How About A Divorce? - Chapter 45
Chapter 45: Sadness [VIP]
The weather was getting colder, and Lin Yanqing started going out from time to time. Sometimes it was for half a day, and sometimes it was for a whole day. Even though she wasn’t officially employed, she was just as busy.
Sometimes Wen Yu would go out with her, and other times she would just stay at home and wait for her to come back. If Lin Yanqing came back late, she would intentionally fall asleep on the sofa so Lin Yanqing would have to carry her back to the room.
But tonight, Lin Yanqing didn’t come back.
Wen Yu woke up shivering on the sofa. She took out her phone and saw that Lin Yanqing had messaged her last night, telling her that she would stay out and that Wen Yu should go to bed early.
She did go to bed early, and she also woke up with a lot of anger.
There was a sound at the door. Wen Yu immediately scurried upstairs and locked the bedroom door. Lin Yanqing, who had just entered, only managed to see a flash of hair.
Lin Yanqing: “Wen Wen?”
Wen Yu ignored her.
Lin Yanqing went upstairs. The door wouldn’t open. She went back to the study to get the key, but the key was gone—it was probably confiscated by Wen Yu before. Lin Yanqing had no choice but to knock on the door. “Wen Wen, open the door.”
Wen Yu’s voice was muffled by the door, but her anger was still palpable. “Go stay outside!”
Lin Yanqing: “I’m sorry. Next time, I’ll come back early.”
“Don’t say sorry. It makes me seem unreasonable,” Wen Yu said in a sarcastic tone.
Lin Yanqing knocked again. “Are you hungry? What do you want to eat?”
“The sight of you is enough to fill me up.”
“You haven’t even seen me yet.”
Wen Yu: “…”
There was a muffled thud. It sounded like a pillow had hit the door.
Lin Yanqing fell silent.
Wen Yu waited for about ten minutes. Her patience ran out, and the anger in her heart burned hotter and hotter.
Bastard. Would it kill you to coax me a little more?
With that thought, Wen Yu became even angrier. She was angry with herself for being so weak that she would be fine with just a few more words of coaxing.
There was a noise at the door again. Wen Yu’s anger immediately subsided. She forced herself not to smile. “Don’t bother. You—”
Before she could finish, the door was pushed open. Lin Yanqing was standing in the doorway with a bent piece of wire in her hand.
Wen Yu: “…”
Lin Yanqing twirled the wire in her hand. “I just looked up a tutorial. It’s pretty useful.”
Wen Yu: “…”
Lin Yanqing’s unexpected move completely extinguished her anger. Wen Yu wanted to laugh, but she still kept a straight face.
Lin Yanqing walked over and pinched Wen Yu’s face. “Just laugh. Even a nail can’t hold back the corners of your mouth.”
“Laugh at your head,” Wen Yu slapped her hand away. “Why did you even come back? Is this house a hotel for you?”
“You’re saying things out of anger again,” Lin Yanqing took her hand and walked her outside. “What do you want to eat?”
“Wontons,” Wen Yu sneered. “I’m not saying it out of anger. You’ve been gone for two or three days. You’re even busier than me.”
“Is shepherd’s purse filling okay?” Lin Yanqing took out the wontons from the bottom layer of the refrigerator and started boiling water. “Miss Wen, ninety percent of the people in this world are busier than you.”
Wen Yu: “…”
Wen Yu said in a grumpy voice, “I’m not eating what you cooked.”
Lin Yanqing said calmly, “The dog cooked it.”
Wen Yu: “…”
This person is getting more and more shameless.
Wen Yu ended up eating the wontons anyway. After she finished, she still wanted to give her the cold shoulder, but Lin Yanqing carried her and pinned her down on the bed.
“What are you doing in broad daylight?” Wen Yu pushed her away. “The curtains aren’t even closed.”
Lin Yanqing got up to close the curtains, then turned around and started taking off her clothes.
Wen Yu stared at her and ended up taking off her clothes too, while scolding her. “Lin Yanqing, you’re a bastard.”
The bastard finished taking off her clothes, hugged her, and got under the covers. When Wen Yu tried to reach for her, she grabbed her wrist.
Lin Yanqing smiled. “What are you thinking about?”
Wen Yu: “?”
“Just taking a nap,” Lin Yanqing said. “Miss Wen, please be respectful.”
Wen Yu: “…”
Wen Yu turned over and showed her the back of her head, condemning Lin Yanqing’s misleading behavior with her actions. She cursed, “You did that on purpose!”
Lin Yanqing didn’t deny it. She just laughed, sounding extremely pleased.
Wen Yu poked her with an elbow.
