4: Picking Up a Little Milk Bun
If this office building hadn’t been built by the head office as a star company, Yu Qingjia suspected Yu Qingyi’s voice would have been heard by everyone on the floor.
Yu Qingyi realized her reaction was too strong and might discourage her sister. But then she thought, saying something as absurd as transitioning to a director, her sister really needed to rein in her impulsive nature. She was a married woman, how could she be so unreliable? Clearing her throat, she said, “Alright, stop messing around. Go home before Mom and Dad worry about you again.”
Without giving Yu Qingjia a chance to explain, Yu Qingyi stood and ushered her out.
Yu Qingjia didn’t bother arguing. Instead of wasting words, she’d make a short film to show Yu Qingyi her potential and seriousness.
After leaving the office, Yu Qingjia began planning what to shoot. After a moment’s thought, she decided to remake her college graduation project, which had won the Best Short Film award at an exhibition. Having honed her directing skills through several films, her abilities were far more refined than when she’d just graduated, and the work would surely be even better now.
With her plan set, Yu Qingjia eagerly returned home to write the script. As the elevator doors opened, she stepped in without looking and bumped her shin against something soft. Glancing down, she saw a panda cub sprawled on the elevator floor, its big, glossy black eyes looking up at her with a pitiful expression.
Yu Qingjia’s heart melted instantly, utterly charmed.
This wasn’t a panda cub, it was a little kid in a panda onesie!
Checking the elevator and seeing no one else, Yu Qingjia quickly helped the child up. “Little one, why are you alone?”
The little milk bun, knocked to the ground, was on the verge of tears. Hearing the pretty sister’s gentle, soothing voice, they sniffled, holding back tears, and looked up with big, grape-like eyes. Said in a sweet, baby voice, “I’m looking for Mommy.”
Worried the elevator doors might harm the child, Yu Qingjia scooped them up and set them outside.
“Where’s your mommy?” Yu Qingjia softened her voice. Perhaps it was her age, but she had no resistance to such adorable, soft creatures.
Yu Qingjia couldn’t fathom how anyone could let a child this small ride an elevator alone. They were barely tall enough to reach the buttons, how had they even gotten up here?
The little milk bun blinked its big eyes, studying Yu Qingjia curiously. Just as Yu Qingjia wondered if there was something on her face, the child said in a soft, sticky voice, “Mommy’s the boss. She’s working.”
The boss?
Yu Qingjia thought through the people at Xinghui who could be considered bosses. Besides Yu Qingyi, the others either had kids in college or high school. She pressed, “What’s your mommy’s name?”
The little milk bun, unafraid, flashed a super sweet smile, their milky voice extra adorable. “Yinyin. Mommy’s called Yinyin.”
At first, Yu Qingjia drew a blank, but then a face flashed through her mind, and she realized the child meant Ming Yin.
She recalled that in the novel, Ming Yin had a child, though the identity of the child’s… biological mother was unknown.
Yu Qingjia cringed at her behavior that day. How had she forgotten this detail and offered to “take responsibility”? According to the novel, Ming Yin was deeply devoted to the child’s biological mother and had no intention of finding another partner.
Looking at the little milk bun, so exquisitely cute with features resembling Ming Yin’s, Yu Qingjia felt a pang of emotion.
Such a good person, such an adorable child—how could they be the villain?
“Sister?” The little milk bun looked at her curiously.
Yu Qingjia, hearing the term, burst out laughing. The child giggled too, showing tiny white teeth, looking utterly adorable.
“Is your mommy named Ming Yin?” Yu Qingjia confirmed with a smile, reaching out to pinch the soft ears on the child’s hat.
So soft.
The little milk bun’s eyes lit up, nodding eagerly, the ears on their hat bouncing. “Mm-hmm, does Sister know Mommy?”
Yu Qingjia pulled out her phone to call Ming Yin, smiling at the child. “Of course I know her. She was just meeting with us.”
For some reason, though the little milk bun had met many pretty sisters, this one’s smile was especially lovely, and she really liked her.
Ming Yin answered quickly, her voice tinged with anxiety. “What’s the matter?”
Yu Qingjia got straight to the point. “I found a panda cub in the elevator on the 34th floor. Is it yours?”
The little milk bun, realizing “panda cub” referred to her, blushed adorably, lowering her head shyly and twisting her toes on the ground.
