Her Little Mute Omega [Rebirth] - Chapter 27
Lu Chan drove, her eyes fixed on the road ahead.
In the rearview mirror, a curious face occasionally flashed into view, those eyes so similar to her own sparkling with mischievous amusement.
Lu Chan shot her a cold glare and stopped at a red light, her slender fingers tapping against the steering wheel.
Ye Xian stood up and leaned over the back of the driver’s seat, her face close to Lu Chan’s, grinning with gossip. “Chanchan, I can smell your scent on Xiao Jin. I never imagined you’d actually mark her. Where’s your suppressant?”
“What are you trying to say?” Lu Chan snapped, turning her head, her eyes sharpening.
Normally, Ye Xian would have known better than to push Lu Chan’s buttons and would have shut up. But this was different. She could clearly sense that Lu Chan was putting on a show of bravado to hide her true feelings.
A woman who loathed Omegas so fiercely had actually gone out of her way to mark one? This was completely out of character for Lu Chan.
“Chanchan, do you even realize what marking an Omega means?” Ye Xian drawled deliberately, her eyes brimming with knowing. “Even if it’s just a temporary mark, if word gets out, it’ll still damage the Omega’s reputation.”
“I’ll handle it myself. No need for your reminders,” Lu Chan replied coldly, a faint blush coloring the tips of her ears beneath her dark hair.
She cracked the car window open slightly, letting the cool breeze dissipate the heat rising within her.
She admired her mother’s intelligence, but such sharp wit could also be unsettling.
Ye Xian chuckled, settling back gracefully and dropping the subject.
Pushing further would only provoke Lu Chan’s embarrassment and anger.
She had always thought Lu Chan was heartless, cold as a machine.
Her unchanging expression, perpetually frozen in an intimidating indifference, seemed to suggest that no one could ever truly capture her attention.
Countless Omegas had eagerly sought to invite Lu Chan to dinner, only to be ruthlessly rejected.
Yet this aloof, unattainable flower had been frequently visiting Mu Jin lately, her concern far exceeding the boundaries of ordinary friendship.
Ye Xian had initially assumed this was because Mu Jin hadn’t yet presented as an Omega, and thus wouldn’t deliberately release pheromones to entice Alphas, making their interactions more comfortable.
Now that Mu Jin had presented as an Omega—though her classification remained uncertain—Lu Chan’s concern persisted unchanged, showing no sign of aversion.
In her memory, Lu Chan would always frown in annoyance whenever the topic of Omegas came up, refusing to discuss them further.
Over the years, she had never dated an Omega, let alone been involved in any scandalous rumors.
For an Alpha, this was highly unusual behavior.
She had once tried to persuade Lu Chan to seek therapy, only to be met with an icy glare.
“Chanchan, you’ve finally grown up! Your mother no longer needs to worry about you dying alone,” Ye Xian said dramatically, wiping away nonexistent tears from the corner of her eye, her tone half sentimental, half teasing.
Lu Chan shot her a sideways glance, started the car, and ignored the fervent gaze.
She had no intention of explaining to anyone why she had marked Mu Jin, not even to her own mother.
“Chanchan, you abandoned the Duan Family’s Omega today to mark another one. If the Old Master finds out, he’ll throw a fit,” Ye Xian said, leaning back comfortably with a cold smirk.
With that expression, her features bore an uncanny resemblance to Lu Chan’s.
“I’ll handle it myself,” Lu Chan replied coldly, her composure unwavering.
Now that Mu Jin had fully differentiated into an Omega, the Old Master had no reason to keep them apart.
Back at the villa, Lu Chan had barely parked when the butler rushed over, his expression tense.
“Miss Chan, the Chairman has been waiting for you inside for some time now,” the butler said carefully, holding an umbrella over her. His eyes held a hint of worry.
“I know,” Lu Chan nodded.
She glanced inside, noticing the villa’s servants standing rigidly by the door.
“Chanchan, your mother won’t come in. I don’t want to bring bad luck,” Ye Xian said from the car, stretching and yawning. She closed her eyes, feigning sleep.
Lu Chan didn’t reply. She got out of the car and entered the villa.
Everyone knew her mother disliked the Old Master. The villa staff wisely avoided mentioning either of them in front of the other.
Though they lived under the same roof, they rarely saw each other more than a handful of times a year.
Lu Chan had no interest in their feud, nor any desire to uncover its rights and wrongs.
To her, both her mother and grandfather were merely titles, devoid of any special meaning.
As Lu Chan entered, Lu Wensheng struck the floor sharply with his cane, the dull thud echoing through the room.
The servants all lowered their heads in unison, standing nervously and fearfully.
Lu Chan’s expression remained unchanged as she spoke coldly, “Grandfather, what do you want?”
“I told you to come home early, so why are you only arriving now? The Duan Family Omega has already left. She came dressed so beautifully, and you left halfway through. If word gets out, how will I ever face Chairman Duan again?” Lu Wensheng roared, his cane pounding the floor relentlessly as if trying to shatter it.
“I entertained her for the two hours you requested, Grandfather. Since you invited her, shouldn’t you see her off? Isn’t that perfectly reasonable?” Lu Chan replied calmly, completely unfazed.
The older the Old Master grew, the more impatient he became, losing the composure he had in his youth.
