How About A Divorce? - Chapter 38
Chapter 38: The Argument [VIP]
Wen Yu’s chest felt like it was stuffed with a wet cotton ball, heavy and suffocating.
Her mind was racing at this moment.
If every step Lin Yanqing took was part of a plan, then her current predicament must also be within her calculations. She must have a solution, or perhaps she wasn’t short on money at all, lacking nothing but the right timing.
If she hadn’t gone to pick her up, Lin Yanqing would have gotten into another car and gone to a secluded place, disappearing for a while, and only reappearing when everything had settled down.
It was that one sugar baby agreement that disrupted Lin Yanqing’s plans, bringing her out into the public eye.
And it also made Wen Yu a laughingstock.
She clenched the USB drive in her hand.
She quickened her pace. As she turned a corner, Wen Yu saw a group of people standing outside her room.
Lin Yanqing was leaning against the doorframe, her body slightly tilted back. Wang Tian stood to one side, holding two glasses of red wine.
“CEO Lin… no, Yanqing,” Wang Tian enthusiastically invited. “It’s so boring being alone. My private hot spring is bigger, and the water is hotter. Care to join?”
Someone nearby saw Wen Yu standing not far away. The look of a spectator on their face instantly disappeared, and they coughed lightly. “Tian, Miss Wen is back…”
Wang Tian was interrupted. She frowned and glanced at Wen Yu, who was a few steps away. She might have had some wine, making her bolder, as she didn’t hold back much. “So what if she’s back? We’re divorced, aren’t we? She can’t stop Yanqing from talking to me.”
Lin Yanqing said in a calm voice, dropping a bombshell. “She can. She’s my sugar mommy.”
Everyone was stunned by that statement.
“My sugar mommy won’t let me talk to you. Miss Wang, please leave,” Lin Yanqing added.
In the span of two sentences, Wen Yu was already standing next to Lin Yanqing.
But Wang Tian became even more excited. “Sugar mommy?”
She grabbed Lin Yanqing’s arm, her movements lacking the respect she had been barely maintaining earlier, as if Lin Yanqing had become an object, a piece of property with a stamp on it. Wang Tian asked, “How much? How long? Why don’t you consider me? I have a lot of money too, and I won’t control you. I just think you’re pretty.”
Lin Yanqing lowered her eyes to look at the hand on her arm.
Wang Tian didn’t let go.
Her meaning was obvious.
Since Lin Yanqing could be stamped by someone else, she could be changed hands. Something with no price is valuable, with no bottom line, so you have to protect and respect it, lest you offend it. But Lin Yanqing was now clearly priced. No matter how expensive she was, it wasn’t too expensive.
She’s within reach.
Wang Tian’s tone was full of disregard. “I’ll cover the breach of contract fee too. How much? One million? Two million?”
Wen Yu saw all of this and then thought that if it weren’t for her, Lin Yanqing wouldn’t have to endure this humiliation.
She pinched the bridge of her nose and let out a breath. “Wang Tian, my person is not for you to price.”
“As for what you can offer,” Wen Yu’s hand wrapped around Lin Yanqing’s waist. With her other hand, she opened the door, pushed Lin Yanqing inside, and then said, “It’s all trash. It won’t catch her eye.”
Wang Tian: “Second Miss Wen—!”
“Shut up,” Wen Yu’s voice was frigid. “Get lost.”
With that, she took a step back and slammed the door shut, isolating all the prying eyes and noise from outside.
Inside the room, Lin Yanqing habitually moved closer, just as she had countless times these past few days. She wrapped her arms around Wen Yu. “Why are you so angry?”
Wen Yu didn’t say a word.
Lin Yanqing: “She’s just an upstart. Don’t get angry over her.”
Wen Yu broke free from Lin Yanqing’s embrace. “I’m not angry because of her.”
“Then what is it?”
Wen Yu threw the USB drive onto the table. It had been held for so long that it was still warm. When Lin Yanqing picked it up, she felt sticky from the heat and didn’t like it.
She asked, “What is this?”
“Surveillance footage,” Wen Yu said, her voice dry and tense, like a taut bowstring.
