How Can a Construction Foreman Be the Public Girlfriend of a Top Celebrity? - Chapter 37
Chapter 37
Zheng Ling happily opened the message.
X: [Boss Zheng, could you help me water the flowers?]
She was on the verge of tears. She replied with a simple “OK” gesture emoji.
Shu Xuan: [Thank you]
Zheng Ling wanted to continue the conversation, but just then, Huang Tian’s father came into the office.
“Ling-jie, I’ve recovered. I can come back to work now,” said Huang Tian’s father, who looked much better. He’d been resting at home and was only returning today.
“Alright, let Yang Lei know. These past few days will be counted as sick leave,” Zheng Ling responded.
Suddenly, she remembered who Wu Yi resembled—that rude security captain who had insulted Shu Xuan before.
Zheng Ling pulled out the group photo taken at the reservoir’s completion ceremony and compared it closely to Wu Yi’s face.
Huang Tian’s father hadn’t left yet. He said, “Ling-jie, this doesn’t feel right. That guy already compensated me for my missed work. I shouldn’t be taking company money for it too.”
“What he gave you is his business. According to company policy, you’re still entitled to it. Now go do your work,” Zheng Ling said, still staring at her screen.
“Thanks, Ling-jie,” Huang Tian’s father said, then added, “By the way, what’s going on?”
Zheng Ling’s eyes shifted. “Come here. Take a look at this person. Doesn’t she look like the security captain who brought clothes for your kid?”
Huang Tian’s father bent over to look at the screen. “She does—looks just like her twin.”
“Alright then, I need you to do me a favor.” Zheng Ling beckoned with her finger.
“Ling-jie, say the word. Even if it’s something shady, I’ll do it for you,” Huang Tian’s father puffed out his chest.
Zheng Ling tapped him with her pen. “What shady business? I just need you to casually bring her up the next time he visits your house. Ask him if he knows her—make it sound casual, like you didn’t mean to.”
“Come here, I’ll teach you exactly how to say it,” Zheng Ling said, pulling him in for a whisper.
Huang Tian’s father nodded eagerly. “Alright… Got it.”
Two days later, Huang Tian’s father returned with an update.
“Ling-jie, that person is his cousin,” he said.
“He didn’t suspect anything, right?” Zheng Ling was going over financial reports.
Huang Tian’s father shook his head like a pendulum. “Of course not. I followed your script perfectly—talked about our cooperation with her regarding construction materials, praised Wu Yi, and the security captain immediately started bragging that she’s his cousin.”
“Good. Got it. You can get back to work now.”
That explained a lot. She had previously clashed with the security captain because of his rude comments. Now that a business partnership was in play, people like him would definitely look for a chance to get revenge.
Thank goodness Zheng Ling hadn’t gone to Secretary Chen for help. If she had, those small-minded people might have dragged him into it too.
Just as she was about to leave the office, Yang Lei came rushing in.
“Ling-jie! Someone from Nancheng Group wants to see you.”
“Who?” Zheng Ling asked, putting on her helmet—she had ridden her motorcycle to work that day.
“Not sure. Someone from Secretary Chen’s team passed along the message. People are starting to spread rumors that you and Secretary Chen are colluding,” Yang Lei said, struggling to keep up with her pace.
Zheng Ling swung her long leg over the motorcycle. “Got it.”
Meanwhile, Shu Xuan had just wrapped up shooting when she was blocked by a swarm of reporters at her hotel entrance.
Journalists crowded the doorway, firing off cutting questions one after another.
“Teacher Shu Xuan, is it true that your spouse is colluding with Secretary Chen of Nancheng?”
“Teacher Shu Xuan, how do you feel about your partner cheating during marriage?”
“What are your thoughts on the collusion between government and business?”
“Teacher Shu, are you the mistress, or is the other party the mistress?”