Lin Yanqing stopped laughing. She hugged her and her breathing became heavy. “Stay with me and sleep for a bit. I’m so tired.”
“Where did you sleep last night?”
“I didn’t sleep. I was at Lin Jiao’s house,” Lin Yanqing buried her head in Wen Yu’s hair. “I was checking documents all night.”
“Aren’t you afraid of sudden death?” Wen Yu frowned.
“I am,” Lin Yanqing said. “That’s why I need to catch up on sleep. If I die, a certain heartless person would be very sad.”
“Who are you calling heartless?” Wen Yu said. “You’re the heartless one.”
“Would you be sad?” Lin Yanqing asked on purpose.
She loved hearing Wen Yu say how much she cared about her.
Wen Yu warned, “Lin Yanqing.”
Lin Yanqing apologized quickly. “My fault.”
Wen Yu was silent. After a while, she seemed to give in and said awkwardly, “I really would be sad, so you have to be okay.”
Lin Yanqing chuckled twice. Her laughter sounded as if it were underwater, and her breathing gradually slowed. Wen Yu turned over in her arms. After confirming that Lin Yanqing was asleep, she got up and left the room.
Wen Yu called Wen Rong. As soon as the call connected, she said, “Sister.”
When Wen Rong heard those three words, she knew what was coming. “Don’t bother with the pleasantries. Just get to the point.”
“I want to ask you a favor.”
“Why don’t you ask Lin Yanqing?”
Wen Yu: “I don’t want to put pressure on her.”
“So you’re putting the pressure on me?” Wen Rong’s voice was amused. “Forgetting your sister for a lover.”
“Oh, just tell me already. Lin Yanqing is about to wake up.”
“I’m just a tool,” Wen Rong said with her usual efficient manner. “Let’s talk in person. Mom wants to see Xiao Lin. Let’s just handle everything at once.”
“Why does she want to see Lin Yanqing?”
“She probably misses her. After all, Ms. Wen treated Lin Yanqing like her own daughter. If I hadn’t stopped her a while ago, she would have gone to fight Lin Jiao.”
“…She’s still as strong as ever.”
“She’s in her fifties, the perfect age to be fighting for things.”
Fighting indeed.
Wen Rong: “Tomorrow, since it’s the weekend. Come home for a meal.”
Wen Yu agreed. She went back to the room, crawled back into the blanket, hugged Lin Yanqing, and went back to sleep.
When they woke up, Wen Yu told Lin Yanqing about it. Lin Yanqing said as she put on her clothes, “Tomorrow, huh…”
“Yes. You’re coming back with me.”
Lin Yanqing finished getting dressed. She knelt on the bed and kissed Wen Yu’s face. “Wen Wen, I don’t want to go.”
Wen Yu was surprised by the answer and was stunned for a moment.
“I don’t want to make an excuse like I’m busy tomorrow or I have work, Wen Wen,” Lin Yanqing said slowly, her lips pursed. “Although I do have something to do tomorrow… the main reason is that I don’t want to see Auntie Wen.”
Wen Yu didn’t say anything.
Lin Yanqing was thinking about how to phrase her words without sounding ungrateful when Wen Yu suddenly said, “If my mom heard you call her ‘Auntie Wen,’ her heart would shatter.”
Lin Yanqing’s lips twitched.
“If you don’t want to go, then don’t go,” Wen Yu said, smiling and pinching Lin Yanqing’s face. “You don’t have to think of an excuse.”
“Wen Wen…”
“I know you… In school, when you didn’t do well on a test, your mom would act like that,” Wen Yu gestured. “She would be so good at emotional manipulation. I got annoyed just listening to it.”
Wen Yu still remembered how Lin Yanqing would stand in front of Lin Jiao, who wasn’t speaking harshly, but every word she said was cutting. Things like, “Let’s stop your horseback riding class for the weekend. You should review with your tutor and make sure you don’t make the same mistake again.” “Yanqing, you can’t make mistakes. You’re not living for yourself.” “I can’t accept this attitude from you, Lin Yanqing. You’re the best among your peers, but you can’t be arrogant.” These words were meant to melt Lin Yanqing like wax and mold her into what Lin Jiao wanted her to be.
Wen Yu had seen it once. She heard everything and felt like she had swallowed a fly. She pulled Lin Yanqing behind her. “Auntie, do you have to set a standard for every single breath Lin Yanqing takes?”
Lin Jiao knew Wen Yu. She saw their hands clasped together and didn’t say anything.
Wen Yu didn’t understand the look in her eyes at the time. She was only focused on pulling Lin Yanqing away. Now that she thought about it, Lin Jiao probably already had the idea of an arranged marriage back then.
