Her Little Mute Omega [Rebirth] - Chapter 37
The line for compatibility testing at the hospital was even longer than the one for differentiation checks.
Within the queue, one could observe individuals with a wide range of pheromones.
Most people seeking compatibility tests were those considering further relationships, while a smaller portion consisted of couples already in love.
The government promoted free love, allowing individuals with matching or differing pheromones to form relationships, provided their compatibility exceeded fifty percent.
However, societal norms still favored Alpha-Omega pairings and Beta-Beta pairings.
Even when love transcended pheromone hierarchies, such relationships rarely received public approval. Instead, they were often viewed as eccentric and faced ridicule and disdain.
Lu Chan glanced at the long line, recalling the events of the previous day, and softly asked, “Xiao Jin, would you like some water?”
“No, thank you…” Mu Jin immediately shook her head, reaching out to take Lu Chan’s arm. With a slight blush, she lowered her head. “Let’s just wait here.”
As long as she could be with this person, even waiting felt like happiness.
“Alright,” Lu Chan nodded, her gaze fixed on the people ahead.
The technology for compatibility testing was now highly advanced, providing results on the spot.
Despite the long line, the process moved relatively quickly.
A male Alpha and a female Omega emerged from the testing room, parting ways like strangers.
Lu Chan’s eyes narrowed slightly.
She remembered how intimately the pair had stood together just moments ago, like a couple deeply in love.
But because their pheromones were incompatible, they now acted like strangers, as if their earlier intimacy had been nothing but an illusion.
Mu Jin also witnessed the scene, her round eyes filled with surprise and confusion.
She pursed her lips, then looked up at Lu Chan’s refined profile and asked softly, “Sister Chan, if our compatibility is low, would you hate me?”
Compatibility issues had led to countless tragic love stories.
The government encouraged people to prioritize pheromone compatibility in relationships, but love couldn’t be controlled.
Some couples only discovered their incompatibility after falling in love, forcing them to endure painful breakups.
Even if they stayed together, they couldn’t escape the agony of mating with incompatible pheromones.
“Don’t overthink it,” Lu Chan said firmly, reassuring her. “We’re definitely compatible.”
At these words, a flicker of sadness crossed Mu Jin’s eyes, and she gently released Lu Chan’s arm.
If they weren’t compatible, their fate would likely mirror that of the couple they had just seen.
Though she knew this was the norm in their society, she couldn’t help feeling a pang of sorrow.
If only love could exist without the influence of pheromones.
Noticing Mu Jin’s movement, Lu Chan paused, quickly reviewing what she had just said.
After careful consideration, she found no fault in her words.
Just as she was about to speak, a commotion erupted behind them.
Two female Betas, each clutching the arm of another female Beta, were locked in a heated argument, their voices echoing through the entire corridor.
“Xiao Ya and I are a match made in heaven! You’re not worthy of her!” the woman on the left declared, her face flushed crimson.
“You? You’d be lucky if your compatibility with Xiao Ya even reached fifty percent,” the woman on the right scoffed, her face twisted with disdain.
The woman caught in the middle glanced nervously between the two, gently squeezing the hand of the woman on her left.
Hearing the commotion, Mu Jin turned her head and met the gaze of the woman on the right.
A flash of admiration flickered in the woman’s eyes. She immediately released the arm of the Beta in the middle and strode toward Mu Jin, flicking a strand of hair as she approached. “Miss Mu, you’re breathtakingly beautiful. I’d love to test our compatibility together.”
“Delusional,” Lu Chan snapped, immediately stepping in front of Mu Jin to shield her. Her icy glare pinned the woman in place. “You’re merely A-Class. You’re not worthy.”
“We haven’t even tested our compatibility yet. How can you know if we’re a match?” The woman smiled confidently, showing no signs of backing down.
Mu Jin shook her head repeatedly, refusing.
Some open-minded people might test compatibility on their first meeting, but she genuinely disliked such frivolous and calculating individuals.
If the compatibility test failed, these types would turn on you instantly, without the slightest hesitation.
They were thoroughgoing egoists, driven solely by pheromones, completely abandoning the emotional connections that define human relationships.
“Don’t be so quick to reject me,” the woman persisted, her smile radiating unwavering confidence. “We might actually be a perfect match.”
“Are you still going to test with Xiao Ya?” The woman who had been arguing with her stormed over, demanding an answer.
“Of course I’ll test with her! I’m coming, I’m coming. Why wouldn’t I?” The woman replied with a dismissive air, her expression still tinged with contempt.
