- Chapter 31 - My Little Mute
Shi Mi lowered her gaze and smiled, leaning against Gu Zhichou’s shoulder and nodding obediently.
My thoughts are only ever of you.
Who else could I possibly think of but you?
Gu Zhichou had almost completely forgotten what had happened earlier. She turned Shi Mi’s hand over and over, examining it after applying the ointment. Her eyes were filled with concern, but she didn’t want to voice it.
Finally, she muttered, “Go wash up quickly and get some sleep.”
But as soon as Shi Mi went inside, Gu Zhichou worried she might need help and followed her in.
Shi Mi smiled faintly at her, her gaze carrying a deeper meaning.
A sharp tongue but a soft heart.
Always acting fierce, yet still so deeply concerned about me.
Gu Zhichou met her gaze, then turned away with a huff, standing to the side.
“I’m still angry,” she warned. “Don’t provoke me.”
Shi Mi, having just finished brushing her teeth, leaned back against the sink and reached out to tug at Gu Zhichou’s nightgown.
Gu Zhichou’s shoulders were already bare, held up only by two thin straps. Now, Shi Mi pulled one strap completely off.
Gu Zhichou frowned and turned to glare, but Shi Mi’s alluring eyes stole her breath away.
Her cheeks flushed slightly, and she averted her gaze, unable to meet Shi Mi’s eyes.
“What do you want? We’re just sleeping together. Nothing’s going to happen.”
Shi Mi raised an eyebrow and tugged Gu Zhichou’s dress forward, pulling her closer. She wrapped her arms around Gu Zhichou’s neck and naturally hooked her legs around her waist.
Gu Zhichou instinctively steadied Shi Mi’s legs, her face nearly burning like a barbecue grill. “I… I already said, we’re not doing anything…”
But Shi Mi’s soft, shallow breaths were already audible near her ear, and Gu Zhichou abruptly fell silent.
Milk really does help with sleep, she thought. She’s out already.
Gu Zhichou sighed in relief. Good thing she wasn’t actually going to do anything.
With that thought, Gu Zhichou rolled her eyes, feeling she had been overthinking things. What would a little mute girl know? And how could she possibly…
Gu Zhichou pressed herself tightly against Shi Mi, her peripheral vision unconsciously filled with her presence. She lowered her lashes, quietly listening to Shi Mi’s breathing.
A subtle tremor ran through Gu Zhichou’s heart, and a faint sense of loss stirred within her, unnoticed even by herself.
How could I possibly have feelings for her? she wondered. She’s just… someone only I remember, nameless and without a past.
Do you really think she sees you as someone special?
Gu Zhichou smiled bitterly.
She even suspected that Shi Mi’s actions were entirely unconscious, because that person didn’t truly possess a soul in any meaningful sense.
Gu Zhichou always deliberately avoided thinking about it, pretending that everything about Shi Mi was real.
But if she could just keep being with her like this…
Does it really matter if she’s just a shell?
Gu Zhichou held Shi Mi tighter, sighed softly, and lingered her lips against her cheek for a moment.
“As long as you remember me.”
“What does it matter how you feel about me, or what you think?”
Shi Mi couldn’t speak, so Gu Zhichou could just speak for her.
Even if Shi Mi hated her, she could pretend not to notice.
Sometimes Gu Zhichou even thought that having a friend who would never speak wasn’t such a bad thing.
But she didn’t want Shi Mi to be like that, so she fought desperately to claim her, to resist.
She wanted to give that person a legitimate identity.
Gu Zhichou often felt selfish, forcibly dragging someone from beyond the frame into her own life.
Wasn’t she… appropriating someone else’s life?
She gritted her teeth and gently laid Shi Mi on the bed.
Gu Zhichou didn’t want to admit it, but she was undeniably too lonely. The less she had, the more desperately she clung to everything in the present.
Everyone assumed she must be incredibly proud.
Her family background and social standing—what wasn’t there to envy?
Yet precisely because of this, Gu Zhichou lacked the very things ordinary people took for granted.
She gently stroked Shi Mi’s face. If her earlier actions had been a premonition of Shi Mi’s impending disappearance, then every moment now felt even more precious.
Gu Zhichou always moved to the next scene before Shi Mi, never knowing what happened to her after she left.
Suddenly, she grew curious.
What would happen if she were the one left behind this time?
Bullet comments flickered intermittently across the screen, some from the past, some from the present, and some utterly nonsensical.
Gu Zhichou suspected this was due to her altering the storyline.
The old comments hadn’t been deleted; they simply remained there.
A smile curved her lips as she tilted her head back as if gazing at the sky.
Finally, she leaned down, cupped Shi Mi’s face, and pressed a deep kiss to her lips.
See that?
This is my Little Mute.
Meanwhile, Ren Qingwen, who was flipping through a manga, felt a chill in her eyes.
The scene had vanished in an instant, replaced by a blank screen.
But she knew she hadn’t imagined it.
It seemed her dear cousin had truly gained self-awareness.
Perhaps Gu Zhichou didn’t yet realize that everything she was doing couldn’t last.
If Ren Qingwen hadn’t been watching at that moment, she would never have known about this scene.
In other words, that scene…
…existed only in their memories.
It would never be permanently visible to the public.
And thus, it couldn’t truly alter the author’s intended storyline.
The changes Gu Zhichou could make were limited to scenes involving other characters with significant roles.
The scenes of her with someone she didn’t recognize were quickly erased.
If Ren Qingwen hadn’t possessed this book, she would never have known these things.
Unlike Gu Zhichou, she believed more in fate. She had no intention of trying to change anything, as her role was relatively minor and her personal interests were barely affected. The areas where she was controlled were also fewer.
Ren Qingwen even worried that the more Gu Zhichou altered, the more dangerous it would become. If the author grew angry, they could simply write her death.
She shook her head, thinking Gu Zhichou was being too naive.
But as her cousin, she couldn’t stand idly by, even if she disagreed with her methods.
While she couldn’t directly confront the female lead, she could still throw a few obstacles in her way. After all, she was fiercely protective of her own.
Ren Qingwen shrugged, a smirk playing on her lips.
I’m truly the best cousin in the world.
She opened her phone and sent Gu Zhichou a message:
Ren Qingwen: I’ll be at the pool party too.
Gu Little Mouse: ?! It’s on already? How did you find out so fast?
Ren Qingwen: (scornful) Is there anything I don’t know?
Gu Little Mouse: (kicking and punching emojis) Do you think I’d let you come?
Ren Qingwen narrowed her eyes and smiled, typing, “I wouldn’t want to ruin your fun, would I?”
After a moment’s thought, she deleted it.
Not yet. She couldn’t let Gu Zhichou know she possessed her own autonomy. Even small changes could disrupt the plot.
Ren Qingwen didn’t know the consequences, so she wouldn’t act rashly.
Finally, she tossed aside her phone and glanced at the book on the table, her eyes narrowing slightly.
Gu Zhichou puffed out her cheeks, waiting ages for a reply that never came.
She turned her head to gaze at Shi Mi’s sleeping face, a wide grin spreading across her lips.
Reaching over, she switched off the lamp beside her and lay down, closing her eyes.
Moments later, Gu Zhichou reached out in the darkness until she gently clasped Shi Mi’s hand.
Only then did she drift off to sleep, utterly content.
In the darkness, Shi Mi slowly opened her eyes and tightened her grip on the hand in hers.
What an idiot, she thought. She can’t even tell I’m faking sleep.