What a woman who values benefits above all else.
It was already a miracle that a child raised by such a person didn’t turn out to be completely twisted. However, the tension in her bones couldn’t be changed, and Wen Yu understood that. Facing Wen Yinghuan, who was the same type of person as Lin Jiao, Lin Yanqing would unconsciously see herself as someone being scrutinized.
When they were married, they could maintain a close relationship as daughter-in-law and mother-in-law. Now that they were divorced and dating again, with Lin Yanqing facing so many lawsuits, it would be difficult for her to find her place.
It was awkward.
For Lin Yanqing, the only solution was to return to her original position and stand even higher.
Wen Yu: “Then I’ll go back by myself. You can be busy with your stuff.”
“I’ll pick you up tonight.”
“Okay, driver Lin,” Wen Yu held out her hand and made a zero. “But you don’t get any fare.”
“You’re my personal driver. You don’t get paid,” Lin Yanqing leaned in. “Just a kiss will do.”
Wen Yu: “Then I’ll be losing out.”
Lin Yanqing cupped Wen Yu’s face and successfully got her fare.
…
“Xiao Lin didn’t come?” Wen Rong looked at the alone Wen Yu, not bothering to hide her disappointment.
“You know her situation,” Wen Yu said. “She’s not comfortable, and I’m not going to force her.”
“Oh, you’re so considerate now,” Wen Yinghuan said, surprised.
“What can I say? I’m just that thoughtful.”
Wen Yinghuan patted Wen Yu’s forehead. “You’re a narcissist.”
“I just have the right to be,” Wen Yu said proudly.
Wen Yinghuan smiled and stopped messing with her. She walked to the tea table and sat down, looking at a cup of tea, just like any other person her age, reminiscing about the past. “Time flies.”
“And you’ve gotten richer,” Wen Yu gave her a thumbs-up.
Wen Yinghuan laughed.
“You always know how to change the subject,” Wen Yinghuan gestured. “Sit down. Let me look at you.”
Wen Yu sat down obediently. “Look at how wonderful your daughter is.”
“Stop that,” Wen Yinghuan said, drinking her tea. “How many years has it been? Ten or eleven?”
“Ten years for what?”
“Your surgery.”
“Why are you suddenly talking about this?” Wen Yu subconsciously touched her chest. “I think it’s been eleven years.”
“You’ve grown up so much.”
Wen Yu knew Wen Yinghuan was about to start her usual sermon.
After high school graduation, Wen Yu went abroad for surgery. Wen Rong was in the middle of a review and couldn’t accompany her. Wen Yinghuan was busy with company affairs and could only have a trusted subordinate go with her to handle everything.
At the time, there was an issue with the surgery, and they were about to issue a critical condition notice. The subordinate quickly reported it to Wen Yinghuan, who immediately dropped everything and flew to Wen Yu’s side. Fortunately, the surgery was a success, and Wen Yu didn’t cross the bridge of no return. She was woken up by her mom’s crying, and the first thing she said was, “Mom, are you crying for my soul?”
Ms. Wen was so angry that she slapped the hospital bed.
After Wen Yu stabilized, a lot of work piled up in the country. Wen Yu sent Wen Yinghuan back. Wen Yinghuan felt guilty and heartbroken. Looking back, she always felt that she owed her daughter a lot, so she would try to make it up to her in many ways and bring it up every year.
At first, Wen Yu would comfort her, but later, Wen Yu would just pout and ask Wen Yinghuan for money, which would earn her a slap from Ms. Wen.
This time was no exception. Just as Wen Yu was about to reach out for money, she heard Wen Yinghuan say, “It’s interesting. You’ve grown up so much, and so has Xiao Lin. I remember Xiao Lin wasn’t so quiet back then.”
Wen Yu: “?”
Huh? Did the story change?
“What does this have to do with Lin Yanqing?”
Wen Yinghuan was confused. “Did I not tell you?”
“You’re getting old and confused,” Wen Yu said. “You should eat some fish oil.”
Wen Yinghuan wanted to hit her daughter’s forehead.
That mouth is a real mood killer.
She still feels guilty, but she gets so annoyed when her daughter talks.
Wen Yu, being annoying, opened her mouth again. “So what does it have to do with Lin Yanqing?”
“Hmph,” Wen Yinghuan grunted. “The day I flew back, there was a big storm. It rained for a week, and I didn’t go home. When I finally finished my work and came back, I saw Xiao Lin standing at our doorstep, soaking wet.”
When she saw Wen Yinghuan, she didn’t say a word. She looked exhausted and fell into Wen Yinghuan’s arms.
