Her Little Mute Omega [Rebirth] - Chapter 44
The Yan Family’s banquet was a grand affair, attended by every prominent figure in the city.
The vast venue was decorated with opulent elegance, every detail exuding exquisite beauty and dreamlike splendor.
Lu Chan stood quietly in a corner, wearing a luxurious black gown.
Occasionally, elaborately dressed Omegas would approach to strike up a conversation, only to be deterred by the icy aura she radiated.
Lu Chan glanced at her watch. The banquet was still over ten minutes from starting.
Normally, she would arrive precisely on time for such events. But because this occasion concerned Mu Jin, she had arrived half an hour early.
The Yan Family had taken strict precautions, stationing bodyguards at every entrance to prevent anyone from sneaking in to catch a glimpse of their S-Class Omega.
“Sister, why are you standing here alone?” A gentle, smiling voice came from behind her.
Lu Chan turned to see Ye Xiangxing approaching, her face radiant with a warm, spring-like smile.
In the short distance between them, several people greeted Ye Xiangxing warmly.
Lu Chan’s eyes narrowed, once again acutely aware of the stark contrast between them.
She knew she would never be as universally beloved and admired as Ye Xiangxing.
“Sister, why are you so gloomy?” Ye Xiangxing approached, smiling as she continued, “What’s wrong?”
“Nothing,” Lu Chan replied flatly, her gaze fixed on the distance.
Her reluctance to talk was obvious. Ye Xiangxing, sensing the hint, didn’t press further and followed her gaze.
In the center of the crowd, Yan Zhenwei stood surrounded by well-wishers, his face beaming as he accepted their congratulations.
The atmosphere instantly livened up with Yan Zhenwei’s arrival. The scattered groups of people who had been chatting now converged around him.
Lu Chan remained rooted to the spot, her only movement the frequent glances at her wristwatch.
Noticing her impatience and anxiety, Ye Xiangxing smiled knowingly, winked playfully, and leaned in to whisper, “Sister, are you waiting for Xiao Jin? With your status, you could just ask Old Yan to see her.”
Lu Chan lowered her wrist, offering no response.
After a moment, she murmured, “Yan Zhenwei is being extremely cautious this time. He won’t let anyone disrupt his carefully orchestrated plans.”
“That old fox knows how to play the game,” Ye Xiangxing said, her eyes twinkling with amusement but also a hint of disdain. “He’s dragging out the suspense to keep everyone on edge before finally letting Xiao Jin make her grand entrance.”
Lu Chan frowned, recognizing the underlying tone in Ye Xiangxing’s words.
She knew the Yan Family was using Mu Jin as a bargaining chip, but hearing it so bluntly from someone else still stung.
“Sister, it’s time. Xiao Jin should be coming out soon,” Ye Xiangxing said softly.
As soon as she finished speaking, the room fell silent, with only Yan Zhenwei’s voice carrying through the microphone.
“I’m delighted to have you all here tonight. Tonight, I want to formally introduce my granddaughter, a rare S-Class Omega…”
Yan Zhenwei’s opening remarks stretched for five minutes, dripping with arrogance and self-satisfaction.
He revealed only Mu Jin’s name, offering no specific details about her.
When he finished speaking, Mu Jin slowly walked onto the stage, smiling and waving to the crowd.
Dressed in an expensive evening gown, her already pale skin appeared even more luminous under the lights, making her the most dazzling sight in the room.
Watching from afar, Lu Chan’s heart skipped a beat, a flicker of admiration flashing in her eyes.
She had seen Mu Jin in expensive clothes before, but the radiant confidence in her smile tonight was something rarely witnessed.
At such a grand occasion, Mu Jin showed no signs of nervousness or unease. Even while holding the typing device, she displayed neither awkwardness nor embarrassment.
Lu Chan’s gaze drifted downward, landing on Mu Jin’s hands. When she saw they weren’t cat paws, a flicker of disappointment crossed her mind.
It seems the Yan Family won’t allow Mu Jin to show even the slightest hint of impropriety in public.
After exchanging a few words with the crowd, Mu Jin made a swift yet graceful exit.
A wave of discontent rippled through the crowd, with murmurs of complaint about not having seen enough of her.
“That old fox Yan Zhenwei is as cautious as ever,” Ye Xiangxing said with a smile. “He wouldn’t even let Xiao Jin stay a moment longer.”
Lu Chan remained unperturbed.
Shortly after, someone came to escort them to the inner hall.
Lu Chan glanced at the invited guests—all unmarried, outstanding Alphas from prominent families.
Yan Zhenwei has already conducted his own screening, weeding out those whose status and lineage fall short.
Upon entering the inner hall, they were made to wait again.
Lu Chan sat quietly, discreetly observing the others.
