How Could a Scumbag Alpha Possibly Love His Wife? (GL, ABO) - Chapter 16
By 8 o’clock the next morning, Cheng Jiajian and Xu He were already dressed and had prepared all the documents required for the marriage registration.
Cheng Wan was also sitting in the living room, waiting. Her gaze was lowered, eyes fixed on the back of her hands.
Cheng Qiaoqing had left early for school since it was Monday. Originally, Cheng Jiajian had planned to go to the office as well, but after some thought, he decided to stay—just in case Bai Juntang changed her mind again.
“Here are your documents. You must keep them safe,” Xu He said, placing a folder in front of Cheng Wan and reminding her firmly. “Bai Juntang is the kind of person who always has something up her sleeve. Once the registration is done, make sure to hold on to the marriage certificate. If she asks you to sign any kind of agreement, do not sign it.”
Cheng Jiajian nodded in agreement. “The Bai family is now under Bai Juntang’s control. After the marriage, the assets she holds will be considered jointly owned. If she proposes a prenuptial agreement or wants to divide property beforehand, you must refuse.”
Xu He quickly chimed in, nodding repeatedly. “You’re carrying a child now. No matter what Bai Juntang thinks, once you’re married to her, you’re entitled to a share of her family fortune.”
“Status through the child”—perhaps this was the perfect description of Cheng Wan’s situation now.
Xu He looked at Cheng Wan with a sigh of emotion. Holding Cheng Wan’s hand, which rested on her lap, she said gently, “Wanwan, you’re the hope of the Cheng family. Whether the company can go public now depends on you.”
She added, “Looking at you now reminds me of the first time we saw you at the orphanage. Being able to adopt you was truly our family’s good fortune.”
Without lifting a finger, they had secured Bai Juntang—and now, with a child as leverage in Cheng Wan’s womb, it was a business deal that couldn’t be more profitable.
Cheng Jiajian also spoke to her, “I know you’re unwilling, but we’ve raised you for so many years. Think of this as your way of repaying us.”
Repay them?
Cheng Wan looked up at Cheng Jiajian and couldn’t help but laugh.
“I don’t want to marry Bai Juntang anymore,” Cheng Wan said softly. “She doesn’t like me, and we’re both miserable together.”
Cheng Jiajian’s face darkened immediately. “What nonsense are you talking about? Why would you suddenly refuse to get married when everything was going fine?”
“Exactly,” Xu He added, trying to persuade her. “Sure, Bai Juntang isn’t the easiest person to get along with—she’s short-tempered and moody—but she has money. Just endure it for a while. Do you really want your child to suffer after being born?”
Cheng Wan clenched her fists, trembling slightly as the memory of the glass of water Xu He had given her that night came rushing back.
When Xu He saw that she wasn’t saying anything, she grew uneasy. She picked up the folder from in front of Cheng Wan, stood up, and said firmly, “Whether you like it or not, you’re getting that marriage certificate with Bai Juntang.”
Cheng Wan looked up at her, pain and disbelief filling her eyes.
She wasn’t the Cheng family’s biological daughter, but they had raised her for over ten years. Even a pet would earn affection in that time—so why were they treating her like this?
She couldn’t even make decisions about her own marriage.
Just then, they all heard a car pulling up outside. The housekeeper glanced out the window and said to the three in the living room, “Sir, Madam, Miss Bai’s car is here. She’s waiting outside.”
Cheng Jiajian glanced at Cheng Wan, then turned to his wife and said, “Give the documents directly to Bai Juntang. Don’t let Cheng Wan hold them.”
He was worried Cheng Wan would change her mind once they got to the registry office.
Xu He nodded and added, “I’ll go with them. I won’t feel at ease unless I see them register in front of me.”
Cheng Wan shook her head, her voice trembling. “I’m not going. Please stop forcing me. What you’re doing is marriage fraud—you could be held legally responsible.”
“Fraud? What fraud?” Cheng Jiajian snapped, his face dark with anger. “Isn’t the baby you’re carrying Bai Juntang’s? You didn’t call it fraud back then—now you grow a conscience? Too late. Bai Juntang is already outside. Like it or not, this marriage is happening.”
“I…”
Before Cheng Wan could finish, Bai Juntang walked into the house.
She was dressed in a red-and-white denim jacket, paired with a shirt and jeans—looking casual, relaxed, and confident. With her hands in her pockets, she took one look at the tense room and asked with a faint smirk, “What’s going on? Are the three of you arguing?”
Xu He quickly stepped in front of Bai Juntang’s line of sight, blocking her from looking at Cheng Wan, and greeted her warmly. “Miss Bai, you look absolutely stunning today. That red really suits you.”
Bai Juntang smiled slightly. “Is that so? Thank you, Mrs. Cheng.”
Her eyes shifted past Xu He to Cheng Wan, who still had her back turned. Speaking to her directly, she said, “If you’re ready, let’s go. The appointment is booked—once we get there, we can take care of everything.”
Then she turned to Xu He. “Are the documents ready?”
“They are, they are,” Xu He said quickly, handing the folder over with a big smile. “Everything’s here. It’s Wanwan’s first time registering for marriage—should I go with you? I can help if anything comes up.”
“No need.”
Holding Cheng Wan’s ID, Bai Juntang looked at her and said, “We still have other places to go after this. It’ll be inconvenient if you come along.”
