Her Little Mute Omega [Rebirth] - Chapter 39
Lu Chan drove to the office and resumed her work.
The afternoon passed quickly as she convened a meeting with various departments.
As night fell, she finally received a message from Mu Jin on her phone.
“Sister Chan, have you had dinner yet?”
“Not yet,” Lu Chan replied, staring at the screen for a few seconds before adding, “What about you?”
“I just finished. My mom made sweet and sour pork ribs—they were so delicious I ate too much!” Mu Jin sat at her desk, her lips curving into a happy smile. Her slender legs crossed beneath the table, swinging back and forth with childlike charm. The neatly arranged books on the desk awaited her attention.
“You’re not fat. You can eat more,” Lu Chan typed after a long pause.
“If I eat too much, I’ll get fat. Girls don’t look good when they’re too chubby,” Mu Jin replied, her eyes sparkling with amusement.
Though Lu Chan’s words weren’t romantic, simply chatting with her made Mu Jin’s heart flutter with joy.
“You could stand to gain a little weight,” Lu Chan typed earnestly.
In Mu Jin’s memory, Lu Chan had always been slender.
Even after their marriage, despite regularly consuming the tonics sent by the Old Master, she showed no improvement in her physique.
Mu Jin wished Lu Chan would gain some weight, imagining how much softer it would feel to hold her in her arms.
That frail, petite frame always made her feel like she could break it with the slightest pressure.
“Thank you, Sister Chan,” Mu Jin replied, covering her flushed cheeks with her hand. Her peripheral vision caught sight of the book.
Her gaze froze momentarily. She pursed her lips slightly and typed, “Sister Chan, you must be busy. I’m studying.”
“Mm,” Lu Chan replied instantly.
Watching the screen darken, Lu Chan felt a pang of reluctance. She reopened the chat history, pondered for a moment, and quickly typed, “Xiao Jin, study hard.”
The encouraging words, displayed in the chat interface, sounded almost like a reprimand.
When Mu Jin saw the notification, her eyes lit up. She immediately unlocked her phone to check the message.
The simple, straightforward sentence perfectly matched Lu Chan’s calm and composed demeanor.
Mu Jin couldn’t help but smile, replying cheerfully, “Okay, I’ll definitely study hard!”
After sending the message, she set her phone aside, opened her textbook, and flipped to the page where she had left off.
Though she still hoped for new messages, Lu Chan forced herself to focus on her book.
After putting away her phone, Lu Chan left work in a cheerful mood.
Returning to the Lu Family’s main residence, she gazed at the rows of villas, their silence bordering on eerie, and her heart instantly sank.
As she entered the house, her eyes immediately fell on the Old Master sitting on the sofa, his mood seemingly pleasant.
Unlike his own villa, which was teeming with servants, only the butler was present.
“Grandfather,” Lu Chan said, her eyes lowered slightly as she approached.
“I heard that our little corner of the world has gained another S-Class Omega,” Lu Wensheng said with a smile, his aged face radiating a benevolent warmth. “You should know this Omega.”
Lu Chan clearly saw the shrewd calculation in his aged eyes.
The Old Master’s directness meant he had already investigated everything thoroughly.
“Mm,” Lu Chan replied indifferently.
She stood calmly, showing no signs of panic or nervousness.
Meeting Lu Chan’s serene gaze, Lu Wensheng couldn’t suppress a flicker of anger.
His withered fingers tightened around his black cane, tapping it rhythmically against the floor.
Whenever the Old Master made that gesture, the villa’s servants would feel a pang of fear.
Lu Chan remained silent, waiting for the Old Master to lose patience and speak first.
“I heard that Omega has some connection to the Yan Family,” Lu Wensheng said with a smile, his amiable expression making it difficult to discern his true intentions. “If we’re being honest, she’s practically a young lady from a wealthy family.”
“If you’ve already investigated everything, Grandpa, why are you asking me?” Lu Chan retorted coolly, a hint of impatience flickering in her delicate brows.
“I’m just happy for you,” Lu Wensheng coughed, then continued slowly, “More options mean better odds. You won’t have to be manipulated by others.”
Lu Chan’s brow furrowed at these words, a flicker of displeasure crossing her face.
In her grandfather’s eyes, only Duan Miaohan had ever been a suitable Omega match for her.
Now that Mu Jin had also differentiated into an S-Class Omega, and given her ties to the Duan Family, she had become another candidate in the Old Master’s mind—or rather, a pawn to counter the Duan Family.
Though both were S-Class, Omegas were far rarer and more highly valued than Alphas.
Even though the Lu Family held higher status and influence than the Duan Family, the Old Master still had to show them deference.
This was solely because the Duan Family possessed an S-Class Omega.