“If you’re going to test with Xiao Jin, why are you hitting on other people?”
“Just because I’m testing with her doesn’t mean I can’t talk to anyone else,” the woman retorted dismissively.
The questioner grew even angrier.
“This is a hospital,” Xiao Ya said softly, pulling on the angry woman’s arm to calm her down. “Please don’t argue here. Everyone’s watching us.”
“Fine, I won’t say another word,” the angry woman said, instantly calming down despite the lingering fury on her face. She managed to restrain her emotions.
Xiao Ya smiled softly, her expression brightening with genuine happiness.
“How utterly provincial,” the woman sneered, her gaze fixed on Mu Jin. “Miss Mu, are you absolutely sure you won’t reconsider?”
“Are you blind? Can’t you see they’re a couple?” the other woman couldn’t help but retort. “She’s already rejected you clearly. How can you still have the nerve to ask?”
“What’s it to you?” the woman snapped, her voice rising sharply.
Seeing the two were about to quarrel again, Xiao Ya hurriedly tugged at the woman’s sleeve, shaking her head imploringly.
“It’s only because you’re so kind that she keeps bullying you,” the woman said, her eyes reddening with a mix of heartache and resentment. “If she were your match, your future would be…”
Xiao Ya lowered her head, offering no reply.
Watching this scene, Mu Jin felt a silent wave of sorrow wash over her.
She could see that Xiao Ya was in love with the woman who so fiercely protected her.
But if their pheromones weren’t compatible, their connection would remain unfulfilled, a bond destined to be broken.
A pang of sympathy struck Mu Jin’s heart. She glanced up at Lu Chan.
Just as Lu Chan lowered her head, their eyes met.
Mu Jin instinctively arched her brows and eyes, offering a gentle smile.
Lu Chan’s heart fluttered, sensing a hidden emotion.
Yet she couldn’t decipher the fleeting emotion that had flashed through Mu Jin’s clear eyes.
After waiting for half an hour, it was finally their turn.
Lu Chan entered the room first.
Mu Jin glanced back and met Xiao Ya’s gaze.
They exchanged faint smiles, as if encouraging each other.
As Mu Jin stepped into the room, she froze momentarily upon seeing a familiar figure. A soft laugh escaped her lips as she typed, “Sister Xiangxing, what are you doing here?”
The words slipped out before she could stop herself, and a blush crept up her cheeks.
Ye Xiangxing was a doctor at this hospital; her presence here was perfectly natural.
“We’re testing compatibility for a lot of people today, so I came to help out,” Ye Xiangxing explained with a warm smile, glancing at Lu Chan before teasingly asking, “Xiao Jin, are you and my sister here for the test?”
Mu Jin’s heart skipped a beat, her cheeks flushing crimson. She nodded almost imperceptibly.
Entering this room meant they were here for the test, of course.
But being asked by someone she knew made her feel incredibly shy.
“Two S-Class individuals are bound to have a high compatibility score,” Ye Xiangxing said, adjusting her glasses, her voice brimming with excitement. “They might even set a new record! The current highest compatibility score is ninety-two percent.”
“Thank you, Sister Xiangxing,” Mu Jin said, her face flushed as she glanced furtively at Lu Chan.
Lu Chan’s expression shifted. She sat ramrod straight as the medical staff drew bl00d and collected glandular data.
The moment the needle pierced the back of her neck, Lu Chan’s brow furrowed, and she instinctively tried to block the medical staff’s hand.
She endured the pain with a grimace, suppressing her body’s instinctive reaction.
After the data collection, Lu Chan stood up and watched Mu Jin have her bl00d drawn by another staff member. She shot a sidelong glance at Ye Xiangxing.
Ye Xiangxing understood the unspoken request. Smiling, she approached Lu Chan and asked softly, “Sister, what’s on your mind?”
“After the compatibility test, destroy both my and Xiao Jin’s bl00d and glandular samples,” Lu Chan said sternly, her tone carrying an implicit command.
“Sister, don’t worry. The data won’t be leaked. We’ll dispose of everything properly after the tests,” Ye Xiangxing reassured her gently.
Lu Chan’s brow furrowed, and she emphasized her words, “I want to witness the destruction myself. It would be best if you handled it personally.”
During her initial differentiation test, the Old Master had arranged for all her data to be destroyed.
Currently, no one possessed her pheromone data.
Even when research institutions repeatedly requested her pheromone samples for study, she had always refused.
“Alright, since you’re asking, Sister Xiangxing, I’ll definitely help,” Ye Xiangxing said with a shrug, her gentle face tinged with resignation and compromise.
