How Can a Construction Foreman Be the Public Girlfriend of a Top Celebrity? - Chapter 35
Chapter 35
“Of course, of course. Xiao Xuan, your uncle’s entertainment company is having some trouble. If you need anything, come to Mom, okay?” said Zheng Ling’s mother.
Shu Xuan exchanged a glance with Zheng Ling before replying, “Okay, thank you, Mom.”
“We’re family—what are you thanking me for?” Zheng Mama chatted with them for a while longer before finally hanging up.
After finishing her food, Shu Xuan leaned back while Zheng Ling went to wash the dishes.
Wiping her hands dry, Zheng Ling poured a glass of water and said, “Teacher Shu, honestly, I was just fighting with myself… but I’ve figured things out now.”
After hearing her mother’s words earlier, a lot had suddenly become clear. She and Shu Xuan were brought together by this system, and beyond romantic love, they could also develop other kinds of connection.
Shu Xuan sat on the sofa, her gaze clear and calm. “Boss Zheng, thank you.”
“Thank me for what?” Zheng Ling didn’t quite understand.
Shu Xuan got up and went back to her bedroom. She actually had a vague idea of Zheng Ling’s feelings, but Zheng Ling had always respected her. So did Zheng Mama. As for romantic relationships, Shu Xuan had always approached them with caution. Not just because she was a public figure, but because she never really believed anyone could love her for a lifetime. It felt safer to love herself.
Zheng Ling stared at Shu Xuan’s retreating figure—this “Teacher Shu” was always hard to read.
The next day.
Zheng Ling went to the police station early in the morning. The man who had caused the trouble was now willing to pay for Huang Tian’s father’s medical bills and hoped they could settle privately.
As Zheng Ling entered, the man quickly stood up to greet her.
Yang Lei thought he was going to hit her and immediately stepped in front of Zheng Ling protectively.
“Boss Zheng, it’s a misunderstanding! Really!” The man pushed Yang Lei’s arm aside. “I thought it through—what we’re doing in construction is also contributing to our hometown’s development.”
“Do you really think that?” Zheng Ling eyed him sideways.
The man hunched over and nodded repeatedly. “Yes, yes, yes. My kid’s illness—turns out it wasn’t caused by the dust. He caught COVID.”
“My wife scolded me too. Said it was all my fault for stirring up trouble.” As he spoke, he even slapped himself twice.
Zheng Ling knew exactly why he wanted to settle. He wasn’t truly remorseful—he was just afraid of being held accountable.
“You’ll need to say that to the victim. I don’t have the final say,” Zheng Ling replied. She was planning to visit Huang Tian’s dad later—he was still in the hospital.
Yang Lei pulled Zheng Ling aside. “Ling-jie, Huang Tian’s dad said we can handle everything on his behalf.”
He lowered his voice, “Besides, he’s doing fine now.”
“Alright.” Zheng Ling turned around and said to the man, “Since you also have a child, we’ll drop the charges. But you have to help oversee our construction site for free, and cover all of the victim’s medical expenses and lost wages.”
If this had been before, Zheng Ling would’ve definitely made him pay dearly. But now she knew better—it’s important to leave room for people. If the local villagers heard the construction site was unfriendly to the native residents, it would affect future work. Besides, this was a joint project with the Nancheng government.
The man was so grateful he nearly knelt down. He signed the agreement immediately, and Zheng Ling did the same after he transferred the money.
Huang Tian’s father was mostly fine. He’d just taken a hard fall when he was pushed, and after two days in the hospital, he was discharged.
With that issue finally resolved, Zheng Ling turned her attention to A-Liao, who was still in prison. She prepared to withdraw 20,000 yuan in cash to bring with her for the visit.
After booking the visit, she went to the Nancheng Women’s Prison.
The prison was on the outskirts of the city, surrounded by nothing but bleak walls—no buildings, no people in sight.
When Zheng Ling saw A-Liao, she noticed she had shaved her head short. A-Liao was clearly thrilled to see her.
“A-Liao, are you doing okay in there?” Zheng Ling tried to keep her tone light, but the words still came out overly formal.
“I’m doing alright!” A-Liao grinned goofily. “You know me—I’ve always been competitive. Even doing labor reform in prison, I’m determined to be number one.”
Seeing her cheerful expression, Zheng Ling could tell she was handling things well. “I brought you some money—split it with the sisters you came in with. I’ll check when I can visit you next.”
“Aiyo, I haven’t even spent the money you gave me last time. I’m dieting, so I don’t eat all those instant noodles and snacks.” A-Liao crossed her legs. “So… how are things with you and that Teacher Shu? Have you slept together yet?”
