Her Little Mute Omega [Rebirth] - Chapter 19
Mu Jin’s dream was to become a genetic researcher, helping those who couldn’t differentiate.
Her previous marriage had already shattered that dream. Given a second chance, Lu Chan was determined not to repeat the same mistake.
Like Qi Bujiao, who constantly complained about not receiving enough attention from her wife but never interfered with her work.
Omegas were naturally delicate and easily influenced by Alpha pheromones. Most Alphas believed Omegas should stay home and fulfill their duty of bearing children.
The wealthier the family, the stronger their protective and controlling instincts toward Omegas became.
They might allow Omegas to go out, but they would never permit them to work.
This was especially evident in these elite families.
The Qi Family was the sole exception.
As the eldest daughter, Qi Bujiao spent her days indulging in leisure, having never cared for academics since her student days. The family business had fallen to her younger sister, an A-Class Omega.
“Lu Chan, you’re twenty-nine already! Why aren’t you married yet? No one caught your eye? What’s your type? Want me to set you up?” Qi Bujiao, having finished venting, flashed her radiant smile and resumed her usual gossip about Lu Chan’s love life. “You’re an S-Class Alpha! You should have Omegas throwing themselves at you! Why don’t you like any of them?”
Lu Chan swirled the wine in her glass, lowered her gaze, and took a sip. “Do you think the Lu Family would allow me to marry just any Omega?”
Qi Bujiao fell silent, a sympathetic expression crossing her face as she refilled Lu Chan’s glass. “With your status and capabilities, I doubt anyone but Duan Family’s spoiled princess could be considered your equal.”
Lu Chan’s brow furrowed, a flicker of annoyance crossing her features. “The Old Master has that in mind.”
“And you?” Qi Bujiao asked curiously, then paused, adopting the tone of someone who’d been through it all. “She may be a bit temperamental, but she’s an S-Class Omega and the Duan Family’s darling. A little attitude is to be expected.”
Lu Chan remained silent, draining her glass in one gulp.
She would never marry the Duan Family’s Omega.
Soon, Mu Jin would differentiate, and Mu Jin was the only one she wanted to mark.
“Your birthday’s next month. Will your wife be back?” Lu Chan asked, setting down her glass.
Hearing the question, Qi Bujiao sighed, her expression turning wistful. “I asked her, but she didn’t give me a straight answer. I have no idea if she’ll be here.”
After a moment, she suddenly grew wary, her gaze sharpening as she stared at Lu Chan. “Why are you suddenly so interested in my wife?”
Lu Chan shot her a cold glance and took a sip of wine. “My mother’s goddaughter idolizes your wife and asked me to get her autograph.”
“When did Auntie get a goddaughter?” Qi Bujiao asked excitedly, firing off three questions in rapid succession, her eyes sparkling with gossip. “Alpha or Omega? Married?”
“Undifferentiated,” Lu Chan replied tersely, her eyes flickering as a faint smile played on her lips. “But soon.”
Qi Bujiao missed the last part, grinning broadly. “Leave it to me! Once my wife and I have finalized the details, I’ll let you know. We’ll invite your goddaughter too.”
Hearing the words “goddaughter,” Lu Chan frowned in displeasure. “Her name is Mu Jin.”
“Alright, we’ll invite Mu Jin,” Qi Bujiao readily corrected herself.
After another sip of wine, Qi Bujiao seemed to suddenly realize something. She raised an eyebrow and exclaimed in surprise, “This is the first time I’ve ever seen you care so much about someone! You’re actually getting an autograph for them yourself? Tsk, tsk, tsk, Lu Chan, spill the beans! What’s going on? Do you have a thing for her? You’re twenty-nine already—you can’t go after minors!”
Most people differentiate at eighteen, so Qi Bujiao subconsciously equated being undifferentiated with being a minor.
“She’s already twenty-one, a university graduate, and preparing for postgraduate exams,” Lu Chan said, glancing sideways before lowering her head to sip her wine, her porcelain-white cheeks flushing slightly pink.
“Twenty-one and still undifferentiated?” Qi Bujiao frowned thoughtfully, showing no surprise. “My wife mentioned that a tiny fraction of people, for various reasons, never differentiate even at the proper age. Some differentiate after treatment, while others remain undifferentiated for life. What’s Mu Jin’s reason?”
“I don’t know,” Lu Chan replied, her gaze lowered.
In her previous life, she had met Mu Jin only after Mu Jin had differentiated, and she had decided to marry her after just one meeting.
At the time, her grandfather had been pressuring her relentlessly to marry an S-Class Omega from the Duan Family.
Refusing to become a pawn in a business alliance, and with her mother actively pushing for the marriage, she had chosen Mu Jin after weighing her options.
As it turned out, she hadn’t made the wrong choice.
Her only mistake had been failing to protect her little wife.
This time, she would never let anyone harm Mu Jin.
Not even those from the Lu Family.
“Lu Chan, you can invite Mu Jin to my birthday party now. My wife will definitely come,” Qi Bujiao suddenly exclaimed, his eyes lighting up as he met Lu Chan’s gaze. He explained with a grin, “My wife researches genetics and is particularly interested in rare cases like Mu Jin’s. If she knows Mu Jin will be there, she’ll definitely come too.”
“She can’t extract Mu Jin’s pheromones,” Lu Chan warned in a low, icy tone.
Pheromones contain differentiated genetic information, and extracting them can harm the body.
Government regulations strictly prohibit any entity or individual from forcibly extracting another person’s pheromones.
Researchers typically obtain data from voluntary donors or deceased individuals.
However, some unscrupulous individuals resort to cruel methods to extract pheromones, selling them to illegal research labs to develop counterfeit high-level pheromones.
Wealthy and influential low-level individuals then purchase these counterfeits to impersonate high-level differentiated individuals.
In this gray market, where there are buyers, there will always be those who profit from selling pheromones.
Qi Bujiao waved his hands frantically, explaining with pride, “My wife is a legitimate researcher with professional credentials. She would never do anything unethical like that.”
“Hmm,” Lu Chan replied, her expression softening as her slender fingers toyed with the delicate wine glass. “When the time comes, send someone to pick up Mu Jin, using your wife’s name.”
Qi Bujiao froze for a moment, then reacted with wide-eyed disbelief. “Old Master Lu is really overstepping! Mu Jin is practically half your mother’s daughter—rounding up, she’s family! And he still won’t let you two interact?”
“How could he ever allow the Lu Family’s bloodline and status to be tainted?” Lu Chan scoffed, her grip tightening until the glass shattered in her hand.
The shards clattered onto the table, their transparent edges reflecting her icy gaze.
Qi Bujiao shuddered, grimacing. “Tone down your Alpha pheromones.”
Lu Chan pressed her lips together, suppressing her aura as she stood. “Lend me your car. I’ll return it in an hour.”
The two drinks she’d had were nothing for an Alpha; she wouldn’t be driving under the influence.
Qi Bujiao immediately tossed her car keys from her bag, teasing with a smile, “Hiding from Old Master Lu again?”
From childhood, Lu Chan had always been surrounded by bodyguards. Even after her secondary gender presentation as an Alpha, covert protection remained.
Later, she realized this so-called protection was actually a form of surveillance.
Lu Chan shot her a look, grabbed the keys, and strode out.
Qi Bujiao abruptly stood and chased after her, wanting to ask where she was going.
But Lu Chan had already vanished.
