- Chapter 14 - You Really Didn't Lie to Me
Yes, Shi Mi was also a person without a self.
Gu Zhichou nearly crushed her against her chest, her arms trembling slightly as she held her.
“You won’t forget me, but you’ll never have any other feelings for me.”
She chuckled softly, a sound tinged with sorrow.
My Little Mute—only I think of you as “mine.”
You don’t care, and you never will.
Because you don’t even have your own consciousness.
Gu Zhichou dared to say this because she was certain Shi Mi couldn’t understand.
Or even comprehend.
Shi Mi was indeed confused. She didn’t understand why her delicate beauty was so sad.
She felt so lonely.
The reason Gu Zhichou cared so deeply for Shi Mi was because, in this world where she was constantly observed, Shi Mi was the only one who could help her break free.
First from the plot, then from the entire comic.
Gu Zhichou truly had no friends, let alone anyone she could confide in.
But Shi Mi was different. She couldn’t speak.
A perfect listener.
Anything Gu Zhichou said or did in her presence would remain completely confidential.
In other words, with Shi Mi, Gu Zhichou could freely express her sorrows and vulnerabilities.
There would be no leaks, no fear of her pride being compromised.
Even secret tears were permitted.
Shi Mi felt like her bones were about to snap from the crushing embrace, but she merely smiled faintly.
She gently patted Gu Zhichou’s back.
Hospitals really aren’t good places, she thought.
That’s why the sickly beauty is so unhappy.
Shi Mi and Gu Zhichou were complete opposites. Every moment Shi Mi spent with her was filled with happiness.
If there was any regret, it was that each meeting ended with an abrupt farewell.
Gu Zhichou had no way of knowing what the world would be like after Shi Mi left, and Shi Mi couldn’t tell her how desperately she wished they could take a proper photo together, openly and without sneaking around.
But she didn’t dare. She feared Gu Zhichou would sense something was wrong, and even more, that she would discover everything Shi Mi had stolen from her.
Shi Mi gripped Gu Zhichou’s sleeve tightly, terrified she would vanish again in the next instant.
The sudden emptiness was like quicksand, slipping away between her fingers.
This wasn’t the first time she had tried to hold onto Gu Zhichou, but Shi Mi knew she lacked the power to do so.
Just as she now resented her inability to speak, to offer comfort, or even to give Gu Zhichou the slightest warmth.
If she couldn’t even hold a conversation, how could she hope to communicate anything else?
Shi Mi’s greatest strength lay in her mental fortitude. Across vast stretches of time, she had always managed to piece together her shattered heart, to confront herself and others with unwavering honesty.
She gently pushed Gu Zhichou, pressed two fingers to her tear-stained cheeks, and swiped downward, then waved her hand. Her eyes were filled with concern.
Don’t cry.
This time, Gu Zhichou understood. She sniffled, crossed her arms, and huffed.
“Who’s crying?”
“If you dare tell anyone, you’ll regret it.”
Shi Mi grinned and nodded.
I won’t tell anyone. I don’t even have the ability to.
Gu Zhichou brushed her bangs aside, instantly regaining her elegant composure.
She patted Shi Mi’s head and said, “You have to keep my secrets.”
“No matter what I tell you in the future.”
She paused, then smirked mischievously, her phoenix eyes dangerously alluring.
“After all, you’re the perfect confidante, aren’t you?”
“Little Mute~”
Last time she called her a robot; now she’s a confidante.
Shi Mi poked her dimple, thinking, This woman really doesn’t know how to say nice things.
“Oh, right,” Gu Zhichou said, pulling out her phone and opening the camera. “Let’s take a picture.”
She wasn’t sure if the photo would be blurred by the distortions of time and space, but she wanted to try. This was the only way she could remember Shi Mi when they were apart.
Gu Zhichou had never understood why people clung to objects to remember loved ones. But now she understood. It was born of helplessness, a last resort. If two people could always be together, why would they need external reminders?
Gu Zhichou had even asked for Shi Mi’s phone number, knowing it was likely useless. Still, she added it to her contacts, feeling a strange sense of satisfaction as she held Shi Mi close.
Thankfully, time and space couldn’t erase Gu Zhichou’s memories. This gave her enough time to figure everything out, to claim Shi Mi completely, and finally keep her by her side.
Gu Zhichou pinched Shi Mi’s cheek and smiled at the camera. But the photo didn’t turn out as she’d hoped. Shi Mi wasn’t looking at the lens; she was looking at Gu Zhichou.
Gu Zhichou frowned. “Little Mute, you need to look at the camera when taking photos.”
Shi Mi gripped her hand and wrote:
Not as beautiful as you.
Gu Zhichou’s tail instantly perked up. She was ridiculously easy to please.
“Of course! This young lady was born with natural beauty.”
“Alright, then I’ll allow you to look at me.”
Shi Mi raised an eyebrow and deliberately turned away, refusing to meet her gaze.
Gu Zhichou grabbed her hand and twisted her face back.
“I just gave you permission, and you immediately look away? Are you doing this on purpose?”
“Already bored, huh?”
Shi Mi innocently turned her head, her eyes shimmering like water. She looked like she’d been wronged.
Gu Zhichou: …
Why do I feel like I’m the one being bullied here?
She was practically being led around by Shi Mi’s little finger.
Gu Zhichou glared fiercely at the person before turning away in a huff.
“If I ever acknowledge you again, I’ll change my name from Gu Zhichou.”
More and more people are watching…
Everyone take notes! This will be on the test. I bet ten Zhizhi-snaps she’ll regret this.
I’ll bet twenty!
Gu Zhichou seethed inwardly. These people watch my life every day—shouldn’t they be on my side? Why are they enjoying my embarrassment now?
Shi Mi, standing behind her, poked her waist.
Gu Zhichou glanced back out of the corner of her eye, but their gazes accidentally met. She immediately looked away with a huff.
“Don’t think this will make me pay attention to you. I’m leaving soon.”
Shi Mi smiled, wrapping her arms around Gu Zhichou’s waist. She pressed her ear against Gu Zhichou’s back, as if trying to hear her heartbeat.
Whether you leave or not, I just want to be closer to you.
Feeling the warmth against her back, Gu Zhichou couldn’t help but giggle. Just as she was about to speak, she sensed a shift in time. In an instant, she found herself standing at the hospital entrance. Everything that had just happened had vanished.
It was her discharge day.
Shi Mi stared at the empty space in her arms, a bitter smile on her face.
You really weren’t lying.
You didn’t want to pay attention to me, so you left.
Her consciousness sank back into the water. Shi Mi reached out, trying to touch the light, but was forced to close her eyes again.
She suddenly remembered that night when fate had told her she should be doing the countless chores she had done countless times before. Instead, Shi Mi had stood at the end of the corridor outside Gu Zhichou’s hospital room, gazing at it for a long time. Finally, she went downstairs and found a piano, playing music for her all night long.
Shi Mi’s heart should have been empty of anyone. But then she met Gu Zhichou. So she abandoned everything, wanting only to give her a good dream.
