- Chapter 24 - Discipline
Shi Mi slowly lifted her gaze, tears welling in her eyes with a single blink.
Gu Zhichou, who had been about to unleash a minor storm, instantly deflated.
Pity welled in her bewildered eyes.
“What’s wrong…?”
During their last parting, Shi Mi had cried even more miserably. Gu Zhichou had been utterly helpless to comfort her, as Shi Mi couldn’t perceive her fading transparency. Instead, Shi Mi saw the very fabric of space reshaping itself, pulling them further and further apart.
The sight of tears reminded Gu Zhichou of her powerlessness back then, fueling her self-loathing.
Gu Zhichou lowered her head, beginning to reflect. Is she still dwelling on what happened last time? Is that why she’s so upset?
She didn’t know how Shi Mi perceived her. Shi Mi likely couldn’t see the shifting spatial layers and endless transformations. But she must have witnessed something truly terrible.
Shi Mi grabbed Gu Zhichou’s hand and wrote on it:
Don’t blame yourself.
It had to be said, Shi Mi’s tears flowed with unnatural ease. Perhaps even a fleeting thought of that time could unconsciously trigger them.
Gu Zhichou pressed her lips together, her beautiful eyes dimming, yet she stubbornly replied, “I’m not blaming myself.”
A lie. She was absolutely blaming herself. Lying was her shield, a reflex to seal off her heart.
Gu Zhichou withdrew her hand and reached for the cake on the table.
“A little sweetness will make you forget your tears.”
She held the cake to Shi Mi’s lips, her smile radiant, completely masking her earlier despondency.
When Shi Mi reached to embrace her waist, Gu Zhichou instinctively recoiled.
Perhaps her subconscious was at play, that lingering sense of guilt and remorse preventing her from being intimate with Shi Mi.
This reaction left Shi Mi’s heart feeling instantly hollow.
The sinister glint in her eyes vanished as quickly as it had appeared, replaced by an even greater flood of tears.
Gu Zhichou had never seen anyone cry so intensely in her entire life.
She immediately moved closer to comfort Shi Mi.
“I wasn’t ignoring you, I just…”
Shi Mi grabbed Gu Zhichou’s collar and yanked her down, silencing her explanation.
She didn’t want to hear any excuses.
Just seeing Gu Zhichou pull away sent a dull, aching pain through her chest.
Shi Mi’s tears weren’t a sign of vulnerability; they were another form of violence—a tool to discipline and control Gu Zhichou, to forcibly drag her prey back from any attempt to escape.
Shi Mi didn’t need words; her icy gaze alone could intimidate Gu Zhichou.
Yet she still layered this with a veneer of tenderness and helplessness.
She gripped Gu Zhichou’s wrist tightly, her thumb tracing words in her palm:
How to hug? Do I need to teach you?
Gu Zhichou swallowed hard, her mouth already dizzy with the swirling sensation of Shi Mi’s tongue.
The ticklish sensation in her palm ignited a strange, giddy joy within her.
With her free hand, Gu Zhichou wrapped her arm around Shi Mi’s waist, pulling them closer together.
“Little Mute, you’re being…”
She met his slightly sharp gaze and instantly swallowed her words.
“You’re so mean,” she said, sounding aggrieved.
Shi Mi’s lips curved into a smile as he gently squeezed her fingers, as if coaxing a child.
Gu Zhichou’s ears flushed crimson as he gripped Shi Mi’s hand, pulling him down onto the sofa and wrapping his arms around his waist.
“Let me tell you, being mean to me won’t get you anywhere.”
Really?
Shi Mi tilted his head back to look at her, his true purpose already achieved.
He playfully patted Gu Zhichou’s cheek twice, mimicking the way she often patted his head.
The light, ticklish slaps startled Gu Zhichou, who narrowed his eyes after a moment of confusion.
“You hit me?”
Shi Mi’s gaze remained calm, showing no fear as he leaned in to kiss the corner of her lips, using the warmth of his lips and tongue to distract her.
