How About A Divorce? - Chapter 14
Chapter 14: You Want a Divorce?
Wen Yu’s resolute “Divorce! I have to get a divorce!” suddenly shattered Lin Yanqing’s illusion.
Lin Yanqing wanted to go in and sew up that chattering little mouth of hers.
With a soft “click,” the door was pushed open. The movement was not loud and did not attract the attention of the person inside the room.
Wen Yu was sitting cross-legged on the sofa, holding her phone and watching intently.
The curtains were not drawn. The continuous moisture outside the French window made it impossible to see clearly. Only the wall lamp was on in the room, and a thin beam of light slanted on her side, outlining her with a fluffy golden edge.
She seemed to be the only light source in the room.
Lin Yanqing froze for a moment. She didn’t walk in. She just leaned against the door.
Wen Yu opened her mouth and started chattering again. “Divorce! You have to divorce, sister!”
Apparently, that shocking “divorce” from just now had nothing to do with her directly.
The tension in Lin Yanqing’s shoulders eased for a fleeting moment.
She heard a female voice from Wen Yu’s phone.
The voice had the characteristic noisy static of a livestream. “…She and I were high school classmates. After I graduated from university, I worked hard for a few years. Later, my family introduced her to me for a blind date. Both sides felt that we knew each other well and were a good match, so we got married.”
It sounded like a livestream from a relationship advice blogger.
“It’s been seven years. We’re just living together, with no emotional foundation. I found that I can’t stand this kind of marriage. It’s boring. I want a divorce,” the woman said.
Lin Yanqing frowned.
“But yesterday, when I was tidying up the study, I found an old diary she had locked in the bottom drawer,” the woman’s voice changed a little, sounding hesitant and unbelievable. “It was filled with entries about me. From the first time we met in high school to our marriage later, she said she had a crush on me for ten years. The marriage wasn’t forced by her family. It was an opportunity she fought for herself.”
Lin Yanqing couldn’t stand it anymore. She felt like the door behind her had thorns on it, which pricked her pretentious facade. She almost thought that the wife of the person opposite her was her long-lost sister.
Wen Yu was still enthusiastically asking her phone, “So, what happened? What happened?”
“Now I don’t know if I should get a divorce. My mind is a mess…”
The relationship blogger in the livestream said, “Do you like her?”
“…I don’t know, but I don’t want to continue this marriage. But she’s liked me for so many years. I feel like it would be unfair to her if I get a divorce,” the woman said.
Wen Yu was completely engrossed. Her brows were furrowed, and her face was filled with a look of disappointment. Her fingers were typing words into her phone using voice input.
“Her having a crush on you is her business. Marriage isn’t an awards ceremony for a crush competition. If you think it’s boring, then get a divorce! It’s not good for anyone if you drag it out. She likes you, but you don’t like her. Why should you spend your whole life accommodating her feelings?”
Her tone was crisp and decisive, with the self-righteousness of an outsider analyzing a topic that had nothing to do with her.
The comment was sent out, and it immediately sparked a large wave of agreement.
Lin Yanqing heard everything clearly. She was unwilling and just wanted to shut this person’s mouth.
The woman in the livestream was still talking. Wen Yu was listening with great interest. After she had just expressed a large section of her “profound insights,” she felt that she should reward her mouth with something sweet, so she got up and started to walk out.
There seemed to be some scones that the chef had baked in the kitchen in the afternoon.
But when she looked up, she met Lin Yanqing’s gaze at the doorway.
Lin Yanqing’s face was pale, and her lips were extremely pale. Her pajamas were loosely draped over her body, and her figure was as thin as paper. Her usual watery pupils were hidden in the darkness, making it impossible to see them clearly.
She looked like a female ghost.
Wen Yu was startled. “Lin Yanqing!”
Lin Yanqing’s voice was a little choked. “Hm.”
Wen Yu walked out in her slippers. “Are you crazy? Why are you standing at my door in the middle of the night instead of sleeping?”
“How long have you been standing here? Aren’t you cold?” She walked up to Lin Yanqing and reached out to touch her arm. It was icy cold. She had clearly been standing there for a long time. “Hurry back.”
Lin Yanqing didn’t answer. She just called out, “Wen Yu.”
The voice was not loud, but it sounded like broken ice hitting a smooth floor, carrying a chilly coldness.
