- Chapter 35 - The Graduation Assessment for New Disciples
Chapter 35
Time flowed by quietly, like a gentle stream slipping through the fingers.
The days Li Xi spent in the Disciples’ Hall were busy yet fulfilling her schedule packed from dawn till dusk, every day brimming with learning and practice. Before she knew it, the day of the new disciples’ graduation assessment had arrived.
Within the rich spiritual atmosphere of Tai Xian Sect, everyone’s cultivation had advanced considerably. Li Xi herself had already broken through to the tenth level of Qi Refinement, placing her among the stronger disciples in this round of testing.
However, her Third Senior Brother had repeatedly warned her not to advance too quickly. He wanted her to build a solid foundation tempering her body’s endurance, purifying her spiritual energy, and strengthening her core before she even considered Foundation Establishment.
After all, Tai Xian Sect discouraged disciples, especially personal disciples, from relying on pills to build their foundation.
Lin Shanlai had successfully reformed his golden core and leapt straight to the late Core Formation stage. His cultivation was now too advanced to join the beginners’ assessment, so he was grouped with Gao Lang and Yan Jiuzhi for a separate, higher level test.
Li Xi, meanwhile, stood among a crowd of new disciples gathered on the training field, listening as a stern-looking middle-aged elder laid out the assessment rules.
Her heart thumped part nerves, part excitement.
You’ve been in Tai Xian Sect for a year now, the elder began, his sharp gaze sweeping across them. As disciples of this sect, you must not only cultivate diligently but also temper your mindset and learn to work as a team.
Today’s assessment is similar to your usual group training. You will need to cooperate with one another to reach the final destination. The key here is teamwork no one can go far alone. True cultivators grow stronger together, complementing each other’s strengths.
In this test if you abandon your teammates in danger, points will be deducted. If you charge in blindly to save someone and end up dragging yourself down, points will be deducted. If you ignore everyone and fight alone without any sense of cooperation points will be deducted.
With a flick of the elder’s sleeve, all the new disciples vanished from the field the assessment had officially begun.
The terrain behind the mountain was complex dense forests, jagged cliffs, rushing waterfalls, and winding streams.
Li Xi’s vision blurred, and when it cleared, she was standing in a quiet, shadowy forest. She quickly oriented herself and joined several disciples racing toward the designated goal.
They darted through the trees like nimble monkeys, their movements smooth and well-coordinated.
That is until the senior brothers and sisters assigned to “hunt” them showed up.
The air of seriousness vanished instantly. From behind came a loud, sinister laugh.
“Mwahahahaha”
Followed by a barrage of gray spheres flying through the trees.
The seniors, dressed in gray robes, chased them like gleeful predators, throwing the gray orbs with reckless abandon. Anyone hit would lose points.
Worse, several of the “hunters” wore ridiculous masks and kept shouting in exaggerated voices while hurling the balls.
“Run, little chicks! Run faster
Mwahahaha!
“Pretty junior brothers and sisters, come to Senior Sister~ Senior Sister will ‘love’ you dearly~”
Li Xi almost tripped from sheer disbelief. Was this really a solemn sect assessment?! Why did it feel like a group of lunatics playing tag?!
Despite her internal screaming, she moved swiftly, dodging incoming gray balls while keeping an eye on nearby disciples.
Just as she deflected one aimed at a younger disciple, a beat-heavy rhythm suddenly thumped through the forest.
Wait was that rap?
A few senior brothers appeared, masks painted in garish colors, bobbing their heads to the rhythm.
“Hey! Stop right there! Left foot right foot, right foot left foot your footwork’s wrong!”
“Hey! Stop right there! Left hand right hand, right hand left hand your hand signs are wrong!”
“Hey! Stop right there! Left twist right twist, right twist left twist your form’s wrong!”
Li Xi:
Stop? Are you kidding me? Who can keep up with that beat while running for their life?!
Before she could finish the thought, several disciples beside her lost rhythm and tumbled into a heap on the ground.
Suppressing a sigh, Li Xi drew her sword. Silver light flashed her Water-Moon Sword Technique flowed like dancing wind, its shimmering blades slicing through every gray orb that came near.
Behind her, more laughter and cheers erupted the seniors clearly enjoyed this far too much.
The fallen disciples scrambled back up and resumed their frantic escape.
After struggling through the forest, they reached a cliffside filled with jagged rocks. The attacks became fiercer now, the gray balls raining down faster and closer together, as if the seniors had decided warm-up time was over.
Li Xi’s movements were precise and graceful, her silver sword aura swirling around her like a protective current, deflecting each incoming orb.
Spotting a fellow disciple slipping toward a steep drop, she flicked her wrist her spirit rope lashed out and pulled him to safety.
But then, the rock beneath her foot gave way. She stumbled and plunged downward.
“Oops~ Junior Sister fell~ Be careful now~” a senior sister cooed mockingly.
A volley of gray balls followed immediately after.
Just as the barrage descended, a rope shot out from above, wrapping around Li Xi’s waist and yanking her up.
It was Xiao Cui her punch followed like a thunderclap, shattering the oncoming gray spheres one after another.
Li Xi steadied herself, formed quick hand seals, and sent a few wind blades flying back at their pursuers before dashing onward with Xiao Cui beside her.
Though Xiao Cui’s aptitude was the weakest among them, her perseverance was unmatched. She had made great progress in the Five Elements Body Tempering Art, breaking through twice in the past year to reach the fifth level of Qi Refinement.
Her reflexes were sharp she stayed close to Li Xi, fists flashing as she smashed incoming projectiles mid-run.
Meanwhile, Jin You the little fat one was shockingly nimble. He weaved and spun through the rocks like his body weighed nothing at all, the folds of his robes fluttering like a carefree spirit.
Of course, his mouth never stopped.
Hey! Senior Sister Wei left foot right foot, right foot left foot step into that hole.
Wei Yutong’s expression darkened instantly as her foot got stuck in a pit.
Her teeth gnashed audibly. You ‘hey’ again, and I’ll show you what real pain feels like!
Beside her, Tao Wen and Lin Ruo quickly blasted the gray balls around her so she could pull her foot free. Fuming, Wei Yutong flung a flurry of wind blades back in retaliation.
Despite the chaos, the new disciples showed surprising coordination. After all, teamwork had been drilled into them since their very first day at Tai Xian Sect.
Together, they scaled ridges, crossed stone peaks, and endured endless waves of attacks never quite smooth sailing, but always pushing forward.
Unfortunately, their pursuers were relentless and creative.
At one point, the seniors cornered them by a stream and started banging on gongs like madmen.
The clanging was so sharp it rattled their bones. Li Xi’s face twisted in agony; she felt like her eardrums were about to burst.
Then came another storm of gray balls, raining down like a torrential downpour.
As they fought their way through the chaos half-deaf, half covered in soot every one of them had the same thought running through their minds:
What kind of Upright secT does this sort of thing?! Can’t they take anything seriously.
