- Chapter 30 - These Vermin Have Grown Wings and Think They Can Fly
Chapter 30
The Disciples’ Hall of Taixian Sect occupied an entire mountain peak. From a distance, the sweeping expanse of buildings gave off an air of openness and grandeur.
Up close, the jade-tiled roofs and crimson eaves gleamed beneath the sunlight, while the jade railings and carved balustrades exuded a sense of refined tranquility.
The one in charge of the Disciples’ Hall was a female cultivator named Wu Lan. Smiling warmly, she introduced the facilities to the new arrivals.
You all already have some cultivation, she said. Aside from those still in the Qi Refinement stage who must follow the full curriculum, the rest of you only need to attend the core classes for three months. After that, you’re free to choose whichever subjects you wish to study.
The full class schedule can be found in your transmission jade slips. Some functions will unlock a year later, once you’ve passed your assessments.
She then pointed toward a nearby building with green tiles and red walls. And this is the Dining Hall, one of the most beloved places in the entire sect. Unless it’s necessary, no one here bothers with fasting pills. Once you’ve eaten here, you’ll understand why.
After introducing the classrooms, training grounds, and other facilities, Wu Lan led them to the residential area, where each disciple was assigned their own room.
The lodgings were spacious and fully furnished. Mats, bedding, and meditation cushions were already prepared. Each room even had a private bath for medicinal soaks.
Li Xi couldn’t help but sigh in amazement. The accommodations were far beyond what she’d imagined. Truly, this was the most indulgent sect in the entire realm.
After unpacking a bit, she headed straight out the door.
Her third senior brother had said Taixian Sect’s food was famous across the entire Xuancang Realm and she couldn’t wait to confirm it for herself.
The dining hall was vast inside, its setup reminiscent of a modern cafeteria.
It was dinner time, and the place was already lively with chatter.
After choosing their dishes, the group found a table and sat down.
Tonight’s meal was steamed spirit fish freshly caught from the sect’s spiritual spring, the cooks said.
Li Xi took one bite, and her eyes lit up.
The flesh was tender and rich, the special sauce perfectly complementing its freshness, it was so good it made her tongue tingle.
The spicy rabbit meat was equally exquisite, bursting with flavor that danced across her taste buds. Even the vegetables were brimming with spiritual energy, crisp and refreshing.
Li Xi ate without lifting her head, utterly enraptured. Joining this sect was the best decision of her life!
What on earth had she been eating for the past decade? Those “plain meals” didn’t even deserve to be called food!
This was real cuisine!
The others were just as delighted, savoring every bite with pure bliss.
Truly, bless their Patriarch, the Taixian Sect was a paradise!
Nearby, a chubby boy of about twelve or thirteen waddled over, carrying his food tray. He leaned toward Lin Zewu and asked curiously,
“You guys are new, huh? Why are you joining a month after the recruitment ended?”
Honest as always, Lin Zewu didn’t think twice before answering, “Our Patriarch brought us here. Steward Wu said we’ll just make up the classes we missed before joining everyone else.”
The boy’s eyes sparkled with gossip. “I’m Jin You. What’s your name? Who’s your Patriarch? My parents are both cultivators here, so I hear everything. If there’s anything you don’t understand, just ask me!”
He even thumped his chest for emphasis.
“Patriarch Chengyuan and Patriarch Cang Min,” Lin Zewu replied honestly.
Jin You’s mouth dropped into an O-shape. He gave Lin Zewu a big thumbs-up.
“Whoa, you guys are amazing!” No wonder they could join a whole month late, their backing was insanely strong!
Lin Zewu quickly hit it off with Jin You, and soon the younger disciples were all playing together.
Meanwhile, Li Xi returned to her room to study her transmission jade slip.
Their curriculum included swordsmanship, body refinement, movement arts, cultivation theory, and even classes on conduct and etiquette.
There was also a course she’d always wanted to try, divination and fortune calculation.
Her master’s available courses were even more impressive: alchemy, talisman crafting, artifact forging, formation studies, and healing arts. Those were just the basics. There were also courses on astrology, puppet-making, music, mineral extraction, and more.
Half the names, Li Xi couldn’t even understand yet.
It felt like she had jumped straight from a vocational school into a world-class university.
Everything she’d learned before suddenly seemed so trivial!
She clenched her small fists in determination. She would work hard—she’d outshine all of them!
Unfortunately, some sections of the jade slip were still locked for new disciples, so she couldn’t check the latest updates on the demonic cultivator case.
She wondered how the other sects were reacting to it.
Meanwhile, in the main hall atop Taixian Sect’s peak, the Sect Master and the elders had convened a meeting. After the discussion, they agreed to alert the other top sects as soon as possible.
The Gathering Evil Array Disk was a masterpiece only someone with profound expertise in formations could have crafted.
That meant the demonic or heretical side had a formation master of exceptional skill, perhaps even at the grandmaster level.
Their conclusion was clear: this wasn’t just the work of rogue heretic cultivators. It likely involved the demonic path or even the demon race itself.