After Mu Jin’s data was collected, she watched anxiously as the medical staff carried their samples into the inner chamber.
Though she couldn’t see the procedures through the closed door, she couldn’t resist inching closer, as if every centimeter brought her a fraction more peace of mind.
“Ladies, please stay behind the safety line. You can’t come any closer,” a medical staff member warned.
Mu Jin snapped back to reality, offered an embarrassed smile, and obediently retreated.
Yet her clear, bright eyes remained fixed on the tightly shut door, as if awaiting a verdict, her long eyelashes trembling with nervous anticipation.
Noticing her distress, Lu Chan approached and asked softly, “Xiao Jin, what’s wrong?”
Mu Jin’s heart jolted, as if startled. When she turned and saw it was Lu Chan, she quickly shook her head vigorously.
She pressed her lips together, wanting to voice her worries but fearing she’d become tiresome by repeating them. Instead, she forced a faint smile.
Lu Chan frowned, puzzled. After a moment’s thought, she said, “The results will be out soon. There’s no need to worry.”
“I’m not…” Mu Jin opened her mouth, silently trying to explain, but her voice trailed off, her cheeks gradually flushing crimson.
The word “worry” made it sound like she was desperately eager to be with the person beside her.
And the truth was, she was.
She suddenly lost all strength to argue, only nodding with a flushed face.
Lu Chan patted Mu Jin’s head, a faint smile curving her lips.
Ever since they got into the car, Lu Chan had sensed that Mu Jin’s mood was different today.
In those dark, bright eyes, emotions she couldn’t quite decipher kept flickering.
Normally, Mu Jin was obedient and adorable, but today she seemed unusually temperamental.
One moment she was cheerful, the next she was downcast, her emotions shifting rapidly.
Her little head hung low most of the time, and though her face occasionally lit up with radiant smiles, something about them felt different.
Yet Lu Chan couldn’t quite put her finger on what exactly was off.
She felt a sense of helplessness.
Even when handling company crises or major projects, she had never felt so utterly clueless.
After waiting for about five minutes, the tightly sealed door finally swung open.
Mu Jin’s heart skipped a beat. She hurried over, trailing closely behind the medical staff.
She stood on tiptoe, her wide, round eyes scanning the results sheet with frantic speed.
When her gaze landed on the “Result” column and she saw the words “90%”, she couldn’t help but smile.
Lu Chan stood beside her, watching quietly, her expression utterly impassive.
Having already known the outcome, she felt neither curiosity nor surprise.
“Deputy Director Ye, it’s 95%! A new record!” The medical staff member holding the results sheet laughed excitedly.
“Excellent. Quickly give the sheet to Miss Mu,” Ye Xiangxing gently reminded, glancing at Mu Jin with a soft smile. “Xiao Jin looks like she can’t wait any longer.”
Caught red-handed, Mu Jin froze mid-reach, her fingers hovering in the air. After a moment’s hesitation, she quickly snatched the results.
Despite having already glimpsed the outcome, she still meticulously read every word, her eyes fixed on the page.
Her pale fingers unconsciously traced the paper’s edge, making a faint rustling sound.
Lu Chan’s gaze involuntarily drifted to Mu Jin’s fingers, which were tapping rhythmically.
An Omega’s skin was delicate and fair, even whiter than pristine paper. It seemed to shimmer with a luminous glow, its smoothness and tautness almost palpable.
“Sister Chan, look here!” Mu Jin excitedly thrust the results in front of Lu Chan, her slender fingers repeatedly tapping the numbers in the results column. Her eyes, flushed with excitement, glistened with a faint mist, as if tears were about to well up and spill over.
Lu Chan glanced at the results before shifting her gaze to Mu Jin’s rosy cheeks. She stared into those bright, sparkling eyes, her brow furrowing slightly. To her, the known outcome was merely a string of numbers. She couldn’t understand why Mu Jin was so overjoyed and emotional, on the verge of tears.
“Xiao Jin, don’t cry,” Lu Chan murmured, trying to comfort her.
A slender hand, clad in a clean white glove, reached over, holding a sheet of paper between its fingers. Lu Chan looked up and saw Ye Xiangxing’s gentle, smiling face.
“Xiao Jin, congratulations! No one has ever achieved such a high compatibility score before. Most people are ecstatic with anything over sixty percent, and those who reach eighty percent often weep with joy. A ninety-five percent match like yours is unprecedented in history,” Ye Xiangxing said, handing over the paper. Her gentle voice carried a soothing warmth.
