- Chapter 25 - Changing Dorms
Hua You had originally thought she wouldn’t see Bian Chengyi again until that evening.
She was wrong.
By four or five in the afternoon on Sunday, Bian Chengyi’s mother was already dragging both girls to meet with Grade Director Lu to formally apply for a dorm reassignment.
When Director Lu first saw the WeChat message confirming they’d gotten married, his eyebrows almost fell off.
Within minutes, the news had spread through the entire senior year faculty office. It became the hot topic of the day. Though Director Lu had known the two girls had become close recently—especially with Hua You’s sudden skyrocket in grades—he hadn’t expected things to escalate to this level.
Most teachers agreed it was a strong match:
Hua You, now ranking first in the grade, and Bian Chengyi, always academically stable and top-tier.
Still, Lu had a two-hour sit-down with their homeroom teacher, Mr. Xu, earlier that morning—just to make sure he wasn’t dreaming.
Unlike the other teachers, who were mostly just here for the gossip, Mr. Xu looked distinctly not pleased.
“The thing is,” he said, “those two were at each other’s throats for most of the year. Then suddenly they’re eating together and walking to class side by side. I’m not worried about their grades—I’m worried about drama. What if they suddenly fall out again? It’ll throw off their whole rhythm.”
Director Lu raised a brow.
“Come on. One’s the ‘Class Rep Xishi,’ and the other’s the ‘Sleeping Beauty Demon Queen.’ With titles like that, how could they possibly fall out again?”
Mr. Xu gave a pained look.
“You didn’t see how badly Sleeping Beauty used to avoid Chengyi. She’d walk a whole lap around campus just to dodge her.”
Smoke rose lazily from the tea between them as Director Lu sipped, then chuckled.
“Xu, my friend—you just don’t get it. What do the kids call it nowadays? Ah, right—enemies-to-lovers. That’s what this is.”
Even so, Director Lu found the whole affair to be… suspiciously dramatic.
He sat behind his desk, staring at the three people seated across from him: Hua You, Bian Chengyi, and Bian’s very enthusiastic mother.
The “newlyweds” remained calm, composed.
The mother, however, looked like she’d just walked off a wedding banquet—cheeks glowing, eyes shining.
“Director Lu,” she beamed, “these two being in the same dorm will be so convenient. Could you please arrange a two-person room for them tonight?”
Lu waved a hand.
“That’s easy enough. But I do have a few questions first.”
He sat up straighter and looked Hua You dead in the eyes.
“Hua You, are you doing this willingly—?”
“I am I am I am!!” Hua You burst out with the energy of someone who definitely hadn’t been bribed or blackmailed. She even pulled two chocolates from her pocket. “Here, Director Lu! Lucky candy! From us!”
Director Lu took the candy and thought:
This girl better not be doing this just because she’s dazzled by Chengyi’s looks…
He turned to the girl he’d always respected and admired.
“And you, Chengyi…?”
Bian Chengyi smiled calmly.
“Don’t worry, Director. The proposal came from my family.”
Director Lu: Why do I feel like I’m being played… and thoroughly shown up?
Sensing his barely-contained crisis, Bian Chengyi kindly unwrapped one of the candies and placed it in front of him.
“Try this one, Director Lu. It’s very sweet.”
I’ll say, he thought. Your whole relationship is giving me a toothache.
“Alright then,” Lu finally relented. “Just sign the transfer paperwork, and I’ll stamp it.”
Once the form was signed and the stamp hit the page, Bian Chengyi’s mother went off to coordinate with the dorm manager, while the girls were sent back to pack up their things.
By 6 p.m., Hua You was back in her old dorm, suitcase in hand.
Her three roommates—who had rushed back early the moment they saw the news in the dorm group chat—were gathered around her like she was a celebrity. Even Pei Fei, the one who normally treated study time as sacred, was there.
They stared at the marriage certificate like it was a relic.
“Hua Hua, you’re a legend!” Lin Lingwan gave her a thumbs up.
“Smooth talking your way into a marriage license?! You and Class Rep Xishi—you’re my OTP come true!”
Hua You bonked her lightly on the head with a book.
“I told you! It’s just for tutoring convenience! We’re still just friends. Joke all you want in front of me, but don’t say this in front of her, got it?”
“Aww…” Pei Fei said with genuine disappointment.
“I thought you were really together. You’re both gorgeous, smart—what a perfect couple…”
“Okay, pause!” Hua You quickly pulled out the last of the lucky candy, trying to shove it into their mouths.
“I did say I liked her, but she said she doesn’t want to date. I even thought she liked someone else—and that I was just her excuse to dodge them…”
She frowned a little, brow creased in thought.
The strategy seemed to be working, sure—her “affection meter” with Bian Chengyi was rising fast—but the higher it got, the harder things became.
After all…
In the original novel, Bian Chengyi had loved Fang Jinyu.
