- Chapter 12 - I Remember You
Nothing could leave a more lasting impression than Gu Zhichou.
How could Shi Mi ever forget her?
For every moment of her conscious life, she had thought of Gu Zhichou.
Without pause, not even for a second.
Shi Mi glanced at Gu Zhichou’s loose hospital gown, longing to ask, “Are you better now?”
The last time she tried to sneak a peek into Gu Zhichou’s room, she had accidentally bumped into her.
Thankfully, they hadn’t spoken.
What if her true intentions had been exposed?
Noticing Shi Mi’s gaze fixed on her hand, Gu Zhichou blinked, puzzled.
She naturally reached out to take Shi Mi’s hand, smiling. “Whether you really remember or not, how about I test you?”
A flicker of panic crossed Shi Mi’s eyes as she reached into her pocket for her phone, her fingertips trembling.
She quickly scrolled through photos in her album.
Gu Zhichou frowned, leaning in to peek, but Shi Mi pressed her palm against Gu Zhichou’s cheek.
The soft warmth against her skin made Gu Zhichou’s lashes flutter.
The fragrant scent scattered her thoughts, momentarily erasing her purpose.
Shi Mi couldn’t let her see, dared not let her see.
Because every photo in that album was of Gu Zhichou.
From the moment she had memories.
Smiling, crying, destitute, triumphant.
Every expression, close-up, distant shot.
Thousands upon thousands.
Shi Mi was a pervert who spied on others’ lives.
These photos had accompanied her through every conscious moment.
She knew them by heart.
Yet when Gu Zhichou said she would test her, Shi Mi still felt a pang of nervousness.
She feared being inaccurate, feared failing to capture the full beauty of her subject.
Shi Mi’s heart trembled faintly as she flipped through the photos again, each image reigniting her excitement.
So beautiful, so beautiful…
My sickly beauty.
If only you could take this many photos for me every day.
Not enough, never enough.
Shi Mi’s shoulders shook as her festering emotions fermented in her eyes.
A blissful smile curled her lips.
When she looked up at Gu Zhichou, her darkness seemed even more pronounced.
But Shi Mi was a master of disguise, relishing her act of innocence.
Tears welled in the corners of her eyes, making her appear terrified.
In truth, she was simply overwhelmed with excitement.
Like a tungsten filament deliberately snapped, so her light would no longer illuminate others.
Gu Zhichou, mistaking her reaction for fear, patted her head and said, “Just kidding! Why’d you take it so seriously?”
“Silly girl.”
How could she possibly answer after only meeting me twice?
Shi Mi gripped Gu Zhichou’s hand, her grip tightening painfully before she belatedly released it.
The Little Mute retreated a few steps as if realizing she had made a mistake, looking utterly wronged.
That timid yet earnestly hopeful expression made Gu Zhichou’s heart itch.
She licked her lips and quickly explained, “I’m not mad at you. Don’t be afraid of me, Little Mute.”
Aiyo, didn’t you say she was just helping you out?
I’m so worried! Is she about to pounce?
Wait, why hasn’t anyone explained who this person is?
Regardless, she’s so well-behaved.
Gu Zhichou’s eyes narrowed dangerously at the last bullet comment.
Well-behaved?
Could this person have taken a liking to her Little Mute?
That wouldn’t do at all. She had found her first.
She had discovered this treasure.
Even though she wasn’t actively pursuing the Little Mute, Gu Zhichou felt that certain things, once in her possession, were not to be taken away.
Within the plot, she had no control.
But outside the plot, couldn’t she at least have what she wanted?
If not, that would be terribly unfair to her.
Gu Zhichou reached out, lowered her head, and smiled warmly at the Little Mute.
“Do you want to write something?”
Last time, Shi Mi had written in her palm, each stroke deliberate and careful, her head bowed in focused obedience.
Shi Mi gazed at her, a blush blooming on her pale cheeks, and grinned foolishly. She pulled a small notebook and pen from her pocket, intending to write something.
But Gu Zhichou snatched the notebook and held it high above her head, a mischievous smile playing on her lips. Her phoenix eyes sparkled with cunning.
“Come and get it,” she taunted.
Shi Mi puffed out her cheeks and took a half-step forward, rising onto her tiptoes to reach for it. She could actually touch it, but deliberately pretended she couldn’t, sensing Gu Zhichou’s barely concealed jealousy. Though subtle, Shi Mi’s sharp intuition had picked up on it. She wanted to force Gu Zhichou to voice her feelings.
But she also needed to offer a reward. Gu Zhichou’s pride was too strong; if she realized she was being manipulated, she might never speak to Shi Mi again. Shi Mi couldn’t risk that. It had been difficult enough to capture Gu Zhichou’s attention in the first place. Losing her now would drive Shi Mi mad.
Her every move had been carefully calculated: the distance between them, the rhythm of her breathing—all part of Shi Mi’s plan to gradually erode Gu Zhichou’s defenses, drawing them closer until they were as intertwined as flowers clinging to their vines, pressed tightly together, each suppressing the storms raging within.
Gu Zhichou’s gaze darkened, and she shifted the notebook in her hand.
Shi Mi quietly slipped the note into Gu Zhichou’s pocket.
“You write in my palm,” she signed. “I understand.”
“No need for anything else.”
Still standing on tiptoe, Shi Mi suddenly saw Gu Zhichou return the note. Losing her balance, she tumbled into Gu Zhichou’s arms.
She looked up, nodded obediently, and then tugged at the corner of Gu Zhichou’s sleeve, as if apologizing.
Gu Zhichou nearly swooned from the sheer cuteness, but she had to maintain her aloof heiress persona.
She cleared her throat, tossed her curly hair, and blinked coquettishly.
“Little Mute, do you know who I am?”
Gu Zhichou suddenly realized she hadn’t actually introduced herself. She wondered if this Passerby A from the manga even recognized her.
Shi Mi tilted her head and smiled faintly, like a flower blooming. She looked at Gu Zhichou and began signing.
Gu Zhichou’s eyes widened, her gaze following Shi Mi’s hands.
Shi Mi pointed to herself, then wrote something in the air before touching her forehead. Finally, she pointed to Gu Zhichou.
Fascinated by this new form of communication, Gu Zhichou started guessing.
“You? Me? What does this mean? Are you saying you miss me?”
Gu Zhichou loved teasing people, especially those who seemed timid. She wondered if teasing Shi Mi would make her blush.
But Shi Mi wasn’t actually the shy type; she merely feigned a blush.
Then, holding the other woman’s hand, she opened her palm.
Her index finger gently wrote:
I remember you.
Gu Zhichou leaned down, her face close to Shi Mi’s, understanding her meaning through the slight tickle.
Shi Mi rubbed her ear, thinking, It’s so hot today. Why is my ear so warm?
Gu Zhichou mimicked Shi Mi’s earlier gesture, repeating it.
“Like this?”
“I… remember… you.”
Shi Mi paused, strange thoughts resurfacing in her mind.
Has she always remembered me?
She shook her head, took Gu Zhichou’s hand, and guided her through the motions.
Gu Zhichou’s eyes were fixed on Shi Mi, yet she still couldn’t grasp it.
Shi Mi remained patient, teaching her again and again.
Finally, she realized the letter being written was “J.”
Gu Zhichou crossed her arms and huffed, “As expected, I’m not only naturally beautiful but also brilliant.”
“You’ve already learned it,” Shi Mi said, her lips curving into a smile. Seizing the moment while Gu Zhichou was distracted, she reached out and took her hand.
My delicate beauty, you’ve practiced this so many times.
You said you remember me.