Mu Jin’s nose stung with emotion. She had been holding back her joy, but these words instantly transformed the mist in her eyes into tears that streamed down her cheeks.
A flicker of panic crossed Lu Chan’s mind. Before she could even think, her soft fingertips had already brushed against Mu Jin’s cheek.
The warm tears felt scalding as they slid across her fingertips and dripped into her palm.
Lu Chan involuntarily tightened her fingers, trying to hold onto the tear.
The damp warmth spread through her palm, striking her heart like a direct blow.
Her eyes flickered, and she gradually relaxed her fingers.
“Sister, what’s wrong?” Ye Xiangxing asked with concern.
“Nothing,” Lu Chan replied coldly, turning her head to glance at her palm.
The warmth had vanished, leaving only a cold, tear-stained mark.
Yet she still remembered that scalding heat.
This wasn’t the first time she had seen Mu Jin cry.
For some reason, a dull ache throbbed in her chest.
This should have been a joyous occasion, so why was Mu Jin crying?
“Sister Chan, let’s go,” Mu Jin said, carefully placing the test results into her bag. She glanced at them one last time before zipping it shut.
She pressed her lips together, then forced a cheerful smile.
Under Lu Chan’s cold gaze, she reached out and linked her arm through Lu Chan’s, flashing a radiant smile.
Lu Chan paused, nodded slightly, and turned to leave.
As they exited, the next three candidates were called in for testing.
Mu Jin and Xiao Ya’s eyes met again, and they exchanged smiles.
“Congratulations,” Xiao Ya said softly, her eyes filled with envy and genuine well-wishing.
“Thank you,” Mu Jin typed back, the heat that had finally subsided in her cheeks returning, burning hot. She smiled and added, “Good luck to you too.”
“Thank you.”
Lu Chan watched from the side, her brow furrowed slightly. “Xiao Jin, do you know her?”
“No…” Mu Jin shook her head, her gaze drifting back to the room.
The door remained open, allowing them to see inside.
“If you don’t know her, why were you talking to her?” Lu Chan asked, her tone more like an interrogation than genuine curiosity.
“Perhaps we’re similar,” Mu Jin replied with a gentle smile, her lips curving into a warm, beautiful expression.
Lu Chan’s eyes narrowed as she said earnestly, “You’re an S-Class Omega, and she’s a Beta. How could you possibly be the same?”
Hearing this, a bitter feeling rose in Mu Jin’s heart. She shook her head with a wry smile, saying nothing.
Seeing Mu Jin’s enigmatic smile again, Lu Chan couldn’t help but feel a surge of irritation.
She tried to understand, to grasp the meaning, but felt like she was standing in the middle of a vast ocean, unable to find any direction forward.
Lu Chan clenched her fingers, her gaze fixed on the scene inside.
The three individuals were taking turns drawing bl00d and providing gland data. When it was the woman who had spoken to Mu Jin’s turn, another person gently comforted her, covering her eyes with one hand and holding her close.
Lu Chan seemed to grasp something, yet her confusion only deepened.
Her brow furrowed tightly, her fingers gripping so hard they ached.
Her expression was too obvious for Mu Jin to miss, and she couldn’t help but worry. “Sister Chan, what’s wrong? Are you feeling unwell?”
“I’m fine,” Lu Chan replied, her expression returning to its usual icy composure as she continued to watch the scene inside.
When the test results came back, the two women erupted in joyous cheers, embracing each other tightly.
Right in front of the staff, the two women kissed.
“It’s wonderful that they can be together,” Mu Jin said sincerely, a hint of envy flickering in her dark eyes.
She turned to look at Lu Chan, whose stunningly beautiful face remained impassive.
Mu Jin had once fantasized about this scene, even just a gentle embrace.
But it was only a fantasy.
Given the character and refinement of the woman beside her, Lu Chan would never do something that might compromise her dignity in public.
Lu Chan watched, a flicker of confusion appearing in her sharp, deep eyes before vanishing, replaced by her usual calm composure.
“Sister Chan, let’s go back. If Auntie hears this news, she’ll be so happy,” Mu Jin said with a soft smile, taking the lead toward the exit.
Lu Chan paused, glancing back.
The two women’s eyes were red-rimmed as they held hands tightly, smiling at each other.
The depth of emotion in that smile was something Lu Chan couldn’t comprehend.
Frowning, Lu Chan followed Mu Jin.
Lowering her gaze, she glanced at her palm before reaching out to take Mu Jin’s hand. Her voice was cool as she said, “Let’s go.”
Mu Jin’s eyes widened, and she froze in place.
