- Chapter 58 - The Bathroom Light
Shi Mi first checked Gu Zhichou’s contacts, then scrolled through her social media.
Since Gu Zhichou is monitoring everything I do, she thought, it’s only fair I take a peek at her private stuff too, right?
At worst, she’ll just scold me.
Gu Zhichou’s phone was surprisingly clean, except for the browser.
Shi Mi entered with a pale face and emerged with flushed cheeks.
Finally, she remembered that time at the hospital when Gu Zhichou seemed to have taken a photo of them together.
She opened the photo album, only to find that the earlier photo didn’t include her.
Shi Mi’s thumb traced the photo as she considered the strangeness of her world.
A sudden thought struck her:Â Could I be some kind of marginalized figure?
Or perhaps I don’t even exist at all.
But Gu Zhichou was undeniably real.
That explained why the photo Gu Zhichou took didn’t include her, while the photos Shi Mi took did include Gu Zhichou.
Though Shi Mi found it hard to believe, the evidence suggested it might be true.
Nonexistent?
She sighed. Whether I exist or not, it doesn’t matter.
Her own sickly beauty was all that mattered.
Shi Mi believed that since her very existence was uncertain, she could act boldly in many situations.
No one could control her.
She scrolled through the call history and discovered that Gu Zhichou had called someone named “Ren Qingwen” more often than anyone else.
Who is this?
Shi Mi only remembered the woman named Qiao Zhiyue.
But after searching through the contacts, she found only a few unlabeled phone numbers.
Gu Zhichou hadn’t saved Qiao Zhiyue’s number at all.
Shi Mi bit her lower lip, her heart filled with anxiety.
Could this Ren Qingwen steal my sickly beauty?
If so, how should I drive them away?
Gu Zhichou belonged to her alone. Why were there so many calls to someone else?
Shi Mi’s eyes turned icy, her fingers clenching tighter around the phone.
Then the phone rang.
The caller ID showed “Dad.”
Gu Zhichou turned off the water and called out, “Is that the phone, Little Mute? I can’t come out right now. Bring it in here.”
Shi Mi truly disliked the feeling of having her thoughts interrupted.
Suppressing her irritation, she grabbed her phone and walked to the door, switching off the bathroom light as she went.
“Did the power go out?” Gu Zhichou asked, momentarily disoriented. The door creaked open, and in the dim glow of Shi Mi’s phone, she glimpsed half of Shi Mi’s face—eerily distorted.
Her heart skipped a beat as she took the phone and pressed the call button, her hand acting before her mind could catch up.
Only when she heard the male voice on the other end did Gu Zhichou realize her father was calling.
“Zhizhi, how have you been lately?”
The voice was surprisingly young, gentle, and tinged with amusement.
Leaning against the bathroom wall, Gu Zhichou kept her gaze fixed on Shi Mi.
“Thanks to you, I haven’t starved or frozen.”
It reminded her of the night she’d witnessed his argument with Xia Zhaoxun—the same detached way he’d wiped away the bl00d and left.
Gu Ce chuckled on the other end, flipping through documents.
“Good to hear. Your mother mentioned you’ve blocked her?”
Gu Zhichou raised an eyebrow, her eyes turning colder.
“What, are you going to try to persuade me to take her back?”
“No, you’re grown now. You must have your reasons for doing what you do. I’m just reminding you, as your father, that you shouldn’t take things to extremes.”
Gu Ce’s words were calm as water, yet they carried a veiled implication she couldn’t quite grasp.
Shi Mi gently took Gu Zhichou’s hand, instinctively disliking this man, even if he was her father.
“This principle applies to many things. The Gu Group is vast and powerful; you’ll have to return to inherit it sooner or later.”
“You’ve had your fun these past few years. It’s time to get serious.”
Gu Zhichou lowered her gaze, her grip tightening on Shi Mi’s fingers. Her eyes were deep and unreadable, and it was impossible to tell what she was thinking.
Finally, she replied, “Of course. After all, I am the Gu Group’s sole heir.”
Yet as she spoke, the pride that should have been in her bones remained hidden. Instead, her expression grew even more solemn.
Gu Ce nodded in satisfaction, smiling faintly. “Zhizhi is becoming sensible. I have a meeting to attend. I’ll hang up now.”
The call ended, but Gu Zhichou remained lost in thought.
Inheritance was inevitable, but she hadn’t expected it to happen so soon.
After interacting with Gu Ce, Gu Zhichou grew increasingly convinced that the man’s relationship with Xia Zhaoxun was peculiar.
If they were married, they seemed remarkably indifferent to each other.
If they weren’t, they still offered each other perfunctory concern.
Gu Zhichou wasn’t ready to draw conclusions. She would dig deeper slowly.
Perhaps she would only truly understand after returning to headquarters and observing Gu Ce more closely.
It was clear that Gu Ce actually cared about her.
After all, the entire Gu Group would eventually belong to Gu Zhichou.
What leverage did Qiao Zhiyue hold over Xia Zhaoxun to make her so compliant?
And did Gu Ce know about it?
What puzzled Gu Zhichou even more was the man’s complete lack of surprise when she mentioned blocking Xia Zhaoxun.
It was as if… he would have done the same.
He didn’t ask for details or care about the full story, merely advising her not to be absolute.
Gu Zhichou pursed her lips and ultimately removed Xia Zhaoxun from her blacklist.
When she looked up, she found Shi Mi staring at her blankly.
She burst out laughing.
“What’s wrong? Am I too beautiful for you? Have I captivated you?”
Shi Mi had always been afraid of the dark.
But she suddenly realized how dazzling Gu Zhichou seemed in the darkness.
With her phone screen off, she could barely make out Gu Zhichou’s features.
Yet those eyes… Shi Mi could never forget them.
Gu Zhichou, still dripping wet, neither hugged nor kissed her, but simply held her hand.
Their breathing grew heavier.
Shi Mi stepped barefoot into the darkness, her other hand reaching to Gu Zhichou’s waist and abdomen.
She couldn’t resist letting it slide lower.
Gu Zhichou hadn’t expected such boldness. Caught off guard, she gasped softly as Shi Mi’s hand found its mark.
“Little Mute, stop groping me. I—”
She groaned softly as a gentle tug made her gasp, a drop of water from her bath sliding down with it.
Gu Zhichou narrowed her eyes, pulled Shi Mi into a tight embrace, and pinned her against the wall.
Shi Mi tugged open her robe. In the dim light, Gu Zhichou licked her lips, her throat bobbing slightly.
“You turned off the bathroom light, Little Mute. Do you have improper thoughts about me?”
Shi Mi smirked, her fingers lightly tracing the word yes on Gu Zhichou’s chest.
