How Could a Scumbag Alpha Possibly Love His Wife? (GL, ABO) - Chapter 19
When Bai Juntang arrived, the security post was already empty. The entire building was quiet and still.
In a big city like this, working overtime past ten wasn’t uncommon. On her way there, Bai Juntang passed by several people just getting off work, along with a few delivery drivers carrying late-night meals—no doubt heading into the complex to drop food off for someone still working.
She relied on memory to make her way upstairs. The hallway lights were still on, silently signaling that someone was still here.
Her high heels echoed faintly on the polished floors, the sound unusually sharp in the calm, empty corridor.
As she stepped into the office area, she noticed a single light still on in the far corner. After a moment’s thought, she walked toward it.
The office door was slightly ajar. Without knocking, Bai Juntang slowly pushed it open—and there, she saw Cheng Wan, asleep at her desk.
A small stack of printed documents sat beside the printer, which had apparently jammed—its warning light flashing quietly, though the machine itself made no sound.
Bai Juntang folded her arms and looked at the sleeping Cheng Wan, unable to hold back a smile.
Was she really that tired—falling asleep in the office like this?
Fortunately, the floors were carpeted, so her footsteps made no noise. As she walked further in, she casually glanced over the stack of documents. They were clearly bid proposals—the ones that had been rejected and needed to be redone.
Bai Juntang vaguely remembered something about them being returned for corrections, but it hadn’t seemed so urgent. Why the need to work overtime like this?
As she flipped through the papers, her eyes kept drifting back to Cheng Wan.
Even though they’d just seen each other that morning—gone to the hospital together, even—it hadn’t been twelve hours since they last parted. Still, Bai Juntang found herself unable to stop looking at her.
Holding the papers in one hand, she leaned in slightly, unable to resist getting a closer look.
Cheng Wan’s skin was fair, and though she looked slim and delicate, her face had a soft, gentle roundness to it, with just a hint of a pink flush.
Maybe it was because she’d only recently graduated, but Cheng Wan still carried a bit of youthful innocence—young, fresh, and undeniably cute.
Honestly, it was a look Bai Juntang really liked.
Cute, natural, beautiful, and well-mannered.
The Cheng family really did their homework, she thought. They knew exactly what I liked—and sent her straight to my bed. How calculated.
Bai Juntang’s eyes moved to Cheng Wan’s eyelashes. She looked uncomfortable in her sleep—her brows were faintly furrowed, and her lips were pressed tightly together.
Without thinking, Bai Juntang reached out and gently brushed the loose strands of hair away from Cheng Wan’s face.
A faint scent of cedar—her own pheromones—naturally began to release in the quiet space. Almost instantly, Cheng Wan’s brows relaxed a little, her expression softening as if she were finally at ease.
Bai Juntang’s gaze dropped to the corner of her lips. Slowly, she leaned down and—gathering a little courage—left a gentle kiss on her cheek.
Cheng Wan didn’t stir, still peacefully asleep.
Forget it, Bai Juntang thought, straightening up.
She walked over and sat down in the chair nearby. Since Cheng Wan was finally getting some rest, she didn’t want to disturb her. It was rare to see her sleep so deeply—she might as well let her rest a little longer.
Maybe she really was too exhausted. Cheng Wan slept at her desk for over an hour. It wasn’t until nearly 11:30 that she slowly began to wake up.
Sleeping with your head on a desk wasn’t exactly comfortable. As soon as she sat up, Cheng Wan felt the soreness in her back and neck.
She sat there for a moment, trying to fully wake herself up. Then it hit her—she had fallen asleep waiting for the documents to finish printing.
How did I fall asleep so deeply? she wondered.
She rubbed her stiff neck and thought to herself: I’ve been getting sleepy so early lately. Every night by nine I’m already tired, and by ten I’m out cold, sleeping through the night without even dreaming.
People always said that pregnant women tend to sleep more and get nauseous easily—and now Cheng Wan was truly experiencing it firsthand.
So, this is how hard it is to carry a baby…
“Awake now?”
A voice suddenly broke the silence, startling Cheng Wan so much that she nearly jumped out of her seat.
Wide-eyed, she turned to look at Bai Juntang. “W-What are you doing here?”
“I sent you a message, but you didn’t reply,” Bai Juntang said, casually crossing her legs as she flipped through the bid documents. “Then I noticed the lights were still on here, so I came up to check.”
“The printer jammed,” she added calmly. “Nothing else came out after that. I didn’t want to wake you, and I wasn’t sure where you left off, so I didn’t touch it.”
Cheng Wan quickly went to the printer, adjusted the settings on the computer, and watched as the machine started working again. Only then did she breathe a quiet sigh of relief.
Once the printer resumed, she glanced at the time—and realized it was nearly midnight.
She turned to Bai Juntang, hesitated for a moment, then asked, “Miss Bai… why are you here?”
“Just passing by. Thought I’d keep you company.”
“…You didn’t have to. Once I finish, I’ll head home.”
Bai Juntang looked at the clock and said, “It’s almost twelve. Aren’t you worried about walking alone this late? You’re an Omega.”
“I’ll be fine,” Cheng Wan replied. “We live in a lawful society. Not everyone out there is dangerous.”
