- Chapter 48 - Trouble Within
Ren Qingwen sat downstairs, chatting with a group of people, when she suddenly looked up as if sensing something.
Her gaze narrowed slightly.
She rarely carried the book with her when she went out, fearing she might lose it.
So at that moment, she was unaware of the changes that had occurred.
She only vaguely sensed that Gu Zhichou, who was slowly approaching, seemed off.
Perhaps something had happened, but she couldn’t yet discern what it was.
Ren Qingwen smiled and nodded to the others. “Please excuse me for a moment.”
She walked over to Gu Zhichou and noticed the woman was clutching a black coat in her arms, her expression downcast.
“What’s wrong?”
“She’s gone.”
“Who?”
Ren Qingwen knew exactly who Gu Zhichou meant, but she wasn’t ready to reveal that she had awakened to this reality.
She was hiding not only from Gu Zhichou but also from fate itself.
Especially after witnessing what had happened to Li Mei, Ren Qingwen was more determined than ever to remain undetected.
The lower her profile, the greater her chances of altering the plot.
For instance, Li Mei’s seemingly unintentional actions had somehow rewritten the narrative.
Gu Zhichou glanced up at her, assuming she had forgotten about the plot point after it passed.
She wasn’t surprised.
Pouting, she asked, “Where’s that guy? He called me here, but he’s not even here?”
Ren Qingwen shrugged, spreading her hands. “I don’t know. I sent someone to her room, but she wasn’t there.”
“But…”
She paused dramatically, raising Gu Zhichou’s eyebrow.
“What mischief have you been up to now?”
“How could you think so poorly of me, Gu Little Mouse?”
“Buzz off, you mosquito.” Gu Zhichou stepped back in disgust.
“Alright, alright, no more teasing.” Ren Qingwen covered her mouth, chuckling softly, her gaze drifting upward. “It’s just that your secretary, Qiao Zhiyue, has locked herself in her room.”
Gu Zhichou frowned. “Depression? Bipolar? What new internet ailment has she caught this time?”
“Or is she threatening suicide again?”
It had to be said, Gu Zhichou understood Qiao Zhiyue’s tactics all too well.
Ren Qingwen cleared her throat. “She’s definitely playing the victim, but… she’s playing the victim to your aunt.”
“So now, your mother thinks you’re going to kill her.”
Gu Zhichou’s eyes widened. She rubbed her ears, making sure she hadn’t misheard.
To be frank, this is too absurd.
Zhizhi’s mom loves her so much. How could she possibly believe that?
Upstairs, you can’t be so absolute. What if it’s true?
Even if it is, it’s just a rumor.
Gu Zhichou found it hard to believe.
No wonder she was still stuck in this scene—there was a major drama waiting for her.
Qiao Zhiyue must have truly been desperate to call Xia Zhaoxun.
But what about Li Mei?
Logically, wouldn’t it make more sense to play the victim card with someone who liked her?
Xia Zhaoxun had no personal connection to Li Mei, so why would she believe her one-sided story?
Moreover, given Li Mei’s status, she could easily make Gu Zhichou’s life miserable.
As they were talking, Gu Zhichou’s phone rang.
Ren Qingwen’s eyes turned slightly cold as she nodded, signaling her to go upstairs.
Gu Zhichou scoffed and answered the call.
“Zhizhi, where are you right now?”
“Shouldn’t you know better than I do?”
Xia Zhaoxun was silent for a moment before her voice turned icy.
“Aren’t you supposed to be good friends? Why is Zhiyue trying to kill herself? What did you do to her?”
Gu Zhichou stared at her phone, suddenly feeling a chill in her heart.
Is this really my mother?
She was taking a stranger’s words out of context and believing them without even asking what had happened to her own daughter.
Gu Zhichou put the call on speakerphone, allowing Ren Qingwen to hear every word clearly.
Her gaze lowered, Ren Qingwen suddenly recalled her childhood visits to the Gu Family to play with Gu Zhichou.
Back then, Xia Zhaoxun wasn’t the elusive figure she had become in recent years. She would often sit blankly on a bench, showing no reaction even when her daughter’s name was mentioned. She was as cold and indifferent as a block of ice.
Having lost her own mother at a young age, Ren Qingwen had always envied Gu Zhichou. At least someone cared whether she was fed and warm. Ren Qingwen couldn’t even remember her mother’s face.
According to the story, her mother had died in a sudden car accident. The driver was imprisoned, and that was the end of it.
But now, it seemed Gu Zhichou’s happiness was merely a facade. Her mother wasn’t as caring as she appeared.
Ren Qingwen led the person to Qiao Zhiyue’s door. Before they could even knock, the door swung open. In an instant, they sensed the dramatic tension in the air.
Forcing someone with suicide? This plot is so familiar.
In this day and age, do people still think suicide threats work?
I genuinely don’t understand what she’s trying to achieve.
To be honest, Gu Zhichou didn’t understand either.
The wounds covering Qiao Zhiyue’s arms looked like they had been made with a small knife. Her eyes were bloodshot, her crying pitiful yet manic.
“Zhichou, do you really not want me anymore? No one wants me…”
Gu Zhichou had already exhausted much of her strength resisting on the balcony. Now, she barely had the energy to move.
Fortunately, the author’s plot wasn’t completely brainless, and the dialogue was passable.
“Qiao Zhiyue, do you even understand what you’re saying?”
“I never wanted you in the first place, so there’s nothing to ‘not want’ now.”
After her character was fleshed out, Gu Zhichou felt much more liberated, no longer as stifled as before.
Still, she couldn’t grasp the core meaning of this scene.
Ren Qingwen stood behind her, her brow furrowed in concern. She wanted to grab her phone and call for help, but breaking free from her restraints was proving difficult. She was frantically trying to figure out how to quickly alert the police.
Qiao Zhiyue was acting like a madwoman, and Ren Qingwen feared she might use the knife to harm someone, even though she doubted she had the courage. Still, she wanted to have a backup plan.
Hearing those words, Qiao Zhiyue suddenly broke down, collapsing to her knees and sobbing uncontrollably.
“I don’t understand… why… why has everything changed?”
“Zhichou, please tell me… I’ll change…”
Xia Zhaoxun’s voice suddenly urged from the phone.
“Zhizhi, I heard you’ve been hanging out with shady people lately. You’re the eldest daughter of the Gu Group—you should know which friends to keep and which to avoid.”
“Zhiyue is a good person. You should go back to Xia Residence with her.”
“Go and comfort her now! What if something happens?”
Shady people?
Was she talking about Shi Mi?
Gu Zhichou’s face instantly darkened, becoming as sinister as a demon’s. Her trembling hands clenched into fists.
No one could belittle her Little Mute, not even her own mother. Especially not a mother who favored outsiders.
Gu Zhichou’s brow furrowed, desperate to unleash a torrent of curses, but her mouth felt sewn shut.
Qiao Zhiyue approached slowly, a chilling smile playing on her lips. The hand holding the knife seemed to reach out to embrace her.
Gu Zhichou pressed her lips together tightly and took a step back.
The phone slipped from her hand, severing Xia Zhaoxun’s call.
“Zhichou, I truly love you. Why won’t you believe me?”
