Her Little Mute Omega [Rebirth] - Chapter 13
Lu Chan held the book in one hand, her other hand braced against the bookshelf, effectively trapping the petite figure of Mu Jin in her arms.
Leaning down, Lu Chan whispered close to Mu Jin’s delicate earlobe, her voice low and husky, “Xiao Jin, do you want this book?”
Mu Jin immediately felt a warm breath against her ear, the heat searing her skin.
Though Lu Chan hadn’t released her Alpha pheromones, Mu Jin’s senses were overwhelmed by the intense scent of lime, leaving her mind blank.
Mu Jin’s heart raced uncontrollably, her delicate, adorable face flushing crimson. She could only nod instinctively.
Seeing her dazed and adorable state, Lu Chan felt an overwhelming urge to pinch Mu Jin’s pale cheek.
Her fingers hovered in the air for a moment before finally settling on the bookshelf near Mu Jin’s chest.
“This is a book about human genetics. Do you enjoy reading about such topics, Xiao Jin?” Lu Chan asked, her sharp, cold eyes narrowing slightly.
Mu Jin nodded unconsciously, her face still flushed.
She took a deep, surreptitious breath to calm her racing heart, then looked up at Lu Chan and pointed toward the reading area.
Lu Chan’s gaze was immediately drawn to Mu Jin’s luminous eyes, which sparkled like starlight under the lamplight, captivating her attention.
Their eyes met, and Mu Jin’s heart began to race with nervous excitement. She couldn’t help but look away, lowering her head as the warmth in her cheeks intensified.
Lu Chan’s lips curved into a faint smile as she turned and walked toward an empty seat.
Feeling the pressure around her dissipate, Mu Jin finally looked up, immediately noticing the curious and envious glances directed her way.
She chuckled softly, her heart fluttering with joy as she followed Lu Chan.
Once seated, Mu Jin remembered the question she wanted to ask. She typed eagerly, “Sister Chan, what brings you here?”
She deliberately lowered the device’s volume to ensure she wouldn’t disturb the other readers.
“I just finished a project at work and thought I’d come read for a bit,” Lu Chan replied calmly, reciting the explanation she had prepared.
“What a coincidence! I came here to read too,” Mu Jin said, her lips curving into a radiant smile.
Lu Chan nodded, her expression remaining cool.
In truth, Lu Chan had been watching Mu Jin’s every move since she entered the library—from browsing the shelves to selecting her books.
When Mu Jin finally noticed her, Lu Chan had been poised to look up as if their meeting were accidental.
She had imagined her little wife would rush over, greet her cheerfully, and invite her to read together.
To her surprise, Mu Jin had hidden himself.
Lu Chan felt a flicker of annoyance. This wasn’t how she had imagined things would go.
She cornered him between the bookshelves, intending it as a mild punishment.
“Why do you like reading these kinds of books?” Lu Chan asked. “For most people, they’re quite dry and obscure.”
To soften her tone, she added an explanation, but it had little effect.
Mu Jin immediately felt the pressure of being questioned. He pursed his lips, carefully considering his words before typing, “I want to become a genetic researcher and develop a drug that promotes differentiation. That way, others like me who can’t differentiate can live normal lives.”
Lu Chan’s heart stirred at his words.
This was the first time she had heard Mu Jin’s deepest thoughts, so earnest and so carefully considered.
Though Mu Jin would eventually differentiate into an S-Class Omega, during the three years he remained undifferentiated, he had endured countless taunts and strange looks.
He had even been treated as an inferior being incapable of differentiation.
Most people would have crumbled under such pressure.
But Mu Jin hadn’t succumbed to despair. Instead, he lived with even greater optimism and determination.
Her young wife was even stronger and braver than she had imagined.
“Both the capital and this region have top-tier genetic research schools, but they generally only admit outstanding Alphas and exceptional married Omegas. With your qualifications, it would be very difficult to get accepted,” Lu Chan said matter-of-factly.
As soon as the words left her mouth, she saw a flicker of disappointment in Mu Jin’s eyes and immediately regretted her bluntness.
“I know the requirements are high, but I want to try. Maybe a miracle will happen,” Mu Jin said, her lips curving into a determined smile. She flipped open the book’s table of contents, pointed to a name, and added, “I hope one day I can be like her, dedicating my entire being to the study of human genetics.”
Lu Chan glanced at the name, her eyes flashing with recognition. “Yu Ning? Is she your idol?”
Mu Jin nodded enthusiastically, her face lighting up with joy. “I hope I can meet her someday. If I could get her autograph, that would be even better!”
Seeing the longing in Mu Jin’s eyes, Lu Chan felt a pang of jealousy. Suppressing the sourness in her heart, she said, “Qingqing’s birthday is next month. If you want to go, I’ll take you.”
“Sister Chan, you know her?” Mu Jin’s eyes widened in surprise, her face brimming with delight.
Lu Chan still felt a pang of jealousy, her expression turning cold. “Qingqing and I have been friends for years. They invited me to their wedding two years ago. Qingqing played a significant role in helping her get into this top research institute.”
Though Lu Chan didn’t intend to disparage her, the subtle anger in her voice made it easy to assume she was biased against this person.
“I believe she has the talent,” Mu Jin quickly defended her idol, “but because she’s an Omega, the standards are even stricter, so…” She trailed off, unable to finish the sentence.
Seeing Mu Jin’s cautious and distressed expression, Lu Chan’s heart softened. She continued, “She is indeed exceptionally talented. Otherwise, my friend wouldn’t have married her. You’ll definitely become someone as remarkable as her someday. Perhaps you’ll even surpass her.”
Hearing Lu Chan’s encouraging words, Mu Jin’s eyes lit up, and she couldn’t help but smile. “If I could achieve even half of what she has, I’d be content,” she said modestly. “Sister Chan, did you know? She wrote this book! Many of her perspectives on Omegas are so novel and insightful. Every time she publishes a book or an article, I read it carefully, multiple times…”
Lu Chan listened quietly, occasionally offering a few words of agreement.
But she wasn’t just making polite noises. Based on Mu Jin’s words, she would ask insightful questions or share her own perspectives.
Mu Jin grew increasingly animated, her cheeks flushed with excitement. As she finished, she glanced cautiously at Lu Chan. “Sister Chan, am I talking too much?”
“No, please continue. I’m listening,” Lu Chan replied, her usually indifferent expression now remarkably earnest.
Mu Jin felt a surge of being truly cared for. She smiled and resumed talking.
Among her classmates, most chose more popular majors that promised easier paths to fame.
Many couldn’t understand her decision to study genetics, some even mocking her for it.
Until now, Lu Chan was the only person who had ever listened intently to her endless chatter and genuinely understood what she was saying.
Mu Jin’s heart swelled with gratitude and the joy of being understood.
Everyone in their field knew that genetic research was incredibly challenging, often leading to a lifetime of obscurity, far from the spotlight.
Even her idol’s relative fame stemmed from marrying the eldest daughter of a wealthy Alpha family, which meant she frequently appeared in entertainment gossip columns.
Despite this, Mu Jin still dreamed of becoming a genetic researcher.
