Has The Live-in Alpha Stepped Up - Chapter 9
9: Taking Her Home
After dinner.
A nurse came to notify them for a follow-up examination.
An Yizhu and Yu Guqiu were taken to separate examination rooms designated for Alphas and Omegas, respectively.
By the time An Yizhu returned, she only saw Lin Meng helping Yu Guqiu pack her things in the ward.
“Ahem—”
Since Lin Meng had been unfriendly during the day, An Yizhu chose to clear her throat first, trying to get her attention.
Lin Meng continued to ignore her. She had actually heard An Yizhu enter the room but simply didn’t want to acknowledge her.
But since An Yizhu couldn’t find Yu Guqiu in the room, she had no choice but to ask, “Lin Meng, where’s Yu Guqiu?”
Lin Meng answered dismissively, “She’s not back yet.”
At that moment, Aunt Fang emerged from the adjacent room, carrying An Yizhu’s colorful backpack. It seemed she had just finished packing An Yizhu’s belongings.
Aunt Fang said to An Yizhu, “Xiao Qiu went up to the rooftop to get some fresh air. She asked us to call her once we’re done packing.”
Lin Meng looked at Aunt Fang in surprise, not understanding why she was telling An Yizhu this.
An Yizhu immediately dashed out, saying, “Thanks, Aunt Fang! It looks like you’re almost done packing. I’ll go call Yu Guqiu.”
Lin Meng grew anxious and asked, “Aunt Fang, why didn’t you stop her? How close is she to President Yu anyway? The new project failed again, and President Yu is in a bad mood. She went to the rooftop to clear her head—she doesn’t want to be disturbed. Why would An Yizhu go and provoke her?”
Listening to Lin Meng’s words, Aunt Fang smiled reassuringly. “Lin Meng, don’t worry about it. If Xiao Qiu really didn’t want her there, she’d just send her away.”
More importantly, even if they wanted to stop An Yizhu, it would be impossible.
She had already disappeared in the blink of an eye.
The wound on her left abdomen didn’t seem to hinder her liveliness at all.
Even the doctors couldn’t explain it.
An Yizhu’s late differentiation and low-level pheromones were accompanied by many unusual clinical phenomena, requiring further research.
Aunt Fang added, “If Xiao Qiu has decided to take this girl with her, there must be a reason. Right?”
As she spoke, she held up An Yizhu’s eye-catching backpack—something Yu Guqiu had asked her to pack.
Lin Meng stayed silent, sulking.
While Lin Meng was sulking, An Yizhu had already made it to the rooftop.
The building was only nine stories tall.
Though the rooftop wasn’t particularly high, the chilly spring breeze was biting, especially when wearing only a hospital gown.
An Yizhu shivered, rubbing her arms as she scanned the rooftop. Soon, she spotted Yu Guqiu standing in the night, clad in a black trench coat.
One arm was crossed over her chest, while the other held a cigarette between her fingers. Smoke and her hair danced together in the wind.
Her silhouette looked lonely, as if she might dissipate into the night at any moment.
“Yu Guqiu.” An Yizhu called out as she walked toward her.
Yu Guqiu was in no mood to talk. Without turning around, she asked coldly, “What is it?”
Her tone was icy, devoid of any warmth, matching the cold corporate persona she was known for.
An Yizhu blinked.
Only now, with the contrast, did she realize how friendly Yu Guqiu had been whenever she spoke to her in the ward earlier.
Yu Guqiu exhaled a slow stream of smoke.
She had never been an easy person to approach.
If anyone hesitated to get closer, she wouldn’t be surprised.
An Yizhu was no exception.
After all, they had only known each other for two days.
But the next second, she heard An Yizhu’s hurried voice again: “They’re almost done packing downstairs! I came to call you back!”
Yu Guqiu turned her head.
An Yizhu was hiding behind a wall, peeking out with only her head visible. She continued shouting, “It’s too cold up here! Can we go back inside to talk?”
Yu Guqiu saw a shivering little rabbit hopping behind the wall, unable to withstand the cold.
There wasn’t a trace of composure in An Yizhu’s demeanor.
After a brief pause, Yu Guqiu let out a soft, helpless chuckle.
Apparently, for An Yizhu, Yu Guqiu’s frosty demeanor was nothing compared to the February chill.
Yu Guqiu stubbed out her cigarette and walked toward An Yizhu.
Unaware of the thoughts running through Yu Guqiu’s mind, An Yizhu happily turned to open the door back inside.
Yu Guqiu suddenly asked from behind her, “If life closes a door on you, what would you do?”
The moment the words left her mouth, Yu Guqiu wondered if the doctor’s diagnosis was wrong.
The doctor had said her pheromones no longer affected her life.
Yet just seeing An Yizhu had eased some of her frustration.
And now, she was even asking An Yizhu this question.
Weren’t these all signs that her pheromones were still influencing her?
Especially this question—it always had a standard answer: When life closes a door, it opens a window.