Lin Yanqing was puzzled. “What footage?”
As she asked, Lin Yanqing took out the adapter from her bag, intending to take a look.
Wen Yu twitched her lips. “You don’t need to look. You know what it is.”
Lin Yanqing’s hand, holding the cable, paused. After a while, her eyelids drooped.
She coiled the data cable with her hand, and the USB drive spun between her fingers.
She knew what was on the USB drive.
Lin Yanqing didn’t ask Wen Yu how she got it. She just stood there in silence, as if just touching this small USB drive could replay the scene from that day. She was mentally checking to see what Wen Yu knew.
“Lin Yanqing, don’t even think about lying to me,” Wen Yu said, sitting on the sofa, her arm propped up as she watched the other person.
Lin Yanqing’s movements stopped.
Neither of them spoke for a long time.
The silence was suffocating. Wen Yu covered her mouth and nose, letting the air rush through her fingers into her lungs. The strong rise and fall of her chest tried to quell the frustration inside.
“Talk,” Wen Yu broke the stillness.
Lin Yanqing took a step forward. “I’m sorry. I didn’t make things clear to you from the beginning.”
“Stop,” Wen Yu closed her eyes. “Don’t move. Don’t come near me.”
“So?”
The fact was that Wen Yu had indeed been kept in the dark and had done something foolish by trying to be a sugar mommy.
“Lin Yanqing, you knew from the start that Qian Tu was a setup. You played along, walked right into it, and all the suffering you endured was what you deserved. You should have been locked up, not eating or sleeping well. The more miserable you were, the more Chen Liangsheng and the others would think they succeeded, and the more room your mom would have to work, right?” Wen Yu’s tone was calm as she spoke each word.
“Even if I hadn’t come to get you, you would have had another way out, right? Let me think…” Wen Yu feigned warmth. “Was it Zhang Cheng?”
“Yes.”
“She was waiting to pick you up. You would have laid low for a while, and when the bomb you planted for Chen Liangsheng exploded, it would have been your time to take the stage.” Wen Yu clapped her hands. “And I was like a fool. I ran to pick you up, even drew up an agreement, looking like a joke. I thought I was your savior, but it turns out I’m just a clown.”
Lin Yanqing: “…Wen Wen, I never thought that.”
“You didn’t think it, but you watched, didn’t you?” Wen Yu smiled. “Watched me perform a one-woman show of the hero saving the beauty. Was it fun?”
“Wen Wen…”
“Don’t call me that,” Wen Yu clicked her tongue and scoffed at herself. “The divorce was also part of your plan, wasn’t it? That day you heard me say we were divorced, you pretended to be so sad. I thought you couldn’t bear to leave me. But it turns out I was just a part of the plan too.”
Lin Yanqing stepped forward, knelt on the floor, and took Wen Yu’s hand. “I never intended to use you.”
Wen Yu looked at her. In the end, she didn’t push her away and let out a sigh. “Talk.”
Lin Yanqing knew this was the chance Wen Yu was giving her. Her eyes were heavy as she looked at Wen Yu. “At the beginning of the plan, your sister wanted me to divorce you, but I didn’t agree. Before… we didn’t communicate everything. I thought as long as we weren’t divorced, the impact on you wouldn’t be too big, so I didn’t tell you.”
This was the truth.
Their relationship wasn’t completely transparent. As long as it wasn’t a major issue, it didn’t matter if they talked about it or not.
Lin Yanqing hadn’t expected Wen Rong to do it for her anyway.
“What about later?” Wen Yu nodded. “After you got out, before we signed the agreement, why didn’t you say anything? Was it so interesting to watch me be a fool?”
“No,” Lin Yanqing’s voice became a little more urgent. “I was happy you came to pick me up, and…”
Her voice lowered. “And… you said you wanted to be my sugar mommy.”
“I’ve told you before, Wen Wen, I like you.”
Wen Yu remained silent.
“If I had told you the truth then, would you still have let me sign that agreement? Would you still have let me stay by your side?”
Both of them knew the answer. “You wouldn’t.”
