How Can a Construction Foreman Be the Public Girlfriend of a Top Celebrity? - Chapter 48
Chapter 48
Zheng’s mother was still holding her phone when she saw Shu Xuan walk in, dressed in a gray ostrich-feather-colored trench coat. Her face lit up with joy instantly.
“Xuan! You got here just as I called you?”
“Yes, Mom,” Shu Xuan set the bag in her hand down on the table and ended the call smoothly. “I brought you something delicious.”
Zheng’s mother pouted playfully and gestured to the elderly man and woman sharing the hospital room.
“See? I told you my daughter-in-law is a celebrity, and you didn’t believe me!”
The elderly couple, who had already been aware of the recent online buzz, knew Shu Xuan was her daughter-in-law. Unable to withstand Zheng’s mother’s constant bragging, they quickly nodded in agreement.
Zheng Ling hadn’t expected Shu Xuan to return so soon. She was genuinely happy inside but didn’t show it on her face.
“Have you eaten?”
It was lunchtime, and Shu Xuan shook her head.
“Not yet.”
“Then later, have Xiao Zheng take you to eat something good.”
Zheng’s mother happily opened the food Shu Xuan had brought and set up the tray table to dig in right away.
After Zheng’s mother finished eating, Shu Xuan and Zheng Ling left the hospital room together.
They walked side by side down the corridor in silence. The hospital smelled strongly of disinfectant, and on this floor, many hospitalized children were crying and fussing in the hallway.
“When are you going back to the set?”
Zheng Ling pressed the elevator button. Shu Xuan had already put on her face mask.
Several young nurses recognized Zheng Ling and greeted her—many now knew her as the “female hero.”
Shu Xuan entered the elevator and finally answered, “Tomorrow.”
“You really don’t have to keep running back and forth like this. It’s exhausting.”
Zheng Ling stepped in and pressed the ground floor button.
“You don’t want me to come back?”
Shu Xuan asked instinctively.
Of course Zheng Ling wanted her to. She just genuinely felt it was a waste of Shu Xuan’s limited rest time.
Seeing Zheng Ling stay silent, Shu Xuan added,
“I came back to see Mom, not you.”
“Alright then.”
Zheng Ling looked at her own reflection in the elevator door.
“What about Yang Yin? Has her husband been discharged?”
Zheng Ling nodded.
“Yeah, he was discharged just yesterday.”
“That incident… was it planned between the two of you?”
Shu Xuan walked out of the elevator first, and Zheng Ling followed after.
“It was my idea. I’m sorry you got dragged into it.”
Zheng Ling hadn’t explained it over the phone because she wanted to do so face-to-face.
Shu Xuan’s eyes curved, as if smiling.
“Boss Zheng, since when did you become so cautious and polite?”
Zheng Ling laughed.
“Wouldn’t you tread carefully too, standing in front of Teacher Shu?”
They found a Sichuan restaurant for lunch. As the dishes were being served, Zheng Ling received a call from Yang Lei.
“What’s up?”
Zheng Ling placed the sanitized utensils in front of Shu Xuan while holding the phone between her shoulder and ear.
“Sis Ling, the woman from the Tujia village who rented us the house wants to get her wages in advance,” Yang Lei said.
“Sure, go ahead.”
Zheng Ling was always generous and kind to the people working under her.
Yang Lei hesitated and paused for a while before finally saying,
“I think… it’s best to wait until you’re back and decide then.”
Zheng Ling frowned.
“Is it urgent for her?”
“No, but she’s been loudly insisting on it,” Yang Lei explained.
“Alright. I’ll check my schedule—I should be able to make a trip back next week.”
With that, Zheng Ling ended the call.
By then, the food had already arrived. Shu Xuan picked up a piece of Kung Pao Chicken and placed it into Zheng Ling’s bowl.
“What happened?”
“Do you remember that elderly woman from the Tujia village where we stayed?”
Zheng Ling asked.
“I remember,”
Shu Xuan said as she ladled some soup into her bowl.