Just as Gu Zhichou was about to succumb to the kiss, he playfully slapped her cheek twice again.
It was like training a puppy.
She wasn’t allowed to take her eyes off Shi Mi, nor was she permitted to become too immersed in the moment.
Gu Zhichou was expected to react exactly as Shi Mi wanted her to.
Gu Zhichou frowned, feeling deeply uncomfortable.
Every time she tried to lower her head for a deep kiss, she was jolted awake by a slap. Her half-flushed face was a mix of anger and embarrassment, burning red and numb.
Gu Zhichou knew she was being controlled by Shi Mi in some strange way.
Yet her false pride had been suddenly infiltrated by desire, which her mind kept romanticizing.
She even found herself anticipating the next resounding slap on her cheek, like a drumbeat pounding against her abnormal, morbid heart.
“What right do you have to hit me?”
Gu Zhichou’s phoenix eyes were dangerous and alluring, but she still pinned Shi Mi down, refusing to let her rise.
She stared at the hand that had struck her, longing to bite it, but found only empty air.
In Shi Mi’s eyes, Gu Zhichou was merely a sulking dog, now attempting to bite its master.
But Shi Mi remained unconcerned. If Gu Zhichou were truly angry, she would have left long ago.
Her coming to confront Shi Mi now was just a pathetic attempt to cover her own shameful desires with a veneer of dignity.
Shi Mi had always been the one in control, though she rarely revealed it.
Even if she truly angered Gu Zhichou, she knew how to win her back.
Shi Mi smiled and kissed her, slapping her cheek twice more.
She wrapped her arms around Gu Zhichou’s waist and traced words on her back:
Don’t you want this?
Gu Zhichou was still reeling from the stinging pain on her cheek when the itching on her back snapped her back to reality.
“No… you can’t just hit me like that! Who do you think I am, someone you can just slap around?”
Still the face.
Isn’t that a blatant disregard for my pride?
Shi Mi withdrew her hand, refraining from striking again, but the sweet kisses ceased as well.
She wanted Gu Zhichou to understand this was a punishment—for the torment of her distancing herself.
Pain and tenderness were shared.
Shi Mi was capable of deep affection, yet she could also be utterly ruthless in certain ways.
For instance, she often viewed Gu Zhichou as a wind-up toy—something to be taken apart and dissected in order to fully understand its inner workings.
However, Gu Zhichou felt a pang of disappointment at Shi Mi’s withdrawal, though her pride prevented her from admitting it.
In the end, she could only bite Shi Mi’s cheek, snarling, “You’ve already hit me! Taking it back now won’t change anything.”
“It doesn’t even hurt anyway. Do whatever you want.”
Shi Mi turned her head, a sly smile curving her lips.
I told you, you like it.
She wrapped her arms around Gu Zhichou’s neck, burying her face in the crook of her neck and inhaling deeply.
When she looked up, she noticed the surrounding annihilation was no longer as alarming as before.
Gu Zhichou, cradled in Shi Mi’s arms, began to fade into transparency.
Sensing this, Shi Mi whispered in her ear, “I’ll settle the score with you next time. Don’t go crying this time.”
Shi Mi nodded, the sensation of Gu Zhichou’s presence in her arms gradually diminishing.
She sat up, surveying the desolate, dust-choked landscape around her.
Just like before.
After Gu Zhichou left, her world felt like the end of days had arrived.
It was as if everything had been completely destroyed and then remade from scratch.
Shi Mi closed her eyes, spread her arms, and leaned backward, falling into an endless abyss.
In truth, nothing felt wrong. If Gu Zhichou didn’t exist, then this world had no reason to exist either.
Around Shi Mi swirled countless memories, like shards of glass, all fragments of Gu Zhichou’s face.
They cut into her skin, yet brought a warmth she desperately craved.
So our fates were destined to be such stark opposites. Only now do I understand.
If you sail toward that dreamlike harbor,
Then I must drift away from the shore.
