- Chapter 39 - Could He… Be Reborn Too?
Chapter 39
The peak of Drunken Dust was shrouded in clouds and mist that curled like silk, wrapping the mountain in a hazy, dreamlike aura. Immortal light shimmered faintly through the haze.
There were sheer cliffs and cascading waterfalls, spirit trees heavy with glowing fruit, and rare beasts wandering among the rocks.
A group of disciples descended slowly on the backs of spirit cranes, landing in the central square.
Before them stood a grand palace ornate beams, carved pillars, shimmering tiles—the residence of Peak Lord Xiaoyou.
As the master of Drunken Dust Peak, Xiaoyou lived in lavish surroundings. Even the floor of the main hall was paved with flawless white jade.
Though Xiaoyou himself was a rather broke sword cultivator, he happened to have a very wealthy disciple Master Jingxing, an array cultivator of immense means.
Jingxing was the richest person on the entire peak. His master was a sword cultivator, his senior sister a blade cultivator, and both poured every resource into their weapons, leaving the rest of the peak penniless.
Thanks to him, Drunken Dust Peak could still maintain some dignity.
Though Jingxing had long since reached the Divine Transformation stage, he still lived on the same peak rather than establishing one of his own. After all, Drunken Dust was spacious enough for all of them.
Lin Shanlai, however, had something heavy on his mind. The moment they reached the main hall, he asked his master:
“Master, has there been any progress in investigating the matter of the Gathering Evil Array?”
News traveled slowly among the disciples, and they only knew that many had been sent out to purge evil cultivators. The results, however, were unclear.
Instantly, the gossip expert Jin You perked up his ears.
“Quite a few strongholds of evil cultivators have been wiped out,” Xiaoyou said. “But the true source of those Gathering Evil Arrays hasn’t been found. The old monsters among the evil cultivators seemed to vanish overnight, like rats hiding in the dark. No one knows where they’ve gone.”
“Master, I wish to take on a mission to hunt down those evil cultivators,” Lin Shanlai said firmly.
He had always possessed a strong sense of justice even the reason his Golden Core had cracked before was because he’d risked everything to save someone from an evil cultivator’s hands.
Xiaoyou admired that fearless determination, but he shook his head.
“No rush. Stay by my side and train for a few more years first. That array was crafted with extreme precision it alters a cultivator’s body little by little. It’ll take at least fifty years for those infected to completely transform into bloodthirsty fiends. You have plenty of time to grow.”
Yan Jiuzhi, standing quietly nearby, knew that this was accurate.
In his previous life, the large-scale purge of demonized cultivators had indeed happened decades later. He had killed many back then most had already lost their sanity entirely. Those few who retained some shred of it were terrifyingly strong.
And those demonic cultivators… something about them had always seemed wrong. They were too fearless, too willing to die as if controlled by some unseen force.
Could it have been the work of the Demon Clan?
He’d suspected it before, but in his last life, he’d been alone, with limited information. Many truths had remained out of reach.
Still, whenever he encountered them, he never hesitated to kill.
“The Ten Great Sects have simply shifted their operation from open action to secrecy,” Xiaoyou continued. “They’re investigating whether demons have infiltrated our realm. Before long, you’ll all have your part to play.”
He paused, then added, “As for the human traffickers, you reported there’s been new progress. That Wang family concubine’s daughter was found to be colluding with a demonic cultivator. The man’s still missing, but she’s been locked in the Long Yue Sect’s Punishment Prison for now.”
Two people froze where they stood.
Both reborn. Both realized this didn’t happen in their past life.
Yan Jiuzhi and Wei Yutong frantically searched their memories there had been no such case before.
Many of these recent developments were things Wei Yutong had only learned about today. In her previous life, the great demon purge had occurred decades later.
But ever since she encountered Yan Jiuzhi at Tai Xian Sect, the flow of events had begun to change.
Could it be… that he, too, was reborn?
Her hands clenched at her sides, fingers curling into the fabric of her robes. Her lashes trembled slightly, hiding the turmoil in her eyes.
Had he already noticed something off about her?
After all, in their previous lives, she had been a disciple of Long Yue Sect, and they had crossed paths more than once.
Yan Jiuzhi, of course, had noticed.
From her mannerisms and her oddly precise cultivation choices, it wasn’t hard to tell.