Wen Yu felt a chill all over her body when she was called. “What?”
The two of them were standing very close. Lin Yanqing’s gaze was locked on her face. She asked, word by word, “Is being married to me interesting?”
The sudden question made Wen Yu a little confused. It took her a full three seconds to connect Lin Yanqing’s question to the livestream case she had just passionately commented on.
“Huh?” She instinctively let out a single syllable. “What are you talking about? Did you hear all that?”
“Don’t you think that case was very similar to ours?”
Wen Yu: “I don’t think so.”
The couple in that case at least saw each other favorably on their blind date. Their marriage was a rigid political one, as hard as a cardboard box that would fall apart when it got wet. There was no crush at all, but there was a lot of open dislike. The only thing that matched was the seven years of marriage.
And Wen Yu didn’t have the habit of finding inspiration from other people’s lives. Different people live different lives. She would just look at other people’s lives and not think about them too much.
Lin Yanqing still didn’t give up. “So, is being married to me interesting?”
Wen Yu gave Lin Yanqing a strange look, as if to say, “How could you ask such a stupid question?” The look also meant a firm no.
Lin Yanqing was just about to breathe a sigh of relief when she heard Wen Yu say matter-of-factly, “Of course, it’s interesting. How is it not interesting? We’re both hoping the other person dies soon, preferably the other person dies first, so we can inherit the inheritance. How interesting is that?”
Lin Yanqing: “…”
What was she expecting this mouth to say?
Wen Yu said this and casually lifted the strands of hair on the side of Lin Yanqing’s face, continuing to twist the knife. “Isn’t this the greatest joy of our marriage?”
Lin Yanqing suddenly grabbed Wen Yu’s hand. Wen Yu wasn’t afraid and waited for this woman to retort.
The expected rebuttal did not come. Lin Yanqing just looked at her quietly. A strange undercurrent was brewing in her deep, fathomless eyes.
There was no expression on her face. Neither anger nor her usual mockery. Only a blank silence.
This silence made Wen Yu feel a strange sense of guilt and unease, more so than any violent reaction.
Wen Yu was a little unnerved by the silence. “Are you mute?”
“I’m angry,” Lin Yanqing said softly.
Wen Yu: “?”
What’s she angry about? What’s she angry at?
“You married me just for that?” Lin Yanqing’s voice was as faint as a wisp of smoke, making Wen Yu feel a chill on the back of her neck.
Before Wen Yu could respond, Lin Yanqing said again, “Then I’ll die for you to see.”
With that, Lin Yanqing let go of Wen Yu’s hand and walked toward the indoor balcony.
Wen Yu didn’t react. She stood at the door, stunned. The balcony door was suddenly pulled open. The cold wind, wrapped in drizzle, hit her. Wen Yu flinched and quickly walked over, but she was still a step too late. Lin Yanqing was already leaning against the railing.
Wen Yu: “Lin Yanqing!”
Lin Yanqing turned her head and smiled. “It’s only the second floor. Look how scared you are.”
Her tone had returned to her usual playful self, but her actions were not. In Wen Yu’s memory, this person was only a little unreliable with her words, but she never made a single mistake in her actions. Not to mention, when she had a fever, she was standing in the rain in her pajamas, about to jump from the second floor.
What is she sick with?! Her brain must be fried!
Wen Yu couldn’t understand. She quickly walked over and pulled her back. “Is this necessary? It was just a joke. We’ve said it before. Why are you reacting so strongly this time?”
Lin Yanqing staggered from the pull, and her other hand grabbed the railing. She didn’t move.
Wen Yu went to pry her other hand away. Her head and face were covered in rain, and she looked disheveled, like a fluffy long-haired cat that had been soaked into a thin stick. Lin Yanqing was amused by her own imagination and couldn’t help but laugh. The next second, her arm was slapped.
“What are you laughing at?!” Wen Yu shouted.
Lin Yanqing was stunned. She saw that Wen Yu’s eyes were red. She didn’t know if it was because of the rain or something else.
She raised her hand to touch Wen Yu’s eyelids. When she lowered her head, her hair fell on Wen Yu’s face. Wen Yu dodged. She used all her strength to pull her arm, forcefully dragging her into the room.
Lin Yanqing didn’t resist this time and obediently let Wen Yu push her into the bathroom.
