- Chapter 18 - The End of Longing
Fortunately, they were in a quiet, inconspicuous alley.
Gu Zhichou glanced up at the sun and fanned herself, trying to cool her flushed cheeks.
She turned and wrapped Shi Mi in a full embrace, as if making up for the missed hug last time. Her eyes lowered guiltily as she nuzzled the top of Shi Mi’s head.
“I knew you missed me,” she murmured. “How long has it been since we last saw each other?”
Shi Mi chuckled at the nuzzling. She had no real sense of how long they’d been apart. Ever since they parted, her days had been spent searching for Gu Zhichou, and her nights were filled with fragmented, paper-thin memories of her.
But what mattered was that, though Gu Zhichou hadn’t said it, she clearly missed Shi Mi too.
Shi Mi didn’t understand romantic feelings and hadn’t even considered them. She was simply drawn to the person who gave her life meaning.
So when Gu Zhichou asked, she answered truthfully.
Didn’t Gu Zhichou dislike beating around the bush? Shi Mi thought. Then I’ll be the straightforward one.
It was a perfect balance: one who spoke but preferred to keep her thoughts hidden, and one who couldn’t speak but wore her heart on her sleeve.
As Gu Zhichou held Shi Mi, her mind swirled with unspoken words. She still owed Shi Mi an apology from last time, but she inwardly groaned, utterly clueless how to begin.
What had felt like a mere camera cut to Gu Zhichou might have been a whole week for Shi Mi.
Perhaps she doesn’t even remember.
Gu Zhichou pondered, momentarily distracted, and failed to notice Shi Mi staring intently at her.
Snapping back to attention, she cleared her throat and said proudly, “I know I’m beautiful.”
“But you don’t have to stare like that.”
Shi Mi blinked, then suddenly cupped Gu Zhichou’s face, examining her features closely from every angle.
Gu Zhichou felt an inexplicable wave of embarrassment.
She reached out and playfully tapped Shi Mi’s head.
“Enough already. I’m already narcissistic enough—don’t make it worse.”
The bullet comments erupted in sighs:Â So you do know!
But Shi Mi rarely had the chance to observe Gu Zhichou so closely.
She couldn’t stop looking, especially when she saw her own reflection in Gu Zhichou’s pupils.
Those beautiful, phoenix-shaped eyes were always crinkled in a smile.
Shi Mi couldn’t suppress the desire welling up inside her.
She gently wrote on Gu Zhichou’s hand:
Will you leave?
The question hit Gu Zhichou like a paper lantern drenched in rain.
To be honest, she didn’t know.
But she would definitely have to leave.
Not because she wanted to, though.
If she could, Gu Zhichou would stay here all day, just to be with Shi Mi.
She shook her head, pinching Shi Mi’s cheek with a hint of frustration.
“Of course I don’t want to leave. What’s more fun than staying here and teasing you?”
Shi Mi puffed out her cheeks and let go of Gu Zhichou, pulling away from the hug.
“Why are you angry again?”
Gu Zhichou felt wronged, but she refused to say anything.
I didn’t even say anything that bad.
But she just doesn’t realize it.
Doesn’t this make us seem closer?
Wait, closer?
Gu Zhichou had always believed she was drawn to Shi Mi because Shi Mi could save her.
But now, that simple reason seemed to have shifted.
She couldn’t quite put her finger on how it had changed.
For now, she needed to coax Shi Mi.
You made her angry, you gotta fix it yourself! Go for it, Zhizhi!
Why don’t you ever learn? Just sweeten your words a little, and winning her over would be a piece of cake!
Gu Zhichou inwardly panicked. How was she supposed to come up with sweet words?
Once they slipped out, there was no taking them back.
Besides, this wasn’t about winning someone over.
Gu Zhichou pitifully leaned closer, quietly taking Shi Mi’s hand.
“Little Mute, can you really bear to ignore me?”
“If you ignore me, I’ll fly away later, and you won’t be able to find me.”
