- Chapter 38 - A Path with No Room for Retreat, She Won't Take It
Gu Zhichou wrapped her arms around Shi Mi’s waist, desperately trying to defend herself.
“I didn’t! You’re imagining things.”
“If you don’t believe me, hit me a couple more times. I promise I won’t flinch.”
Shi Mi raised an eyebrow and smiled, refusing to hit her again.
She pulled the frustrated Gu Zhichou out of the room. In truth, she also had questions about the woman they had just encountered.
The woman’s gaze had seemed to recognize her, which was impossible.
Aside from Gu Zhichou, no one ever remembered Shi Mi after meeting her a second time.
It must have been a coincidence, she thought.
“Little Mute,” Gu Zhichou whispered into her ear, her voice low and sinister. “You’re spacing out too.”
Half of Shi Mi’s body went numb. She turned her head and kissed Gu Zhichou’s cheek, a gesture that carried a hint of appeasement.
Gu Zhichou snorted coldly and pinched Shi Mi’s waist sharply.
“Don’t even think about hiding anything from me. There’s nothing I don’t know.”
Shi Mi nodded immediately, tugging on Gu Zhichou’s hand and shaking it gently, her dimples flashing adorably.
Gu Zhichou stared at Shi Mi’s pale face, the heat in her ears refusing to subside.
How could my Little Mute be so obedient? she thought. And her eyes are always full of me.
But if she gains an identity in the future, will she still be like this?
Once she can speak, she might talk to many others.
And then…
Will Shi Mi still be mine alone?
Gu Zhichou’s fervent desire to give Shi Mi an identity suddenly wavered.
The more complex her feelings for Shi Mi became, the more reluctant she grew to let go.
To put it bluntly, she lacked confidence in herself.
No matter how narcissistic or proud she appeared outwardly, deep down, when it came to those she cared about, she always felt she wasn’t giving enough.
Gu Zhichou pressed her lips into a thin line, her eyes darkening.
Noticing her expression, Shi Mi gently wrote in her palm:
Zhichou
I want ice cream
Gu Zhichou’s eyes widened, almost doubting her senses.
Shi Mi had never written her name before.
This was the first time.
Could it mean that Shi Mi always called her that in her heart?
Even though it was just her name, Gu Zhichou had never felt such joy.
Cupping Shi Mi’s face, she grinned. “Write my name again, and I’ll take you for ice cream.”
For once, Shi Mi didn’t resist and actually wrote it again.
Gu Zhichou’s eyes curved into crescents as she hugged Shi Mi tightly, showering her with kisses like a child.
She dragged Shi Mi straight to the most luxurious ice cream parlor and ordered the most extravagant sundae.
Money was no object, but Gu Zhichou often felt her spending lacked purpose.
If Shi Mi wanted something, Gu Zhichou would spare no effort to give her the very best.
Outside, Ning Yiyuan wiped the sweat from his brow.
He had just received a sudden call from his young mistress, demanding he pick her up immediately.
Any delay would cost him his monthly salary.
He drove straight to the most expensive and exclusive establishment.
When Ning Yiyuan saw her with a young woman, he thought his mistress had finally made a friend.
His daily worries hadn’t been in vain after all.
Shi Mi stared at the sundae, which was nearly as tall as a person, feeling a bit dazed.
Truthfully, she didn’t really want ice cream. She had noticed Gu Zhichou’s low spirits and thought some sweetness might cheer her up.
But if she admitted it, Gu Zhichou would definitely refuse, insisting she wasn’t in a bad mood.
Knowing her friend’s stubborn nature, Shi Mi had claimed she was the one craving it.
Gu Zhichou rested her chin in her hand, her phoenix eyes crinkling with amusement.
“Little Mute, eat as much as you want.”
“If you like this place, I’ll bring you here every time we meet.”
“If not, we’ll find another shop…”
Shi Mi lowered her gaze and smiled, her fingertip gently tracing patterns in Gu Zhichou’s palm.