The hot water was turned on. Wen Yu immediately started pulling off Lin Yanqing’s clothes. Lin Yanqing was very compliant. Her wet pajamas were thrown on the floor. Wen Yu used the showerhead to spray water on Lin Yanqing’s body.
She was still cursing under her breath. “What are you sick with in the middle of the night? Hurry up and take a shower. Don’t you know what’s wrong with your body? Are you just deliberately trying to torment me? You came to my room to die. You’re doing this on purpose… Lin Yanqing, you bad woman.”
As she spoke, her voice became lower and lower. Lin Yanqing sensed something. She cupped Wen Yu’s face with both hands and was stunned.
…Wen Yu was crying.
“What are you looking at?!” Wen Yu slapped Lin Yanqing’s hand away and wiped her eyes. “You jerk. If you want to die, die somewhere far away. What’s the point of dying in front of me? How am I supposed to explain to my family? That you couldn’t handle a joke and died? Am I supposed to be a sinner for all eternity and be buried with you?”
As soon as Lin Yanqing saw Wen Yu’s tears, she regretted it. She knew she had gone too far. She wanted to explain, but she didn’t know where to start.
Because she had originally just wanted to scare Wen Yu and make her watch what she said.
She just didn’t expect to make her cry.
She thought Wen Yu would just hit her a few times and scold her, or complain to Wen Yinghuan about her unreasonable behavior. She had never expected this reaction.
“Tell me, why are you so angry?!” Wen Yu hung the showerhead on the wall and crossed her arms, staring at Lin Yanqing. “You wouldn’t have reacted like this before. And you asked me if our marriage was interesting. You and I both know the reason for our marriage. We can’t even talk about these things.”
Wen Yu slowly calmed down. She felt that she had a clue and sneered. “Lin Yanqing, do you think our marriage isn’t interesting and you want a divorce? Is this whole scene a way to force me, right?”
Lin Yanqing was stunned. The baseless anger and helplessness she had felt from hearing her “die or not die” comments, and the heartache of seeing Wen Yu cry, were strangely diluted by the absurdity of this rhetorical question.
She almost didn’t know whether to laugh or cry.
Lin Yanqing pinched Wen Yu’s face. “Young Miss Wen, what kind of dream are you having? If we were to get a divorce, the stock rights transfers, asset divisions, and family cooperation projects would all be enough to turn the board of directors upside down. Do you think I have nothing better to do, or that I’m tired of living and looking for this kind of trouble?”
Wen Yu subconsciously seized on one point to retort. “Weren’t you just tired of living and about to jump off the balcony?”
“I was just messing with you.”
Wen Yu kicked Lin Yanqing, half-believing her and half-doubting her.
She still remembered that Lin Yanqing had someone else in her heart. Who knows if this whole scene was a way to test her bottom line, so she could get a divorce later and let the other person take her place.
“Let go. I want to get out,” Wen Yu turned her head to avoid Lin Yanqing’s hand and turned to open the bathroom door.
Lin Yanqing pulled her back.
“You’re all wet. Take a shower first.”
“I don’t want to shower with you!”
“You do.”
As soon as Lin Yanqing’s hand touched Wen Yu’s waist, Wen Yu’s body went half-limp, but the other half was still as hard to handle as a pig for Chinese New Year. Lin Yanqing had to put in some effort to pull off Wen Yu’s clothes.
Wen Yu was out of breath and leaning in Lin Yanqing’s arms. She opened her mouth and bit Lin Yanqing’s shoulder. Lin Yanqing said something, but she didn’t hear it. The sound of the water was too loud, so she turned her head and asked, “Are you cursing me?”
Lin Yanqing pinched her waist, making Wen Yu twist like a fish.
Lin Yanqing sighed. “…When will you ever learn to be mindful?”
Wen Yu: “I’ll be mindful of your head.”
Lin Yanqing: “…”
Never mind. I’m talking to a wall.
When the two of them finished getting ready and came out, they found that the balcony door was not closed. A large part of the bed was soaked from the rain. Wen Yu glared at Lin Yanqing. Lin Yanqing gave a light cough and went to find the butler to clean it up.
That night, the two of them slept in the same bed again, but this time, Wen Yu refused to let Lin Yanqing touch her. She used pillows to create a clear border between them.
I really got on her nerves, Lin Yanqing thought.