So, when faced with overwhelming difficulties, one must force themselves to find that window as a way out.
Why even bother asking?
While Yu Guqiu was lost in thought, An Yizhu was struggling with the door.
The wind on the rooftop was so strong that the pressure kept the door tightly shut. An Yizhu had to use all her strength to pry it open.
Once the door was open, the cold rooftop air rushed into the warm hallway.
An Yizhu held the door open and answered without missing a beat: “Then just force the door back open! Doors are meant to be opened and closed—that’s their whole purpose, isn’t it?”
Yu Guqiu stopped and stared at An Yizhu.
By now, An Yizhu was too cold to care why Yu Guqiu was looking at her like that. She pushed Yu Guqiu’s back, urging her inside. “Let’s go in first! It’s freezing out here!”
Coincidentally, Lin Meng and Aunt Fang had just stepped out to call the two patients back when they saw An Yizhu pushing Yu Guqiu inside.
Lin Meng frowned and muttered, “Can a mark really change someone this much? President Yu doesn’t even seem like herself anymore.”
Aunt Fang, however, smiled knowingly. With her life experience, she said, “It might not just be the mark. Sometimes, the connection between people is even more mysterious than pheromones.”
Lin Meng didn’t believe that. Both she and Aunt Fang were Betas—they could never truly understand the strange dynamics between Alphas and Omegas.
Yu Guqiu noticed the two of them and asked, “Is everything packed?”
“All done.” Aunt Fang nodded.
Yu Guqiu then asked, “Then why didn’t you give her her clothes?”
She was referring to An Yizhu, who was still rubbing her hands beside her.
Lin Meng couldn’t hold back her complaint. “She came back and immediately said she was going to find you! She didn’t even give us a chance to hand her the clothes!”
Aunt Fang chuckled beside her.
Though Lin Meng disliked An Yizhu, her complaint almost sounded like she was praising An Yizhu for her eagerness.
After hearing Lin Meng’s words, Yu Guqiu turned to An Yizhu, who was still shivering.
An Yizhu, however, just grinned and asked, “Huh? You bought me clothes?”
She had only just found out about it.
Aunt Fang laughed. “Xiao Qiu is very thoughtful. She couldn’t let you leave the hospital in a patient gown, and your old clothes definitely wouldn’t fit anymore.”
So Yu Guqiu had asked Lin Meng to buy a couple of outfits for An Yizhu in advance.
Aunt Fang also reminded An Yizhu, “Now that you and Xiao Qiu are bound together, you’re half her public image. You need to dress and behave appropriately.”
An Yizhu listened to the elder’s advice but wasn’t particularly interested in dwelling on it. She hurriedly wrapped up the conversation. “Got it! I’ll remember! Can I go change now so we can leave?”
Half an hour later, An Yizhu—now dressed in a tracksuit—happily boarded the car with her colorful backpack.
Lin Meng had deliberately bought her sportswear, thinking it was the simplest option and not bothering to put together a proper outfit.
Unexpectedly, An Yizhu’s long limbs suited the sportswear perfectly, making her look even more energetic.
Annoyed by An Yizhu’s irritatingly cheerful appearance, Lin Meng refused to look at her the entire time and got straight into the car.
Aunt Fang was the driver. Yu Guqiu and Lin Meng sat in the back, leaving An Yizhu to take the front passenger seat.
Hanging from the rearview mirror was a work badge with the name “Xie Fang” and the title “Senior Assistant at Yu Corporation.” Now An Yizhu knew Aunt Fang’s real name and position.
The car started smoothly and drove swiftly—truly befitting a senior assistant!
As they left the hospital, An Yizhu stared out the window at Jiangcheng’s bustling nightlife, which was just beginning.
She asked, “Where are we going now?”
No one answered.
Yu Guqiu was handling emails in the back.
Lin Meng still ignored her.
Aunt Fang wasn’t in the habit of talking while driving, but she made an exception at a red light. “After dropping Lin Meng off, we’ll take you and President Yu home.”
Lin Meng couldn’t resist asking, “President Yu, are you really taking her home? She’s a newly differentiated Alpha. Won’t it be dangerous for the two of you to be alone together?”
An Yizhu knew the novel’s setting—Yu Guqiu had three residences.
The first was the villa she had lived in since childhood, but she rarely returned after her mother passed away.
The second was her grandmother’s estate, where she occasionally stayed when visiting.
The third was the apartment she had bought herself—a spacious, modern flat decorated to her taste, her true home.
It seemed Yu Guqiu’s plan today was to take her home!
Yu Guqiu put down her phone and answered Lin Meng simply: “An Yizhu and I are bonded. The most dangerous thing has already happened.”
The more dissatisfied Lin Meng was with this answer, the more pleased An Yizhu was.
“During the follow-up, the doctor told me that Yu Guqiu and I need to spend more time together to stabilize our pheromones. Right now, Yu Guqiu can’t do without me.” An Yizhu declared, tilting her chin up with an expression of sheer smugness.
