How Can a Construction Foreman Be the Public Girlfriend of a Top Celebrity? - Chapter 45
Chapter 45
Shu Xuan didn’t offer Zheng Ling too many words of comfort—she knew her temperament and chose instead to respect all her emotions.
After arriving in Jiangcheng, Zheng Ling’s father sent a driver to pick them up. Neither of them spoke a word on the drive to the hospital.
Zheng Father stood outside the glass room, dressed in a suit, staring into the sterile ward at Zheng Mother. When he heard the sound of footsteps, he turned around. His temples were already graying, and his eyes were full of exhaustion.
“Dad.” Zheng Ling quickly composed herself upon seeing him and hurried over. Shu Xuan followed behind and had to jog slightly to keep up.
“Go home and rest first. I’ll stay here,” Zheng Father said gently. Then, spotting Shu Xuan behind her, he added, “Xiao Xuan, take her back.”
But Zheng Ling wouldn’t leave. She forced herself to stay calm. “What exactly happened?”
Zheng Father sighed. His voice trembled as he explained: “Your mother was driving when she collided with a septic truck that was changing lanes to overtake. Her thigh bone fractured and was exposed to sewage, leading to a severe infection and tissue necrosis.”
“And the person responsible?” Zheng Ling’s jaw clenched. This was entirely the fault of the overtaking driver.
“He died on the spot. The coroner ruled the cause of death was asphyxiation. When they pulled him from the car, he was submerged in waste. No family, not of mandatory marriage age—” Zheng Father punched the wall. “There’s no one to hold accountable.”
Zheng Ling hadn’t expected the situation to be like this. A regular car accident wouldn’t normally result in amputation—but of all things, it had to be a septic truck.
“Don’t worry, she’s out of danger now. Just waiting for her to wake up,” Zheng Father said gently as Zheng Ling collapsed into a metal chair.
Shu Xuan sat down beside her without saying anything, gently stroking her back.
“Dad, if something like this happens again, please tell me right away.” Zheng Ling’s voice was steady, but her words struck deep. She suddenly thought of what Shu Xuan had said to her at the airport. It seemed their expectations of one another were now the same. For a moment, she felt as if Shu Xuan truly saw her as her partner.
Zheng Father’s bloodshot eyes softened. He nodded. “Alright.”
Just then, his secretary called. Something urgent had come up at the company.
“Dad, I’ve got this. Go take care of work,” Zheng Ling said.
Zheng Father took a few steps away, then turned back. “When your mom wakes up, video call me immediately. I’ll be uneasy if she doesn’t see me.”
“Okay.”
After he left, Shu Xuan pulled out her phone to order food. She knew Zheng Ling normally ate on schedule, and she didn’t want her to go hungry—even if Shu Xuan herself was used to skipping meals.
Zheng Ling also took out her phone to message Yang Lei, explaining that there was a family emergency and she didn’t know when she’d return.
Luckily, there weren’t any pressing engineering issues at the moment. Only one matter required Zheng Ling’s signature. After the recent earthquake in Jin City, the company had procured a large batch of relief supplies, which had just arrived and needed to be sent to the disaster zone. Yang Lei didn’t have the clearance to authorize it.
The company had purchased sanitary pads, tampons, warm clothes for children, daily necessities, and emergency medicine. It was a large sum, and per company policy, Zheng Ling had to sign off on it personally.
So she asked Yang Lei to courier the documents to her the next day to avoid delaying the rebuilding efforts in Jin City.
When the delivery arrived, Shu Xuan went down to pick it up alone. The white hospital building was eerily quiet, with only one light on in the corridor. The outpatient department was closed, so she had to take the emergency exit to get outside.
As she reached the entrance, she bumped into someone. The silhouette seemed oddly familiar.
“Yang Yin?” Shu Xuan called out, testing the name.
