.
Glancing sideways as she drove, Ji Yun saw her gripping her clothes nervously. She eased the speed, careful not to startle her. Soon enough, she saw Funian relax, a small smile tugging at her lips at the sound of horns and engines outside.
She stayed quiet all the way until the car stopped, as if in response to Ji Yun’s earlier teasing about her chatter.
Ji Yun sneaked a glance, then carefully helped her out, locking the car before leading her forward.
Funian didn’t ask where they were going. She just let Ji Yun guide her, until they entered somewhere hushed and quiet. She frowned, straining her other senses, but still couldn’t tell where she was.
Ji Yun, delighted, placed her hand onto something soft, warm, and furry.
Startled, Funian froze. The unknown was frightening. But then she reminded herself—Ji Yun would never harm her. Bravely, she stroked it.
The fluffy creature beneath her palm was gentle and still. She ran her hand over its head and down its back, then lifted her face toward Ji Yun with a smile.
The sunlight was just right, her smile dazzling—so much so that Ji Yun stared, momentarily lost.
“…Is it a dog?”