Shi Mi was truly exasperated with this woman.
What kind of way is this to coax someone? Threatening me with herself!
But Gu Zhichou’s words made sense.
Shi Mi had no idea where Gu Zhichou went each time.
Just as she never understood where Gu Zhichou came from.
Suddenly, Shi Mi felt an overwhelming longing to know everything about Gu Zhichou.
She wanted to hold onto her desperately, even if just for a moment.
Every second without seeing Gu Zhichou felt like unbearable torment.
The hand that slipped into her palm was exceptionally soft.
Shi Mi couldn’t resist tightening her grip, pressing their palms together.
Their fingers intertwined perfectly. Gu Zhichou naturally noticed the change, but she remained silent, letting Shi Mi hold her hand.
I’ll never tell Shi Mi, she thought. Holding hands like this actually feels quite nice.
Of course, I don’t have any ulterior motives. Two women holding hands is perfectly normal, Gu Zhichou reassured herself internally, though she wasn’t sure who she was trying to convince.
Shi Mi turned around, lifted their joined hands, and smiled.
She wanted to ask if Gu Zhichou liked the cake, but there was nowhere to write.
Frowning slightly, she finally sighed and embraced Gu Zhichou.
Unable to speak, the best way to convey her feelings was to press close, sharing her warmth completely.
As if sensing her thoughts, Gu Zhichou patted her head and asked, “Will those people scold you for secretly bringing me cake?”
Shi Mi shook her head and began signing.
No one can say anything about me.
Gu Zhichou squinted, pondering for a long time. She realized she really needed to take sign language classes.
Otherwise, she wouldn’t understand a word Shi Mi was signing.
She could only guess wildly.
Finally, relying on her extraordinary precognitive abilities, she said, “The cake was delicious.”
“I’ll buy you one next time, okay?”
Shi Mi suppressed a smile, knowing Gu Zhichou hadn’t understood, but she didn’t mind at all.
She nodded obediently.
Just as she was about to write something else, she suddenly noticed Gu Zhichou’s pupils constrict.
Shi Mi instinctively tightened her grip on Gu Zhichou’s hand.
Are you leaving?
Gu Zhichou blinked and glanced up at the sky.
She had indeed sensed that energy fluctuation earlier, but Shi Mi’s sudden tug had pulled her out of its influence.
The shock was overwhelming.
For a moment, Gu Zhichou couldn’t react.
Then, as if fireworks were exploding in her eyes, she threw her arms around Shi Mi and cheered.
“You’re amazing!”
“I knew I wasn’t wrong about you.”
The Shi Mi who could save her in front of the female lead could also pull her out of this sea of suffering now.
Though she didn’t know how long this reprieve would last, it was enough.
With this opportunity, the rest was up to Gu Zhichou’s efforts.
Shi Mi looked a little bewildered, but she smiled faintly and patted Gu Zhichou’s back.
But in the very next moment, everything changed.
Gu Zhichou’s body began to fade, becoming transparent. The arms embracing her passed right through Shi Mi.
Panic seized Shi Mi, and she desperately reached out to grab hold of something, anything.
But her hands grasped only air.
Gu Zhichou knew the author was furious.
The storyboards he had drawn hadn’t appeared on time, enraging him.
Now, he was forcibly dragging Gu Zhichou to the next scene.
For once, Gu Zhichou felt no sadness.
Instead, she smiled brightly at Shi Mi.
“Next time we meet, I’ll bring you cake.”
As long as you never forget me.
Shi Mi’s eyes stung with tears. Her hands felt nothing, even as they seemed to embrace Gu Zhichou.
In the end, she was holding only empty air.
This time, Shi Mi didn’t immediately retreat to the hated little black room.
Instead, she stood rooted to the spot, tears streaming down her face, blurring her vision.
She bit her lip, the grief in her heart transforming into a torrential downpour.
Gu Zhichou.
If only the end of longing could be reunion.
