- Chapter 9 - Disrupting the "Plot Requirement"
This time, the daze lasted longer than usual.
Gu Zhichou found herself lying in a hospital bed again.
The scene had shifted before she could even say goodbye.
She turned over, feeling restless.
A knock came at the door, but this time it wasn’t Qiao Zhiyue.
It was Lin Ruoyun.
She’s here, she’s here! She’s volunteering to be your maid, Zhizhi, you absolutely have to refuse!
If you accept, the female lead will have another excuse to cling to you.
Gu Zhichou still had gaps in her memory, but the bullet comments gave her a rough idea of the situation.
Qiao Zhiyue and Lin Ruoyun appeared to have an ambiguous relationship on the surface, but their affection was shallow. Both were inclined to “climb the wall,” latching onto wealthy individuals.
Gu Zhichou was the perfect target—a kind-hearted woman, gentle and incapable of refusing others.
She sensed the plot’s controlling influence, but at least the female lead wasn’t present this time.
Just a supporting character.
Perhaps she could try taking down the supporting characters first.
Qiao Zhiyue’s influence was undeniable. Every move Gu Zhichou made, every word she spoke, seemed predetermined.
She couldn’t break free on her own.
Not unless Little Mute was there.
Gu Zhichou lowered her gaze. If Little Mute didn’t appear voluntarily, she had no idea where to find her.
After all, in their previous encounters, it was only by chance that Little Mute had appeared on camera, giving Gu Zhichou a chance to find her.
Gu Zhichou had said she would keep searching for her, but no one knew better than she did how difficult that would be.
In other words, she simply couldn’t do it right now.
Not to mention, Little Mute might have already forgotten what she had said earlier.
Perhaps because she was facing a supporting character, Gu Zhichou felt a bit more at ease.
At least she didn’t have to maintain a friendly smile.
She could scowl, a single glance enough to freeze Lin Ruoyun in her tracks.
But almost immediately, a gentle smile crept onto her lips, tinged with loneliness.
According to the plot, Gu Zhichou should currently be in a semi-depressed state.
After being pushed into the water and rescued, her body had grown even weaker.
Qiao Zhiyue was still with the person who had framed her, which only deepened her frustration.
Now that Lin Ruoyun had come alone, Gu Zhichou, remembering their past friendship, refrained from showing her any hostility.
However, this didn’t mean she harbored no resentment, especially given her pride as a young heiress.
Though the author had treated her, the female supporting character, with some disdain, this didn’t mean her character setting was equally harsh.
After all, the author’s true darling was the female lead. When facing other supporting characters, Gu Zhichou wouldn’t be so easily bullied.
Lin Ruoyun stood at the doorway, visibly nervous, before daring to approach.
“Wait,” Gu Zhichou called out to Ning Yiyuan, who was about to close the door.
Her eyes curved upward as she smiled faintly.
“Uncle Ning, are you letting just any Tom, D1ck, and Harry into my room now?”
This line was scripted for Gu Zhichou to mock Lin Ruoyun.
The original dialogue wasn’t this blunt, but Gu Zhichou deliberately resisted the narrative force, sharpening her words.
If the plot hadn’t restrained her, she would have been even more direct.
Ning Yiyuan had let these two in purely because Gu Zhichou always made special exceptions for Qiao Zhiyue.
Gradually, he’d tacitly accepted their visits.
In truth, he disliked it. If Gu Zhichou had heeded his repeated warnings, things wouldn’t have reached this point.
But that was just the author’s sloppy writing.
Now that Gu Zhichou had her own consciousness, she would never allow these people to disrespect her again.
Ning Yiyuan nodded slightly, turning to Lin Ruoyun.
“Miss Lin, my mistress dislikes animals. Please… leave.”
Gu Zhichou nearly burst out laughing.
For a moment, she almost thought Ning Yiyuan had awakened his own consciousness.
His words were so cutting, so reminiscent of her own style.
But that was impossible. If he had truly gained his own will, he wouldn’t have stood idly by when Qiao Zhiyue forcibly tried to hug her.
Lin Ruoyun’s eyes reddened, and with a thump, she knelt before Gu Zhichou.
Gu Zhichou’s eyes widened in disbelief.
Seriously? People still kneel at the drop of a hat in the 21st century?
“Zhichou, I didn’t push you on purpose! It was all Qiao Zhiyue’s doing!”
Why are these two always shifting the blame?
Gu Zhichou frowned, suppressing the urge to ask if Lin Ruoyun was okay. She reached for her phone to check the time.
“Stop batting your eyelashes at me. That twitching eyelid is kind of creepy.”
Lin Ruoyun’s pitiful, apologetic expression froze mid-act.
Just as I thought.
Gu Zhichou narrowed her eyes slightly.
When she wasn’t directly involved in the main plot, the restrictions on her actions weren’t as strict.
For example, the current focus was Lin Ruoyun’s desire to become her family’s maid.
Before the conversation turned to that topic, Gu Zhichou could criticize Lin Ruoyun without facing severe consequences.
After all, in the original story, she had already harbored deep resentment and unwillingness toward Lin Ruoyun.
Verbal harassment wouldn’t be considered excessive under those circumstances.
Gu Zhichou raised her hand, signaling Ning Yiyuan to leave.
But she added, “Don’t go yet.”
The gesture wasn’t her own, but the words were.
Ning Yiyuan couldn’t leave; he had to witness their conversation.
Otherwise, if he left, Gu Zhichou knew her carefully crafted lines would be misinterpreted as her genuine feelings.
Changing the plot wasn’t as simple as altering its core elements.
The author wasn’t foolish.
Knowing the plot’s fragility, she wouldn’t allow anyone to tamper with it.
That’s why Gu Zhichou needed to leverage the supporting characters.
Shi Mi had given her the inspiration.
Wasn’t it precisely because Shi Mi had nothing to lose that she could help Gu Zhichou?
Ning Yiyuan’s character was that of a butler who had watched Gu Zhichou grow up and understood the true nature of Qiao Zhiyue and Lin Ruoyun.
Despite his repeated attempts to dissuade Gu Zhichou, she had remained unmoved.
If he were here now, his character would undoubtedly intervene to stop Lin Ruoyun’s actions.
The author understood this better than Gu Zhichou.
That’s why she had written the scene to force the supporting character to withdraw—the so-called “plot necessity.”
To disrupt this necessity, Gu Zhichou had to alter the narrative from the very beginning.
Her jaw clenched, her face contorted in pain.
Her body gestured for Ning Yiyuan to leave, but her lips refused to retract the words she had just spoken.
Gu Zhichou sneered inwardly.
Come on, who’s afraid of whom?
Today, I refuse to let my butler leave. What can you do about it?
The author needed dialogue to advance the plot.
If a character refused to cooperate, she couldn’t forcibly expel them.
Otherwise, if the next panel didn’t appear, it would be considered a plot bug, drawing criticism from readers.
The bullet comments had already erupted into a chaotic debate:
If Butler Ning were here, he’d never let this guy deceive Zhizhi!
What are you talking about? When Zhizhi was tricked and harmed before, was he ever around?
Indeed, Ning Yiyuan had been present during the Qiao Zhiyue incident. But Qiao Zhiyue was the female lead, powerful enough to overcome any interference. The author could simply draw the scene in slow motion, making it impossible for anyone to stop her.
Gu Zhichou’s gaze sharpened, her arm straining against her own restraint.
Ning Yiyuan frowned, assuming she was unwell. He stopped walking.
“Miss, you’re still recovering. It’s best if I stay here to keep an eye on you.”
The temporal distortion intensified.
Yet Gu Zhichou smiled.