Even a minor act of defiance from her brought him storming in to “demand answers.”
Anyone else would have cowered before his authority.
But she was the one he had personally trained, and she wouldn’t be easily intimidated.
“Lu Chan, I’m doing this for your own good! Are you trying to anger me to death?” Lu Wensheng coughed heavily, his aged face a mix of anger and helplessness. “I’ve been thinking of you wholeheartedly, and this is how you repay me? If I’d known, I wouldn’t have humiliated myself by begging others!”
As he spoke, Lu Wensheng clutched his chest, his voice thick with bitterness.
A servant immediately rushed to his side to assist him.
Lu Chan watched coldly, offering neither rebuttal nor comfort.
Even after her marriage, such scenes played out periodically. She had long grown immune, but the Old Master never tired of performing.
“Lu Chan, go apologize to Miss Duan. I’ve already chosen a gift for you, so no one can say the Lu Family lacks proper etiquette,” Lu Wensheng sighed, his tone earnest.
As soon as he finished speaking, a servant behind him presented the gift.
Lu Chan glanced at it and signaled the Butler to accept it.
“That’s better. Now you’re being a good granddaughter,” Lu Wensheng smiled in satisfaction, leaving with the servants attending to him.
As he passed Lu Chan’s car, he snorted coldly and struck the ground sharply with his cane.
Ye Xian, uninterested in the drama, waited for the Old Master’s figure to disappear before stepping out of the car.
“Mother, take this gift to the Duan Family,” Lu Chan said in a low voice, her tone tinged with impatience.
Although she had no intention of marrying Duan Miaohan, she felt obligated to maintain appearances due to the long-standing friendship between their families.
“Chanchan, you should at least check what the gift is before sending it,” Ye Xian said with a smile, taking the package from the butler and opening it. “We wouldn’t want any misunderstandings.”
When she saw it was a custom-made necklace, she curled her lip, held it up, and shook it mockingly. “The Old Master is quite generous, willing to spend so much.”
Lu Chan’s eyes darkened. She instructed the butler, “Put this gift away and send over some high-quality tea instead.”
“Yes, Miss Chan,” the butler replied with a solemn nod.
Ye Xian set the necklace down, her eyes gleaming with amusement. “Do you want me to deliver it personally?”
“Mm-hmm,” Lu Chan replied coolly, turning to walk upstairs.
“You’re so ungrateful,” Ye Xian pouted, though her eyes continued to sparkle with laughter. “You should at least be nicer when asking your mother for favors.”
In this contest of wills between her and the Old Master, she was confident she would emerge victorious.
Lu Chan returned to her room and changed her phone wallpaper back to a photo of Mu Jin as a child.
She stared at it for a moment, a hint of tenderness flickering in her eyes.
After a moment of contemplation, Lu Chan tapped her fingers and typed rapidly, “Xiao Jin, I’ll send over a voice-activated electronic device tomorrow.”
She wanted to apologize for the car accident, but her words came out cold and rigid, just like when she made business decisions—authoritative and uncompromising.
When her phone lit up, Mu Jin hastily wiped away her tears.
After reading the message, she couldn’t help but smile. She typed back, “Okay, thank you, Sister Chan.”
“You’re welcome,” Lu Chan replied instantly, her gaze fixed on the screen as she sank into thought.
After pondering for a while, she couldn’t think of a follow-up topic and frowned at the chat history.
“Sister Chan, I want to get my differentiation level tested. Which hospital is best?” Mu Jin typed carefully and nervously pressed send, anxiously awaiting a reply.
“First Hospital is the best. My cousin works there,” Lu Chan responded quickly.
After differentiation, individuals must visit designated hospitals for level testing. Only with the hospital-issued certificate can they apply for a new identity card at the public security bureau.
While many local hospitals offer testing, First Hospital is the most authoritative, with a flawless record of accurate assessments.
“Thank you, Sister Chan!” Mu Jin hugged her phone and beamed, her spirits lifting instantly.
Lu Chan stared at the chat history for a moment before ending the conversation.
She typed “Good night” and exited the page, then dialed a number.
After a brief wait, the call connected, and a languid female voice answered, “Sis, what made you call me?”
“Xiangxing, a friend of mine just differentiated. I want you to personally conduct her test tomorrow,” Lu Chan said, her voice cool and detached.
Even ordinary words carried an air of command when spoken by her.
Ye Xiangxing, long accustomed to this, smirked playfully. “Sis, who exactly is this person who warrants the personal attention of the Deputy Chief Physician?” she asked, her tone intrigued.
“My friend,” Lu Chan repeated flatly.
“Tsk, I don’t believe it. Sis, spill the beans—is there something going on? Could this be my future sister-in-law?” Ye Xiangxing pressed excitedly, her voice brimming with certainty.
“Stop asking so many questions. Just prepare for tomorrow,” Lu Chan warned coldly, her forceful tone betraying a hint of defensiveness.
As soon as she finished speaking, Ye Xiangxing burst into laughter, as if she already knew the truth.
“Understood! I’ll be there personally tomorrow. I wouldn’t miss such a spectacular scene for the world,” Ye Xiangxing replied, her eyes gleaming with anticipation.
She twirled a pen in her hand, a knowing smile playing on her lips.
Lu Chan frowned and hung up.
I’ve been so careful, she thought. How can everyone guess?
