- Chapter 8 - How Can I Keep You?
Little Mute froze, not even noticing when the book was snatched from her hand.
The unique fragrance of the library’s books mingled with Gu Zhichou’s delicate scent, blurring her vision.
The sudden lurching of her heart nearly shattered her carefully maintained facade.
She had only been mildly curious about this sickly beauty.
How had things suddenly escalated like this?
Little Mute didn’t understand why she kept appearing in different places.
But by sheer coincidence, she always found herself near Gu Zhichou.
Through countless temporal shifts, Little Mute silently watched that person.
Growing up alongside her.
Haunting every panel where Gu Zhichou appeared.
Gradually, she grew accustomed to it.
Little Mute never considered approaching Gu Zhichou, perhaps because her role dictated that she couldn’t touch someone like her.
Without a name, how could she possess emotions?
Little Mute always stored all her hopes and desires in her eyes.
In other words,
Gu Zhichou was the only thing in her world.
This had become an obsession.
A greedy desire to lock Gu Zhichou away, making her a private possession to be served and admired only by Little Mute.
But Gu Zhichou remained oblivious.
In Gu Zhichou’s eyes, there had always been only that woman named Qiao Zhiyue.
She even grieved and wept for her.
Little Mute had no idea what a “female lead” was.
She had no idea this was a comic world, and that she was just a nameless Passerby A.
All she felt was heartache for Gu Zhichou.
Her delicate beauty.
Every time she saw her, Gu Zhichou was either in trouble or in the hospital.
When… would she ever notice her?
Gu Zhichou waved her hand in front of Little Mute’s face, looking puzzled.
“Little Mute, you’re crying.”
She had only meant to tease this person, but she hadn’t expected them to look at her.
Suddenly, crystalline tears began to stream down Little Mute’s face.
When Little Mute cried, her eyes didn’t redden, and she didn’t even blink.
Not a sound escaped her lips.
It was as if she had never been allowed to speak in the first place.
Gu Zhichou felt frustrated. She had just managed to comfort her, so why was she crying again?
There had been no warning signs.
Is Zhizhi feeling sorry for her?
Â
Just comfort her when she cries. Zhizhi used to cry a lot too, right?
Â
It’s all part of the journey to win your wife!
Gu Zhichou pouted, thinking, Who does she think she is? She’s a young lady from a wealthy family!
How did she suddenly become my “wife” in their eyes?
Honestly.
But it was undeniable.
Gu Zhichou hated seeing tears, especially when Qiao Zhiyue was always crying in front of her.
Yet she didn’t feel the same aversion toward Little Mute.
Even though the girl was crying, her eyes reflected only Gu Zhichou herself.
Gu Zhichou lowered her gaze and reached out to take Little Mute’s hand.
If she could become the protagonist, if she could control the plot…
Could she then give Little Mute an identity?
Could she…
make her speak?
“Little Mute.”
Gu Zhichou pulled her hand, just as she had done before, drawing her out of the crowd.
She pulled her into her arms, lowered her head, and gently pinched Little Mute’s cheek.
“You live outside the panels, while I’m trapped in a side plot.”
“If I give you a name…”
“Can I become your protagonist?”
Gu Zhichou resented fate, resented destiny, resented everything in the world.
Her awakening was inevitable.
That soul within her could never be content as a mere supporting character in someone else’s story.
Gu Zhichou wanted to be the protagonist.
But she didn’t want to become another Qiao Zhiyue.
She wanted to be Little Mute’s protagonist.
Only then could she have the power to give her the life she deserved, to grant her lines, to give her screen time.
At least, to let her be a real person.
Little Mute heard Gu Zhichou’s voice, as rhythmic as a heartbeat, near her ear.
She didn’t understand the words, didn’t grasp their meaning.
But she knew one thing: she was about to have a name.
Though Gu Zhichou often acted frivolous, her face, soft yet alluring, possessed a captivating charm. Her slightly wavy, chestnut-brown hair framed lips as vibrant and dewy as rose petals. Her breath, hot enough to suffocate, threatened to consume even the Little Mute.
Shi Mi shook her head, and Gu Zhichou, assuming it was a refusal, huffed in annoyance. “I don’t care. I found you, and now you’re mine.”
“Time…”
Gu Zhichou noticed the slight tremor in Shi Mi’s pupils and grinned. “Shi Mi. Mi as in ‘to make up for time.’ Little Mute, this is your name. Remember it forever.”
Shi Mi’s trembling hands hung at her sides, her lips parted slightly as if she wanted to speak. She wanted to tell Gu Zhichou that her head shake wasn’t a refusal, but because, since long ago, Gu Zhichou had already been her protagonist.
Characters like them, drawn into existence in comics, likely never even had a childhood unless specifically depicted. Shi Mi didn’t know her own past, didn’t know when she had started caring for Gu Zhichou. All she knew was that from the moment she gained consciousness, her world had contained only Gu Zhichou.
They were like two hyperbolas, once perhaps very close, but the unawakened Gu Zhichou had never noticed Shi Mi at all.
She had never known.
That someone had been watching her from behind for a long time.
With just a glance from Gu Zhichou, Shi Mi’s heart would follow her anywhere.
Memories refused to let go.
And now, she couldn’t let go of the hand that held her so tightly.
Gu Zhichou seemed to particularly enjoy pinching Shi Mi’s cheek, her laughter tinged with mischief.
“Little Mute, remember this?”
In truth, she was terrified, dreading the arrival of the next scene.
The one that would forcibly drag her into another setting.
And Shi Mi, her Little Mute.
She didn’t know where she would find her again.
Gu Zhichou even wondered if Shi Mi would remember any of this.
Perhaps in the next panel, she would forget everything.
It’s okay.
Gu Zhichou pulled Shi Mi into her arms, nuzzling her.
“I’ll find you again.”
“You have to remember me.”
Shi Mi’s adorable dimples reappeared, though she couldn’t speak.
But she could smile.
She could make herself look like she desperately needed Gu Zhichou’s protection.
Shi Mi had always believed that this was the only way to capture Gu Zhichou’s attention.
Without lines or plot, her life felt like it lacked direction and purpose.
Shi Mi had always remembered Gu Zhichou, and had done so for a very, very long time.
But she had no way to tell her.
She also feared the other woman would drift away from her.
She was merely someone who had just acquired a name.
She didn’t understand her situation, nor even this world.
Gu Zhichou always smiled so casually, pulling Shi Mi along as they searched through the bookshelves.
Though she didn’t hold much hope,
she truly wanted to find that comic book.
Shi Mi tugged at her hand and wrote in her palm:
What are you looking for?
Gu Zhichou patted her head and laughed, her hands on her hips.
“I’m looking for a way to keep you here.”
What if next time, you don’t remember me?
Shi Mi’s eyes were blank, unable to grasp her meaning.
We’ll always meet again, won’t we?
It’s just… I don’t know how long I’ll have to wait.
Her memories were fragmented and incomplete, only surfacing when the plot demanded her presence.
Only then did she experience clarity.
The space around them rippled slightly. Gu Zhichou’s expression froze before the scene abruptly shifted to another setting.
The Gu Zhichou before Shi Mi vanished without a trace.
In the next instant, her world plunged into darkness.
Shi Mi’s consciousness faded away, filled with despair and helplessness.
Actually, I want to know too.
How can I keep you here?