“I don’t want to leave you, Wen Yu. I don’t want a divorce. I can’t bear to be without you.”
These words landed in Wen Yu’s ears, but they were tinged with a strange displacement. She couldn’t tell what was real and what was fake. The only anchor was that love letter that didn’t belong to her.
All the words were washed away by that memory, leaving only floating sounds, not making a complete sentence.
So her expression didn’t change at all. She just looked at Lin Yanqing coldly. “Why are you acting so affectionate?”
Lin Yanqing stiffened. All the words that were about to come out were stuck in her throat.
Wen Yu pulled her hand away and gave her a summary. “You don’t need to say anything more. Everything is clear now. The agreement is void.”
She stood up, about to walk away. “That kind of agreement has no legal effect anyway. I was thinking of giving you a reason to stay and rest. If you wanted to leave, the agreement couldn’t stop you. But it turns out I was just being a fool, wasting my time. You can go…”
The unfinished words came to a halt. Wen Yu was pulled onto the sofa by a force. Lin Yanqing was on top of her, her eyes bloodshot.
Wen Yu was stunned.
“Being a fool? Who’s the one being a fool here?” It was rare for Lin Yanqing to lose control of her emotions. She looked down at Wen Yu, and every word she spoke was scorching hot, hitting Wen Yu’s face. “Wen Yu, you don’t believe what I say, and you don’t believe my heart. So what do you believe?”
Wen Yu frowned. “Lin Yanqing, what are you doing?”
“Wen Yu, what is your mindset to question me about all of this? What kind of answer are you looking for from me? Once I’ve explained everything, you’ll have a reason to get rid of me completely?”
“If you hate me so much, why were you so worried about me, not eating or sleeping well, giving me food and a place to stay, and standing up for me?” Lin Yanqing demanded. “What are you contradicting yourself about?!”
“I just pity you!” Wen Yu shouted.
“There are so many people in the world more miserable than me. Why do you only pity me?” Lin Yanqing pressed. “You say I’m faking affection? What about you? Are you faking it too? Wen Yu, can you see your own heart?!”
“Shut up!” Wen Yu yelled, trying to break free from Lin Yanqing’s hold. Her heart was pounding in her chest, almost shattering her ribs, breaking through the old scars.
But Lin Yanqing didn’t budge. Her gaze held her tightly. “Yes! Now you know the truth! So what now? The agreement is void? We go our separate ways and never see each other again? Wen Yu, can you do that?”
She lowered her head, her hot breath on Wen Yu’s ear. She said each word slowly. “You can’t bear to. You can’t break the habit. Wen Yu, you like me. You love me.”
“Bullshit!” Wen Yu pushed her away fiercely. All her rationality was blanked out by these words, causing her to speak without thinking. “I just pity you! Like you? Love you? Stop being so conceited, Lin Yanqing. We’ve been together for so long. Have you ever heard me say I like you?! Even when we made love, I never said I liked you, let alone loved you!”
Wen Yu was breathing heavily. She pointed to the door, every word icy. “Get out! I never want to see you again!”
A deadly silence suddenly fell over the room.
Lin Yanqing propped herself up on the sofa, looking at Wen Yu deeply. Wen Yu avoided her gaze, not moving.
A few seconds later, Lin Yanqing quietly bent down, picked up her phone that had fallen to the floor, and walked towards the door.
Wen Yu finally looked up at her back.
After just one glance, she looked away when Lin Yanqing’s footsteps stopped.
Lin Yanqing’s back was to her. “…I’m sorry. I said the wrong thing. Don’t be angry. It’s not good for your heart… I’ll have a doctor check on you later, just in case.”
Then, a faint “click” came from the lock.
The door was opened and then gently closed.
Lin Yanqing didn’t look back.
Wen Yu was the only one left in the room. She leaned against the sofa, her body trembling slightly from the sudden burst of emotion.
The faint, familiar scent of Lin Yanqing’s body wash seemed to linger in the air.
And that sentence—”You like me. You love me.”
Wen Yu raised her hand and rubbed her eyes hard. They were dry and aching. Not a single tear fell. It had been holding back for an entire winter.