In his previous life, when he had hunted down Xia Mengxue, he’d studied her entire circle of connections Wei Yutong included.
Wei Yutong had been the personal disciple of Xia Mengxue’s senior brother, and once, she’d even been pushed in front of a sword to take a blow meant for her master’s senior sister.
If he hadn’t altered his strike mid-attack, she would’ve died right there.
So, her switching sects in this life made perfect sense to him.
Tai Xian Sect was far superior to Long Yue Sect in every way—and most importantly, it didn’t have any lunatics like Xia Mengxue.
Well… apart from the fact that everyone here was a bit too fond of gossip.
Still, knowing his master and fellow disciples were thriving here put his mind at ease.
He only wanted to complete his sect trial as soon as possible, then return to those secret realms from his past life to seek breakthroughs.
But first… he glanced at his little junior sister. He’d have to make sure she had enough assignments to keep her busy for years.
Li Xi blinked up at him, innocent and wide-eyed, having no idea what kind of devious plans her third senior brother was hatching.
By mid-autumn, we’ll have the sect’s internal competition, Xiaoyou announced. “Use the next two months well. Go to the Deacon Hall to register your identity as direct disciples, then to the Transmission Hall to select your cultivation arts.
Those at Foundation Establishment can also try their luck, see if they’re chosen by any heaven-grade movement techniques.
Li Xi’s eyes sparkled with envy. She didn’t need to choose a main cultivation art, but she desperately wanted to learn a powerful movement skill.
Her uncles all moved like flashes of light unreachable. Sadly, that kind of training only opened up after reaching Foundation Establishment.
Tai Xian Sect valued survival above all else. Movement and footwork techniques were freely open to all disciples, inner and outer alike, regardless of rank.
If the art chose you, it didn’t matter what your status was you could learn it.
Once Foundation Establishment was achieved, disciples also got a chance to visit the Treasure Pavilion and test their fate. With a bit of luck, one might even gain a high-grade spiritual treasure as their life-bound artifact.
Yan Jiuzhi decided that once they picked their housing tomorrow, he’d head to the Transmission Hall. The sect’s movement techniques had fascinated him even in his previous life, he had never seen anyone move faster than a Tai Xian disciple.
The next morning, the group along with Elder Gao headed straight to the Deacon Hall.
As always, it was bustling. They got their disciple IDs, monthly allowances, and new uniforms before moving on to the housing selection.
A cheerful deacon disciple demonstrated various models using illusory projections.
Li Xi couldn’t help reaching out to touch one immediately, a two-story wooden house appeared, rotating in a full 360-degree display, interior and all.
“Wow~ This looks even more realistic than modern 4D imaging…” she whispered.
While most of them browsed through the standard free models, Jin You born into the sect and spoiled by it had already chosen his and was now busy customizing the interior.
He’d picked a courtyard-style house and was enthusiastically describing to the deacon how he wanted his forging room designed.
Li Xi gaped.
Doesn’t it already come with a forging room? Why waste extra contribution points?
That one’s too basic, Jin You replied proudly. I’m going all in no half-measures.
He slapped down two secondary identity plates on the counter with a flourish.
How could a genius like him settle for standard gear?
“Your contribution points are short by sixty-eight thousand two hundred,” the deacon informed him pleasantly. “Would you like to apply for installment credit?”
“Credit!” Jin You declared heroically, puffing out his chest.
“The balance must be repaid within three years,” the deacon said. “Should I split it evenly across both plates?”
“Split it!” he said generously. “My parents always share their debts fifty-fifty too!”
Everyone stared in disbelief.
Wait. Jin You you maxed out both your parents’ identity plates?
Do they even know?
Li Xi’s jaw nearly hit the floor. “You’re going to die when they get back…”
“Oh, relax!” Jin You waved her off. “They’re out on missions. Won’t be back anytime soon.”
The others just stared.
The deacon added cheerfully, “Foundation Establishment disciples may borrow up to forty thousand points. Golden Core disciples, eighty thousand. You’re all welcome to apply if you wish.”
Lin Shanlai and Gao Lang, both Golden Core cultivators, shook their heads rapidly.
No, no. Never.
Taking credit debts was not on the path to enlightenment.
And besides the free houses were already better than anything they’d ever lived in back at Yunxiao Sect.
