- Chapter 30 - Heart's Thoughts
Should I call her name? Shi Mi wondered. In her dreams, she had called it countless times.
In her fantasies, she could speak.
Shi Mi didn’t truly understand why she had lost her voice, but she always trusted Gu Zhichou.
She believed Gu Zhichou would keep her promises.
Even if she broke them, it wouldn’t matter. As long as Gu Zhichou was there, everything would be alright.
Shi Mi’s memories were fragmented, some scenes so hazy she couldn’t even recall them herself.
She figured it was simply because they were too distant, lost to time.
Yet the voice in her dreams felt familiar.
It was as if, long ago, Shi Mi had once been able to speak.
She rubbed her temples, unwilling to delve deeper.
The effort would only exhaust her.
Gu Zhichou went outside and asked Lan Hui to bring two glasses of milk.
Since childhood, Gu Zhichou had struggled with insomnia, though it rarely troubled her now.
Still, she maintained the habit.
They ate most of the cake, and the remainder was taken to the refrigerator.
Shi Mi watched with a hint of reluctance. She didn’t know when she’d visit Gu Zhichou’s home again.
Would the cake still be there then?
Gu Zhichou returned with two glasses of warm milk, handing one to Shi Mi with a radiant smile.
“Drink this before bed,” she said. “It’ll help you sleep.”
A sharp pain shot through Shi Mi’s head, and for a moment, her hand holding the milk went numb.
With a thud, the entire glass fell, shattering on the floor.
A childish female voice lingered in her ears:
“Can’t sleep either? Then drink some milk.”
Shi Mi’s vision blurred. Whose voice was that?
Suddenly, someone gripped her hand. She looked up and met Gu Zhichou’s eyes, filled with concern.
“Don’t touch it. You’ll cut yourself.”
Shi Mi unconsciously crouched down, reaching for the shards.
The scent of milk filled the air, mingled with a faint metallic tang of bl00d.
She glanced down blankly and saw several shallow cuts on her fingers, oozing bl00d.
Gu Zhichou frowned, wanting to scold her for picking up the shards.
You’ve hurt your hand!
But seeing Shi Mi’s dazed expression, she couldn’t bring herself to do it.
Instead, she summoned Lan Hui with a cold expression to clean up the mess and bring the first-aid kit.
When Shi Mi tried to recall the voice again, the memory had vanished.
Staring at Gu Zhichou’s icy profile, she reached out and tugged at the corner of her sleeve.
“Hmph.”
Gu Zhichou yanked her sleeve away, glaring at her.
“What are you staring at? Get back in bed.”
What happened? Did they have a big fight? They just resumed updates and they’re already arguing?
Am I early or late? What’s going on?
It’s normal for couples to bicker. Stop overreacting.
Gu Zhichou had kept her distance from Shi Mi earlier, allowing the bullet comments to flood back onto the screen.
Shi Mi huddled at the head of the bed, hugging her knees and gazing at Gu Zhichou with a pitiful expression.
Only after the mess on the floor had been cleaned up did Gu Zhichou sit on the edge of the bed with the first-aid kit.
Lan Hui stood outside, peering in and saying, “Young Miss, I can handle this.”
Gu Zhichou shook her head, took Shi Mi’s hand, and applied the medicine with a firm, if not gentle, touch.
The wounds weren’t deep, just numerous. A dusting of medicinal powder would suffice.
Shi Mi winced slightly, trying to pull her hand away. Her watery eyes shimmered, pleading for sympathy.
But Gu Zhichou didn’t even glance at her.
Just like before.
Shi Mi grew afraid. Her arm trembled as she gripped Gu Zhichou’s sleeve, refusing to let go.
Are you abandoning me?
She bit her lower lip until it bled, a desolate chill settling in her heart.
It was all just a dream. Sooner or later, I’d have to return to reality.
Shi Mi, why can’t you understand?
Just because she calls you “Little Mute” doesn’t mean you’re hers.
Gu Zhichou stared at Shi Mi’s pale-tipped fingers and sighed softly.
The deep furrow between her brows finally relaxed.