“From now on, I won’t have to humiliate myself by begging people to come for tea,” Lu Wensheng sighed, a trace of bitterness crossing his aged face. “With one more option for you, your grandfather can finally rest a little easier.”
“Mm,” Lu Chan replied coldly, a hint of anger in her voice as she turned to ascend the stairs. “I’m going back to my room now.”
She disliked the Old Master’s tone, as if he were appraising Mu Jin like a commodity.
Though in his eyes, she herself was merely a pawn of the Lu Family.
Observing Lu Chan’s almost disrespectful attitude, the smile in Lu Wensheng’s eyes turned sinister.
After a moment, he regained his amiable expression, rose to his feet, and left.
Lu Chan returned to her room and immediately called Ye Xiangxing.
The call was answered quickly, and Ye Xiangxing’s tired voice came through the line. “Sis, calling me so late? What’s up?”
“Did you leak Xiao Jin’s information?” Lu Chan demanded coldly, her tone almost accusatory.
Ye Xiangxing adjusted her glasses, yawned, and smiled gently. “Sis, the emergence of an S-Class Omega is a major event. It needs to be reported to the hospital and local government. If all goes as expected, Xiao Jin’s case will be broadcast on major television stations within three days.”
Lu Chan paused, slightly stunned, and rubbed her temples.
She had overlooked this aspect.
Lately, her focus had been entirely on mending her relationship with Yan Zhu, and she had unexpectedly neglected the societal impact of Mu Jin’s situation.
“Alright, I understand,” Lu Chan said before hanging up.
Even when speaking to family, she maintained the same businesslike demeanor she used with her employees—efficient and direct, but lacking warmth.
Opening Mu Jin’s chat window, Lu Chan quickly typed and sent, “Xiao Jin, reporters will be interviewing you in the next few days. Should I arrange some security?”
“Thank you, Sister Chan, but there’s no need to trouble yourself. A reporter already came, and it might be in the news tomorrow,” Mu Jin replied instantly, her cheeks flushing slightly as she added, “How did you know, Sister Chan?”
She really wanted to ask, Is Sister Chan concerned about me? but felt too embarrassed to be so direct.
“Mm,” Lu Chan replied, paused for a moment, then typed a lengthy message—nearly three hundred words—detailing how Mu Jin should handle the media’s strange questions.
Mu Jin slowly read through it, feeling a warmth spread through her heart.
After a moment’s thought, she bit her lip, her cheeks burning, and typed, “Sister Chan, are you worried about me?”
Lu Chan’s heart skipped a beat when she saw the message.
The word “Mm” was already typed, but her finger hesitated over the send button.
After a moment of internal conflict, she didn’t send it.
“Xiao Jin, pay close attention to what I just said. Don’t make any mistakes during the interview,” Lu Chan replied, her expression as composed as ever.
The stark black characters of the message conveyed a sense of solemnity.
Mu Jin pursed her lips, a hint of disappointment flickering in her eyes.
She sighed softly, replied with a simple “Mm,” and turned off her phone to resume studying.
Lu Chan frowned at the solitary character.
A vague sense of unease settled in her chest, though she couldn’t quite pinpoint the reason.
Quickly scrolling through their chat history, Lu Chan suddenly realized that Mu Jin had always replied with at least two characters before, her messages brimming with warmth and energy.
This coldness was unprecedented.
She reread the exchange.
Across the screen, she noticed how many times she had used “Mm.”
Lu Chan’s brow furrowed. A realization seemed to dawn on her. Tapping her finger lightly, she sent another “Mm.”
Mu Jin saw the message and lowered her gaze, pondering how to respond.
Before she could decide, a new message popped up:
“This is in response to your earlier question.”
Mu Jin’s pupils dilated, almost disbelieving the words before her.
She brought her phone closer, nearly touching her face.
She read the simple line slowly, even tracing each character with her finger.
Mu Jin read the message back and forth several times, her heart pounding wildly as a wave of overwhelming joy surged through her.
She suddenly realized that even a simple “Mm-hmm” could sound incredibly sweet.
Mu Jin laughed happily, her eyes sparkling with delight as every cell in her brain buzzed with excitement.
She clenched and unclenched her fingers, finally managing to steady her trembling hands.
“Thank you, Sister Chan. I’ll do my best.”
“Mm-hmm,” Lu Chan replied instantly, her mood brightening. After a pause, she added two more words: “Go for it.”
Mu Jin’s smile widened, her cheeks flushing crimson.
She could clearly sense Lu Chan’s subtle changes.
Though these shifts were minor, almost insignificant to others, for Lu Chan, each small concession represented a significant compromise.
Perhaps one day, they could be like other couples, openly holding hands and embracing in crowded streets.
This was something Mu Jin had never dared to hope for, yet had always longed for.
Now, it seemed like it might actually be possible.