The heretics and demons must have allied, though from the looks of it, the heretics were being used as pawns.
After all, heretic cultivators sought power and indulgence, but they would never willingly become demons.
There was a clear difference between heretics and demons.
And that difference made the situation dire.
They could no longer dismiss these people as mere vermin lurking in the shadows.
These vermin had grown wings and were threatening to take to the skies.
Sect Master Hengyu’s face was grave as he issued a series of orders.
Formation masters were to take the Gathering Evil Array Disks to areas thick with yin and demonic energy to conduct field tests.
Healers would accompany them to study how the corruption spread to estimate how long it took for a heretic cultivator, after rapid power growth, to lose their mind and turn into a flesh-devouring fiend.
When the other top sects received the Taixian Sect’s message, they immediately took the matter seriously.
Their own experts examined the recorded image of the array and confirmed that it indeed absorbed demonic energy.
Although the full results were still pending, it was clear that the heretics, demons, and even the demon race itself were plotting something large-scale.
Given the potential threat to the entire Xuancang Realm, they began acting at once.
Soon, under the leadership of the Ten Great Sects, a new Heretic Extermination Order was issued.
It wasn’t anything new; these orders were common enough, and heretic cultivators were being hunted constantly anyway.
So this announcement wouldn’t raise suspicion.
But behind the scenes, the sects began closely monitoring the movements of demonic cultivators and searching for any trace of the demon race.
The Demon-Detecting Mirrors in every city were quietly upgraded and reinstalled above the city gates.
The human trafficking case Yan Jiuzhi had mentioned was also reopened for investigation.
Disciples from every sect were dispatched, disguised as low-level cultivators, to villages and towns to search for traces of heretics.
Even the mortal realm, which was sealed off by barriers, had undercover disciples sent in to investigate.
They feared the demons might be preparing large-scale bl00d sacrifices among the mortals.
This cleansing… would be thorough and unstoppable.
At this moment, inside the grand hall of the Changyue Sect, Xia Mengxue was submitting the Gathering Fiend Array Disk she had painstakingly discovered.
She was about to explain in detail the danger of this formation when the sect master smiled at her and said, “Well done. You’ve worked hard. Take some time to rest, and afterward, accept a mission to hunt down demonic cultivators.”
Sect Master, this array disk can absorb demonic energy. It can turn a demonic cultivator into a true demon!
Xia Mengxue hurried to explain, thinking he had yet to realize its true nature.
But the sect master merely looked at her with approval. “You were quick to notice the problem. You’ve done very well, Mengxue. However, the matter has already been made known to the Ten Great Sects. Related missions have long since been issued.”
Xia Mengxue’s eyes widened in shock. She had received a mission through her communication jade slip about eliminating demonic cultivators, but she had thought it was just one of those routine assignments.
She never imagined it was because of the Gathering Fiend Array!
That meant the large-scale demon purge had started decades earlier than in her previous life, completely throwing off her plans.
Fury and alarm surged through her. She didn’t even need to think long before realizing the culprit.
Yan Jiuzhi!
It had to be him!
Suppressing the turmoil in her heart, Xia Mengxue lowered her head and quietly withdrew from the main hall.
When she returned to her quarters, she ran into Wei Liantao, who was dressed up extravagantly.
This woman was the younger cousin of Wei Yutong.
Though only a dual-spirit-root cultivator, she had somehow taken Wei Yutong’s place and become their senior brother’s personal disciple.
So what had happened to Wei Yutong, the legitimate daughter of the Wei family’s head?
Even though Wei Liantao was just a useless junior niece in her eyes, this deviation from her past life puzzled Xia Mengxue deeply.
“Little Martial Aunt, where have you been?” Wei Liantao asked cheerily, holding up an ornate hairpin in front of her. “Senior Brother Wang gave me this lotus hairpin. Isn’t it pretty?”
The bragging tone made Xia Mengxue’s stomach churn.
This girl not only lacked Wei Yutong’s talent, but she didn’t even have her wits.
All she did was obsess over clothes and jewelry while trying to flirt her way into favor with the male disciples.
Already in a foul mood, Xia Mengxue had no patience to pretend to be the kind and gentle martial aunt. Her lips curved in a mocking smile.
“Why are you telling me this, Martial Niece? We cultivators shouldn’t cling to worldly possessions. How long have you been in the sect now? You’re still only at the fifth level of Qi Refining. You’d better focus on your cultivation.”
With that, she turned and walked straight into her room, activating the barrier behind her.
She needed time to think about how she could still earn enough merit points after this setback.
That damned Yan Jiuzhi. How dare he ruin her plans! She and he were enemies from now on!
Outside, Wei Liantao stomped her foot in anger.
What was Xia Mengxue so proud about?
Did she spend less time on her appearance than anyone else?
What right did she have to look down on her?
Wei Liantao clenched her fists, her expression twisting with jealousy.
She would steal all the affection their master and senior brothers gave to Xia Mengxue.
If she could push Wei Yutong aside to enter the Changyue Sect, she could just as easily push Xia Mengxue down.
And become the most beloved little martial sister in the entire sect.
