Her Eyes Say She Likes You - Chapter 7
Chapter 7: Superpower and an Accelerating Heartbeat
After that dinner that was “like a poem,” Wei Jia felt like her entire being was soaking in a jar of honey.
She spent two days grinning foolishly while hugging the shirt-jacket Dong Yan had worn. In the end, she couldn’t bring herself to wash it, carefully hanging it in the most conspicuous spot in her closet—as if the lingering scent of Dong Yan’s gentle presence was her freshest source of inspiration.
The creative meeting for the new serialization went exceptionally smoothly. Dong Yan was responsible for consistently delivering high-quality artwork, and Wei Jia’s marketing plan was both imaginative and precisely effective. The frequency of their online communication grew higher, gradually extending from work into their personal lives.
[Wei Jia]: Teacher! Today’s sky tastes like Matcha Mille Crêpe! (Attached image of clouds outside the window)
[Eyes]: Mmm, like the raw chocolate you brought last time.
[Wei Jia]: !!! Teacher, you remember! (Happy rolling.gif)
[Wei Jia]: Teacher, what time do you usually sleep? Staying up late isn’t good for your skin! (Worried-mother.jpg)
[Eyes]: Around midnight. You too, don’t always stay up with Fu Zhi.
[Wei Jia]: She’s asking for trouble! I won’t join her! I’m obedient! (Good-girl.jpg)
Wei Jia held her phone, feeling that every calm response from Dong Yan was like a small pebble, stirring up ripples of happiness in her heart.
But this screen-separated interaction gradually ceased to satisfy her.
She wanted to be closer. She wanted to instantly see the other person’s expression when the teacher handed her a revised draft; she wanted to have a legitimate reason to offer an umbrella on a rainy day; she wanted to naturally knock on the door and ask, “Want to share a coffee?” when she smelled the aroma.
Once this thought arose, it grew wildly like a vine.
So, on a perfectly ordinary Tuesday afternoon, Dong Yan’s doorbell rang.
She thought it was a delivery person. Opening the door, she saw Wei Jia standing outside. Her grey-pink short hair seemed more neatly trimmed than the last time they met, and her face held a smile mixed with excitement and nervousness. At her feet were two massive suitcases.
“Teacher! Good afternoon!” Wei Jia’s voice was full of energy.
Dong Yan looked at her and her luggage, somewhat taken aback: “You are…?”
Wei Jia grinned, revealing her two pointed canines, and gestured to the always-empty door next door:
“Report, Teacher! I used a little ‘superpower’!” Her tone was light and slightly proud. “Starting today, we’re neighbors! Please take care of me!”
Dong Yan was completely stunned.
She looked at Wei Jia’s shockingly bright eyes, then at the two suitcases clearly holding all her belongings, and finally, her gaze fell upon the open door of the previously empty neighbor’s apartment.
Her heart, without warning, felt like it had been violently struck by something, and it began to beat uncontrollably fast.
Thump, thump.
The sound was so loud she wondered if Wei Jia could hear it.
She opened her mouth, wanting to say something, such as “How did you find an apartment so quickly?” or “Won’t moving be too much trouble?” But in the end, looking at Wei Jia’s expression—which was like a puppy anticipating praise, saying, “Praise my cleverness”—all words choked in her throat.
Finally, she simply stepped slightly aside, yielding space in the doorway, and said softly:
“…Would you like to come in for a glass of water?”
Wei Jia’s eyes instantly curved into crescents.
“Yes!”
She responded loudly, dragging her suitcases, happily and officially stepping into a world closer to Dong Yan, like a large dog that had finally found its home.