“Aunt Lan,” Gu Zhichou nodded to the woman outside, signaling her to take the first-aid kit and close the door.
The air fell into a deathly silence.
Shi Mi slowly released her grip and turned her face away, showing no reaction.
Gu Zhichou stared at Shi Mi’s freshly bandaged hand and said, “Don’t get this hand wet, understand?”
Shi Mi’s eyes lit up at the sound of her voice, and she nodded quickly.
“If you don’t want milk, just tell me. And someone will clean up the glass shards—I won’t blame you.”
Gu Zhichou disliked lecturing, but when she had seen Shi Mi injured earlier, her heart had nearly stopped.
The other woman’s pupils were gray-white, like the translucent petals of a mountain hydrangea after they had fallen. The sight filled Gu Zhichou with heartache.
Was she thinking about something upsetting? Or… was this a sign she was about to leave?
Gu Zhichou had always sensed these things first, so she assumed Shi Mi might feel it too.
Shi Mi shook her head frantically, reaching for Gu Zhichou’s hand only to suddenly let go. She picked up Gu Zhichou’s glass of milk and took small sips.
I don’t dislike milk.
I don’t want to leave.
Please don’t make me go.
But how could Gu Zhichou ever do that? She desperately wanted Shi Mi to stay by her side forever, safe from the cameras and the plot’s demands.
Seeing Shi Mi’s expression, Gu Zhichou suddenly chuckled. She patted Shi Mi’s head and said, “So the Little Mute actually likes milk.”
Shi Mi had drunk half the glass when she suddenly remembered it belonged to Gu Zhichou. She offered it back, blinking innocently, as if to say, I forgot.
Gu Zhichou shook her head, propping her chin with one hand and lazily lifting her eyelids.
“I’m not having trouble sleeping anymore. It doesn’t matter if I drink it or not.”
“If you drink it, we’ll go to bed soon.”
Her phone suddenly rang—an unfamiliar number.
Gu Zhichou answered and hung up, but it rang again moments later.
Annoyed, she answered, “Who is this?”
“President Gu.”
Gu Zhichou froze. Qiao Zhiyue?
She was completely stunned. Had she really never saved Qiao Zhiyue’s number?
It was still showing up as an unnamed contact.
This isn’t how the plot’s supposed to go, she thought.
Oh well, whatever.
To her surprise, Qiao Zhiyue was inviting her to go swimming together, claiming it was to make up for last time.
Gu Zhichou frowned and secretly spat out a “Pah!”
I told you to rest for a few days, and you actually went on vacation?
You’re even more carefree than me.
Just as she was about to say “Get lost,” her mouth felt like someone had clamped down on her tongue.
Instead, she heard herself say, “Understood.”
Gu Zhichou was utterly speechless. She hung up and tossed her phone aside.
Shi Mi, having finished her milk, noticed Gu Zhichou’s sour expression. Her eyes darted around before she leaned in and kissed Gu Zhichou’s cheek.
Gu Zhichou blinked, the corners of her mouth involuntarily curving upward.
She waved her hand dismissively. “It’s nothing. Just got a call from a pest. I need to brush my teeth.”
She glanced up at the bullet comments, only to find them cleared again.
I didn’t even get a chance to see what they were saying just now, she thought.
Qiao Zhiyue invited me out this time, probably up to no good again.
I need to prepare myself.
Gu Zhichou glanced at the empty milk carton and felt a strange sense of satisfaction.
After all, that was originally hers, and now Shi Mi has swallowed it all down.
A little secret pleasure.
It’s like a part of me being devoured, piece by piece, by that person.
Shi Mi noticed her mood had brightened so quickly.
My delicate beauty is so easy to please, she thought. She’s not even mad at me anymore.
Lost in thought, she drifted off again.
Gu Zhichou gently turned Shi Mi’s chin, her eyes narrowing slightly.
“Something on your mind?”
Shi Mi shook her head.
Gu Zhichou’s crimson lips curved into a smile as she brushed against Shi Mi’s soft lips, chuckling softly.
“Good. If there is, it’s mine to worry about.”