Loved her so much it had turned into a slow, silent spiral of self-destruction.
How was she ever supposed to change that?
“Aw, don’t worry, Hua Hua.”
Lu Qianzi, catching on that Hua You was clearly referring to Fang Jinyu, leaned in to comfort her.
“Think about it—Class Rep hasn’t been seen hanging out with Fang Jinyu in forever. I really think they’re just normal friends. And anyway, Jinyu already has Fang Huai. You’re the one who’s Chengyi’s official wife!”
By the end, Lu Qianzi sounded so righteous, she could’ve been giving a courtroom declaration.
“They signed a marriage certificate! No way Class Rep doesn’t have some feelings for you!”
“Beautifully said.”
Hua You handed her another chocolate as a reward.
“But it’s fine. As long as she lives a good life after the college entrance exams… I’ll be okay with anything.”
Even if it means my mission progress isn’t high enough…
“You make it sound so tragic, Hua Hua.”
Lin Lingwan jumped in. “Like you’re gonna vanish into thin air after the exams or something.”
Hua You paused for a beat—then quickly smiled and tried to steer the conversation elsewhere.
“Anyway, I don’t ask for much. I just want her to get into the university she wants, be happy and healthy… that’s all.”
“Hua Hua, you really love like a saint,” the three of them said in unison.
And that made Hua You instantly regret ever admitting to them that she liked Bian Chengyi.
This is what I get. I can’t even clarify things anymore!
What was I even thinking when I said that… oh right—it was to explain why my attitude toward her changed…
After another round of chaotic teasing and giggling, the three girls helped Hua You pack up her things and haul them to the new dorm. Since they had more hands, her side moved faster. When they opened the door to the new two-person room, Bian Chengyi still hadn’t arrived yet.
Naturally, the girls did another full sweep—unpacking, folding, organizing. As a thank-you, Hua You promised to quietly tutor them during evening self-study tomorrow as a cram session before the midterms.
“This two-person dorm is amazing,” Lu Qianzi said, looking around in awe.
“It’s so spacious. Two separate beds, two separate desks—everything’s got a place. It just feels more focused.”
Lin Lingwan, on the other hand, had an entirely different focus.
“Wait, wait… you’re married, and you still have two separate beds? That doesn’t feel right!”
Hua You looked like a walking question mark.
She bonked Lin on the head with a workbook.
“How many times do I have to hit you to knock those weird ideas out of your head?! I told you—academics first! The marriage is just a formality, okay?! Clean out those questionable thoughts, please and thank you!”
“Come on, we’re all eighteen,” Pei Fei chimed in calmly.
“Totally normal.”
Even Pei Fei?
At this rate, Hua You’s face was so red she could’ve melted.
She stomped the floor.
“I’ll say this once more—Sister Bian and I are 100% pure. Completely, totally, utterly just friends!”
Though…
Okay.
Maybe there were a few exceptions:
Like the temporary marking thing.
And a few hugs.
And that one time she kissed her hand.
And maybe… holding hands now and then?
…
Alright.
Maybe not totally pure.
“Fine, fine,” Lin Lingwan laughed, pointing at her flushed cheeks.
“You two are just two model students on your way to Yeda. Got it.”
“But tell me this—” she added, grinning wickedly,
“Did she ever kiss you? Just the face. I’m not asking for much.”
“She did NOT!” Hua You cried, chasing her with a pillow.
“I don’t believe you!” Lin dashed around the room. “Unless you say ‘Bian Chengyi has never kissed Hua You’ ten times, I’m just going to assume it happened!”
“She hasn’t she hasn’t she hasn’t— Bian Chengyi has never kissed Hua You!”
Pillow in hand, Hua You ran after her, shouting,
“Lin Lingwan! I swear, if I don’t clobber you today, I’ll change my last name!”
“She’s never kissed me, okay?! Think about it—someone that refined, that gentle, that reserved—how could she possibly kiss me? It’s not even in character!”
Just as Hua You finally managed to grab Lin Lingwan—pillow raised and ready to deliver some much-needed justice—the sound of a key turning at the dorm door made everyone freeze.
Not just Hua You.
All four girls went completely still.
The door creaked open slowly.
Standing in the doorway, suitcase in hand, was Bian Chengyi.
Her hair was swept into a high ponytail, a few soft strands trailing behind. She wore a crisp white shirt, the cuffs rolled up and pinned with a golden clip. Her expression was calm as always, her gaze sweeping across the room.
With a slight nod, she greeted the three roommates.
“Good evening. You must be here helping Hua You move in. Thank you for your trouble.”
Then she smiled—soft, subtle—and turned to look directly at Hua You.
“As for you, Hua You…”
“I’ll overlook your attempted assault—this time.”
She gave the pillow in Hua You’s raised hand a pointed glance.
“Just remember to put that pillow down. Holding it like that is tiring and…”
“…makes you look very guilty.”