It tickled.
Like a tiny bug crawling across her skin.
Gu Zhichou’s heart felt like it was being devoured by her.
Gu Zhichou’s throat tightened as she leaned even closer to Shi Mi.
The soft light bathed Shi Mi, reflecting in Gu Zhichou’s pupils like inscribed characters. Each stroke and line seemed to write out Shi Mi’s radiant brilliance.
Gu Zhichou rarely took the time to truly observe her.
But her Little Mute was undeniably beautiful.
Her dark hair was loosely tied back with a leather band, two strands framing her ears. She wore Gu Zhichou’s plain short-sleeved shirt, damp sweat stains scattered across the back. Her face was bare, her dark eyes glowing brown in the light, as pure as porcelain.
Gu Zhichou thought those who failed to notice Shi Mi were utterly blind. Yet she also cherished the thought that only she could truly see her.
This person belonged entirely to Gu Zhichou.
If Shi Mi were to gain status in the future, she would inevitably acquire a family and background. She would make new friends.
Then… would she still cling to Gu Zhichou like this? Would she still think of her the moment she opened her eyes?
Gu Zhichou didn’t know.
But the thoughts in her heart grew increasingly dark.
She even felt that Shi Mi, who had once been faceless, had already revealed too much to outsiders now that her appearance was visible in the bullet comments.
The part of Shi Mi that belonged to Gu Zhichou still felt meager.
They were each other’s only constant, their sole existence. Shouldn’t they be closer, possess each other more completely?
Shi Mi took only a few bites before her teeth ached from the cold. She glanced sideways at Gu Zhichou, their eyes meeting by chance.
A faint smile curved Shi Mi’s lips.
She had only ever imagined such a scene before.
But now, the sickly beauty in her heart had brought it to life.
Shi Mi loved this kind of gaze, though she would never express it.
Nor would she ever let Gu Zhichou know how much she cherished it.
Instead, she would feign confusion and timidity, luring the pitiful little dog onto her hook.
Shi Mi’s frail, disease-ridden bones needed to be nourished by Gu Zhichou’s overwhelming love.
Otherwise, they would continue to decay and degenerate, until she descended into hysteria.
Forcing her to reveal her true nature in order to trap Gu Zhichou.
But Shi Mi would never allow herself to be cornered like that, with no room to maneuver.
She would never walk down such a path.
Shi Mi licked her lips slightly, her eyes reddening as if from the cold.
She wanted to eat, but couldn’t.
Turning to Gu Zhichou for help, she saw the man’s throat bob as he murmured almost unconsciously, “Little Mute, you’re not eating ice cream right. Let’s share, okay?”
Shi Mi hesitated, as if reluctant to share her treat.
But finally, she nodded, indicating her willingness to share.
Gu Zhichou had never cared much for ice cream.
But seeing Shi Mi’s delight, he suddenly wanted to snatch it away.
He wanted to make her weep and beg before returning what she craved.
Like an exchange.
Only by surrendering herself to Gu Zhichou could Shi Mi receive everything she desired.
Gu Zhichou’s gaze suddenly darkened as she took a mouthful of freezing ice cream.
She cupped Shi Mi’s nape and leaned down for a deep kiss.
The creamy sweetness was overwhelming.
The icy chill melted in their mouths, transforming into honey as their tongues intertwined.
Gu Zhichou’s movements grew urgent, her teeth grazing Shi Mi’s lips, drawing a hint of bl00d.
The metallic tang mingled with the intense sweetness, barely noticeable.
“Little Mute, this is how you eat ice cream,” Gu Zhichou murmured. “Understand?”
Shi Mi’s breath quickened, drowning in Gu Zhichou’s possessive gaze.
She feigned resistance, drawing forth even more forceful restraint.
Tears glistened in the corners of her eyes, like dewdrops on flower petals.
Gu Zhichou licked away every trace.
Everything Shi Mi possessed belonged to her.