Xu He looked slightly embarrassed but kept a calm expression. When she saw Bai Juntang holding Cheng Wan’s documents, she finally felt a bit more at ease.
“Wanwan, hurry up and go register with Miss Bai. It won’t be good if you’re late,” Xu He turned to Cheng Wan and gently scolded, “Stop being so stubborn. You’re going to be a mother soon—you can’t afford to act like a child anymore.”
Cheng Wan couldn’t understand any of it. She looked directly at Bai Juntang and met her eyes.
This woman… how pitiful.
Cheng Wan shook her head and said quietly, “I don’t want to go. Miss Bai, you—”
“Cheng Wan!” Xu He interrupted sharply, clearly annoyed. “What are you doing? Don’t throw a tantrum on a day like this. You’re not a little girl anymore. You need to think about the consequences.”
Bai Juntang glanced at the frustrated Xu He, then calmly stepped up to Cheng Wan, looking down at her with a cool expression. “What’s wrong, Miss Cheng? Are you having second thoughts?”
Cheng Wan looked up at her and slowly nodded.
The living room went completely silent. Cheng Jiajian and Xu He looked uneasy, both watching Bai Juntang closely, worried she might storm off in anger.
But instead, Bai Juntang gave a faint smile of satisfaction. She reached out and gently ruffled Cheng Wan’s hair. “Do you know how many people wish they could be with me? And you actually have the nerve to say no.”
Then she looked her in the eyes and said, “But it’s too late now. I’ve already arranged everything for our wedding. You don’t get to back out—you’re coming with me to register.”
Just as Cheng Wan opened her mouth to protest, Bai Juntang lightly pressed her thumb against her lips.
Cheng Wan froze for a moment, stunned by the soft pressure on her mouth.
Just as Bai Juntang had expected—Cheng Wan looked delicate, and her lips were just as soft as she imagined. Even through her fingers, the sensation stirred something inside her.
She leaned down and whispered next to Cheng Wan’s ear, “Don’t worry. I look this good, and it’s not because I used my brains. You don’t need to worry about me.”
Her fingers gently traced the curve of Cheng Wan’s lips as she looked into her eyes. “Let’s go. Otherwise, we’ll be late.”
Xu He’s eyes lit up the moment she heard that. She quickly added, “Yes, yes—go now, don’t waste any more time!”
Cheng Wan tried to say something, but before she could speak, Bai Juntang had already taken her hand and pulled her up from the sofa, wrapping one arm around her.
Held so suddenly and so close, Cheng Wan’s body stiffened. She looked up at Bai Juntang in shock, completely unable to understand what this woman was really thinking.
Bai Juntang gave a slight smile, greeted the Cheng family politely, and then led Cheng Wan outside.
She never let go of Cheng Wan’s hand—not until they got into the car did they finally separate for a moment.
Cheng Wan could still smell Bai Juntang’s faint scent on her shoulder. Glancing at the woman beside her, she couldn’t help but speak again. “We really shouldn’t be doing this…”
“If you say it once or twice, I’ll take it as you caring about me. But if you keep repeating it, it gets a little too much,” Bai Juntang said calmly, turning to look at her. “Am I really that unworthy? You’ve turned me down over and over again.”
As the car slowly pulled away, Cheng Wan leaned against the seat, watching the villa fade into the distance. She sighed, helpless and tired.
“Miss Bai,” she said, turning to her, “you should’ve listened to me.”
Bai Juntang met her gaze. “I always thought you didn’t look like Cheng Jiajian or Xu He. It made sense—you’re not their biological daughter, are you?”
Cheng Wan stayed silent.
Bai Juntang continued as if talking to herself, “I’m marrying you because of the baby. It needs to be born with a proper identity. That’s reason enough, so you don’t need to keep bringing it up.”
Cheng Wan frowned slightly, thinking for a moment before asking, “Then… shouldn’t we sign a prenuptial agreement?”
“I didn’t prepare one,” Bai Juntang replied.
“What about a property agreement?” Cheng Wan asked again.
“Didn’t prepare that either,” Bai Juntang said casually, resting her head against her hand.
“You…” Cheng Wan stared at her, shocked. She hadn’t prepared anything—was she just waiting to be tricked?
Seeing how anxious Cheng Wan looked, Bai Juntang couldn’t help but smile. She reached over and gently took Cheng Wan’s hand in hers, and that simple gesture was enough to silence her.
Cheng Wan still wasn’t used to this kind of physical closeness. Being held like that made her nervous and unsure.
But the faint scent of cedar clinging to Bai Juntang somehow made her feel more at ease.
Bai Juntang was her alpha—the partner destined to mark her for life. That thought kept rising in Cheng Wan’s mind. And now, it was stronger than ever, as if it was trying to break free.
Bai Juntang seemed to sense her thoughts too. She gave her hand a gentle squeeze and said softly, “Don’t worry. Just leave everything to me.”
The marriage registration process was simple. They made a few copies of the necessary documents and signed their names on several forms.
As the staff member stamped the bright red seals onto the marriage certificates with a loud ka-ka, she smiled and said, “Congratulations to both of you. These are your marriage certificates.”
Cheng Wan took the certificate from her hands and stared at the photo inside. It took a few moments for it all to sink in.
She had actually married Bai Juntang.