“Is someone from your family picking you up?”
“…I’ll just call a cab. It’s not too far from here.”
Bai Juntang looked at her with a hint of exasperation, then tilted her head slightly and said, “Come sleep at my place tonight.”
The moment those words left her mouth, both she and Cheng Wan froze.
That sentence was just a little too suggestive.
Realizing it, Bai Juntang quickly added, “My place is a bit closer. It’s already so late, and it’s not safe for you to take a cab alone.”
“Thank you,” Cheng Wan said softly, watching the printer finish the last few pages. She stood up and looked at Bai Juntang. “But I’ll just take a cab. I’ll be fine.”
Seeing her firmly decline, Bai Juntang couldn’t help feeling a little disappointed. She, Bai Juntang, had both looks and brains—people used to line up just for the chance to go home with her. That list could’ve wrapped around the gates of the entire industrial park.
She frowned slightly and said, “We’re married now. How much longer are you planning to keep your distance from me?”
She looked at Cheng Wan and continued, “You understand the idea of putting on a convincing act, right? Since we’re doing this together, you could at least meet me halfway.”
Cheng Wan stood holding the documents, unsure how to respond. Her eyes met Bai Juntang’s, and for a long moment, neither of them spoke.
Finally, Bai Juntang stepped closer, reached out, and gently took Cheng Wan’s wrist. Her gaze softened as she said, “We just got our marriage certificate today. I’m pretty sure your parents would expect you to stay with me tonight.”
There was a faint scent of alcohol on Bai Juntang, mixed with her usual crisp cedarwood fragrance. It made Cheng Wan feel oddly light-headed, almost as if that wine had somehow touched her too.
Leaning back slightly against the desk, Cheng Wan looked up at her. Bai Juntang was standing close, her eyes quietly locked on her.
“You’ve been drinking,” Cheng Wan said quietly. “Drinking too much isn’t good for you.”
Bai Juntang gave a small smile and nodded. “I know. But it was just a bit of red wine. Good for the skin, they say.”
Cheng Wan pressed her lips together, wanting to say that red wine could still get you drunk—but she stopped. Would that sound like she was overstepping?
After all, were they really close enough for her to say that?
Maybe it was the stillness of the night, or maybe it was the wine and wind from earlier—but Bai Juntang felt the warmth of Cheng Wan’s hand so clearly now.
She suddenly caught a soft trace of white peach—the scent of Cheng Wan’s pheromones. It was faint, like it could vanish at any moment, but she noticed it.
This woman had become her wife today. And she was carrying her child.
With the permanent bond between Alpha and Omega pulling at her instincts, Bai Juntang suddenly found Cheng Wan unbelievably beautiful tonight.
How did such a perfect girl end up quietly landing in my hands like this? she thought.
Her eyes lingered on Cheng Wan’s lips—soft and pink—and without thinking, she leaned in and kissed her.
Cheng Wan had never experienced anything this intimate before. Her entire body tensed.
The air grew heavy with pheromones. Bai Juntang wrapped one arm around her waist and pulled her gently into her arms.
The kiss flowed naturally. Cheng Wan didn’t resist—she slowly opened her mouth, allowing Bai Juntang to deepen it.
Their breath mingled, warm and quick. Cheng Wan tilted her head slightly, letting herself fall into Bai Juntang’s scent.
The cedarwood, mixed with the taste of wine, was intoxicating.
Bai Juntang wasn’t drunk—but she was overwhelmed by the growing sense of ownership. Cheng Wan was hers now. The need to claim her fully as an Alpha surged, too strong to ignore.
It frightened her, how intense the feeling was—yet the thought wouldn’t leave.
Cheng Wan would be her wife.
Cheng Wan would give birth to her child.
Cheng Wan was her Omega, and hers alone.
Even when she finally pulled away, those thoughts still spun wildly in her mind, leaving a burning ache behind.
Cheng Wan’s eyes were a little red at the corners. Her already fair skin had turned rosy from the kiss, giving her a delicate, almost glowing look. She seemed wrapped in a soft blush of pink that made Bai Juntang want to kiss her all over again.
“I…” Cheng Wan was slightly out of breath. She’d never kissed anyone before, and Bai Juntang’s kiss had caught her completely off guard.
Her eyes were glassy, the tips of her ears glowing red. Bai Juntang couldn’t help but recall those hazy, half-remembered nights—when Cheng Wan had seemed even more irresistible than now.
Of course, Cheng Wan had no idea what Bai Juntang was thinking. Her voice was soft and hoarse as she said, “I… should finish my work first.”
Reluctantly, Bai Juntang let go and stepped back. “Alright,” she said, a little pouty. “Go finish your work.”
Cheng Wan hurried past her and started organizing the files. Bai Juntang sat nearby, pretending to scroll on her phone—but she wasn’t really paying attention. Her gaze kept drifting back to Cheng Wan.
As she watched her, one thought kept circling in her mind—
Why is she working so hard? Does a junior employee really need to work this late?
Bai Juntang glanced at the time and rested her chin in one hand.
So, this is our first day of marriage?
Just a quiet taste of it…
But she had to admit—
It tasted pretty good.
