- Chapter 3.2 - Don’t Show Up in Front of Me
Jiang Yanming took a sip of his cold Americano, never adding sugar, used to its taste.
But this time, it felt bitter, spreading in his mouth.
He put down his phone, turning his head to the window.
The sky was almost dark.
Someone with a fear of darkness hadn’t felt this way in a long time.
At five p.m., Zhi Yu Barbecue opened half an hour earlier than usual, but business hours started at five-thirty.
Gu Qingzhi and Qin Yu arrived at the shop one after the other.
“Set up now, we’re opening indoors and outdoors today.”
Qin Yu nodded, lifting a table.
“Do we have enough staff? Seriously, we need to hire more. It was busy enough before, and with extra seats, it’ll be chaos.”
Gu Qingzhi, standing on the steps, pointed to the empty space ahead.
“Put it there, two tables on each side, and a small one up front.”
Then, he stepped down, lifting a table himself.
“They’re all coming today, but we should close early, or it’ll be too tiring.”
“Yeah, without shifts, we should close early. Midnight?”
“Fine.”
Gu Qingzhi said, “I’m thinking about hiring. They mentioned friends who want to work here. I’ll ask them later. Not too many, three or four for now.”
Qin Yu took a chair from Gu Qingzhi’s hands, set it down, and looked at him.
“Sounds good, you decide. But that means we can’t rest for a few days.”
“I’m fine.”
He looked up.
“How’s Xiao Ji doing? When can he start on his own?”
Xiao Ji was learning to grill with Qin Yu.
He’d just started college and worked here for extra money.
Qin Yu said quickly, “He’s doing well, no issues now. A few more days, and he can take shifts. But he’s still in school, so before ten is better for him.”
“You good with that?”
That meant Qin Yu would handle the later shifts alone.
Qin Yu laughed, walking to Gu Qingzhi’s side.
“Who’re you underestimating? Not bragging, but I can handle it alone.”
Gu Qingzhi glanced at him.
“Want to hire one more?”
“Nah, we’re just starting, no extra money. Let’s stick with this. When we make more, we’ll plan.”
Qin Yu grinned, saying, “Then we’ll just chill, collect money, and pay wages.”
Their barbecue shop was new, and though business was good, actual profits were slim.
They had rent, wages, and supplies to buy, all costing money.
Standing beside Gu Qingzhi, Qin Yu looked up and noticed his hair partially blocking his view.
Every time they met, Gu Qingzhi’s hair was clean and smooth, slightly shorter in the middle, parted at the forehead, the rest soft and touchable, hanging over his head.
He raised a finger, casually lifting a strand of his hair.
“Your hair needs a trim, huh?”
“I’ll cut it in a few days.”
Gu Qingzhi tilted his head, dodging his finger.
“Let’s go check inside.”
Qin Yu lightly placed a hand on his shoulder.
Gu Qingzhi turned, but at that moment, a loud door slam came from behind.
Qin Yu turned first, glancing at the man but quickly drawn to his understated luxury car.
Though not particularly famous, car enthusiasts would know the car was expensive, seven figures.
Gu Qingzhi’s steps froze in that instant, his eyes flashing white.
As he slowly turned, he took in the man’s appearance bit by bit.
Jiang Yanming wore a black coat, all in black.
Except for his face, he really felt like a debt collector.
But debt collectors wouldn’t be this good-looking.
Gu Qingzhi stood in place, looking up at his approaching figure, suppressing his emotions, though he didn’t even know what he was feeling.
He just wanted to act as usual, indifferent to everything.
In those few steps, Jiang Yanming walked toward Gu Qingzhi without pausing.
Standing in front of him, his gaze shifted from his face, slowly landing on Qin Yu’s hand, staring intently for two seconds before looking at the stranger before him.
Qin Yu instantly sensed the man’s hostility, his glare like he was ready to fight.
Confused, he couldn’t hold back.
“Bro, what’s your deal?”
Before Jiang Yanming could reply, the hand left Gu Qingzhi’s shoulder—not because Qin Yu pulled back, but because Gu Qingzhi stepped forward, face cold.
“What are you doing here?”
He asked, not in a friendly tone.
Gu Qingzhi looked up at him, all too familiar with the expression he’d just shown.
Jiang Yanming shifted his gaze, his expression softening instantly.
“Came to find you.”
Those three words stunned Gu Qingzhi in place.
His eyes panicked at the man’s gaze, but only for a brief moment.
The panic tightened, instantly making people want to keep their distance.
Gu Qingzhi took a breath, his tone harsher.
“Find me for what?”
He couldn’t let him answer, so he didn’t pause.
“I told you, we’re not meeting again. Yesterday was an accident, so leave. Don’t show up in front of me.”