Apart from Ye Xiangxing, none of the others posed a threat to her.
After half an hour of waiting, some grew impatient, clamoring for Mu Jin to appear.
Yan Family servants stood nearby, neither intervening nor urging anyone to hurry.
Lu Chan immediately understood: this was another test.
If anyone else had done this, she would have left long ago.
Perhaps it would be more accurate to say she wouldn’t have even entered the door in the first place.
“Sister, the Yan Family is putting on quite the show,” Ye Xiangxing said, lowering her voice, a hint of displeasure in her tone. “S-Class Omegas may be rare, but they’re not exclusive to the Yan Family. Aren’t they afraid of offending people by acting like this?”
Lu Chan glanced around at the other Omegas. Some were already losing their patience and preparing to leave.
One by one, several Omegas departed, yet no one from the Yan Family emerged to speak.
Lu Chan frowned slightly, unsure whether this was the Yan Family’s test or Mu Jin’s own idea.
“Sister, are you still going to wait?” Ye Xiangxing asked.
Despite her growing impatience, she maintained a gentle smile.
“Mm-hmm.” Lu Chan glanced at her watch and continued waiting.
Ye Xiangxing looked surprised, almost disbelieving. “Sister, are you serious?”
“Do I look like I’m joking?” Lu Chan retorted coldly.
Ye Xiangxing fell silent, a strange glint flickering in her eyes.
There were Omegas even better than Mu Jin. If Lu Chan wanted to choose, she could easily find someone superior. Yet here she was, patiently waiting, allowing herself to be scrutinized.
This was hardly the style of the CEO of Lu Corporation.
“Sister, do you really like Xiao Jin?” Ye Xiangxing raised an eyebrow, her questioning tone betraying a certainty.
Lu Chan didn’t refute her. After a moment’s thought, she asked, “What about you?”
“Me? I’m just here for the fun of it,” Ye Xiangxing replied with a mischievous smile.
“Is that so?” Lu Chan frowned, unconvinced.
“Sister, don’t worry. I wouldn’t dare harbor any improper thoughts,” Ye Xiangxing assured her with a sincere expression.
Lu Chan felt slightly relieved, her tension easing considerably.
After an hour’s wait, Mu Jin finally appeared, having changed into a pristine white dress that made her look pure and radiant.
The moment she saw Lu Chan, Mu Jin smiled gently, her bright eyes sparkling with warmth.
Lu Chan stood up, about to speak, but Ye Xiangxing cut in first.
“Xiao Jin, you look absolutely stunning today! Every outfit suits you perfectly. Anyone who sees you would be utterly captivated,” Ye Xiangxing praised with a soft, genuine tone.
Mu Jin pursed her lips into a smile, a faint blush rising on her cheeks as she stole a glance at Lu Chan.
Seeing Lu Chan’s cold expression, Mu Jin’s heart skipped a beat. Feeling uneasy, she unconsciously clasped her hands together.
“Sister Chan, I’m so sorry to have kept you waiting,” Mu Jin typed carefully, her gaze lowered.
“Don’t worry about it. Seeing such a beauty like you, Xiao Jin, even if we had to wait another hour, it would be worth it,” Ye Xiangxing reassured her with a playful tone. Her flirtatious words, delivered with such humor, made them sound far less suggestive.
Lu Chan stood silently to the side, unable to interject a word.
Even if she were given the chance to speak, she couldn’t match Ye Xiangxing’s eloquence and charm.
“Really, Sister Chan?” Mu Jin’s face flushed even deeper, a faint smile playing on her lips.
Lu Chan nodded.
Mu Jin’s eyes immediately curved into crescents as she beamed with delight.
She instinctively reached out to link arms with Lu Chan, but abruptly remembered that things were different now. She needed to maintain the proper decorum of the Yan Family’s Young Mistress.
“Thank you, Sister Chan,” Mu Jin said with a soft laugh, her eyes sparkling as she gazed at Lu Chan. “I’m so glad to see everyone here. I made some pastries myself—I hope you won’t mind them.”
“We’re lucky to have them! How could we possibly mind?” Ye Xiangxing immediately chimed in with a smile.
Her lively presence instantly eased the atmosphere, making everyone feel more relaxed.
The guests were all acquainted, and Ye Xiangxing effortlessly engaged each of them in conversation.
Lu Chan sat quietly, enjoying the pastries, her peripheral vision occasionally drifting toward Mu Jin.
Sensing her gaze, Mu Jin turned and offered a sweet smile, her eyes brimming with joy.
She had feared Lu Chan wouldn’t stay and wait, yet here she was, having waited so patiently.
Though Ye Xian had told her she was special in Lu Chan’s eyes, Mu Jin still struggled with insecurity, constantly worrying that Lu Chan might grow to dislike her.