Yu Qingjia chuckled, then heard Ming Yin exhale in relief, her voice calming with a faint hint of amusement. “Yes, it’s mine. I’m coming up to get her.”
“No need, I’m heading down. I’ll bring her to you. Where are you?”
After arranging to meet in the parking lot, Yu Qingjia hung up and extended a hand to the little milk bun. “Let’s go find your mommy.”
Without hesitation, the child grabbed her finger. Her small hands were warm and soft, like a freshly baked cupcake—fluffy, chubby, and sweet.
During the elevator ride, Yu Qingjia and the little milk bun exchanged names. The child’s full name was Ming Shenli, nickname Zhizhi. Yu Qingjia guessed the child’s biological mother likely had the surname Shen and probably loved lychees. Though it was just her speculation, it didn’t stop her from marveling at Ming Yin’s deep devotion and rocky romantic path.
In the parking lot, Yu Qingjia immediately spotted the tall figure leaning against a black business car.
“Mommy!” The little milk bun cheered, rushing toward the figure. Ming Yin caught them effortlessly, smiling as she accepted a kiss from the child.
The warm, affectionate scene made Yu Qingjia smile unconsciously. But thinking of the novel’s ending—Ming Yin’s death in a car accident, the Ming family’s collapse, and the child’s unknown fate, made her brow furrowed.
“Zhizhi was naughty and slipped into the elevator while my assistant was in the restroom. Thank you, Miss Yu, for bringing her over.” Ming Yin said, holding the child and approaching Yu Qingjia. With her daughter in her arms, she exuded a gentle, serene aura, less sharp and professional than before.
The little milk bun, clinging to Ming Yin’s neck, chirped sweetly, “Thank you, Xiao Yu~”
Ming Yin tilted her head, looking calmly at her daughter. “No manners. Call her Auntie.”
The little milk bun pouted, aggrieved. “…Sister Xiao Yu.”
Ming Yin: …
“It’s fine, I’m forever eighteen.” Yu Qingjia said with a carefree laugh. It was just a nickname.
Seeing she genuinely didn’t mind, Ming Yin’s expression softened. In a warm voice, she said, “We’re leaving. What should you say?”
The little milk bun straightened up politely. “Thank you, Sister Xiao Yu. Bye-bye, Sister Xiao Yu.”
“Bye-bye, Xiao Lizhi.” Yu Qingjia played along happily, earning a softer look from Ming Yin.
Ming Yin nodded slightly. “We won’t disturb you further. Goodbye, Miss Yu.”
As Ming Yin carried the little milk bun toward the car, the child, perched on her shoulder, waved at Yu Qingjia, who returned a smile.
Ming Yin placed the little milk bun in the car seat, buckled them in, and closed the door. She nodded to Yu Qingjia before walking to the other side of the car.
Yu Qingjia finally looked away, heading to her own car.
The story wouldn’t follow the original plot, would it?
Thinking of the characters’ arcs and endings, Yu Qingjia paused.
She should prepare herself. She didn’t want to meet the original story’s fate, nor did she want the Yu family to suffer that outcome. And…
She glanced at the parking lot exit. Maybe she could befriend and collaborate with Ming Yin, helping herself and pulling Ming Yin up in the process.
Ming Yin had rivaled Shen Ru for so long, her strategies and vision nearly equal. Compared to Shen Ru, Ming Yin only lacked a protagonist’s aura.
Protagonist’s aura—
Yu Qingjia’s gaze turned thoughtful. In that case, she could befriend Pan Xing, the story’s protagonist, whose perspective drove the entire narrative.
And since she wanted to transition to directing while Pan Xing aimed to return to acting, wasn’t this the perfect opportunity to build a connection?
“Mommy…”
Ming Yin, in the middle of work, paused and turned to Zhizhi, asking gently, “What’s wrong?”
The child only called her “Mommy” so sweetly when she wanted something or had done something wrong. Normally, she called her “Yinyin.”
Zhizhi was nibbling her chubby finger. Ming Yin’s brows furrowed slightly, and Zhizhi quickly pulled her hand out, hiding it behind her back with a guilty, beaming smile. “Mommy~”
Ming Yin, both exasperated and amused, grabbed the little hand from behind her back and wiped the saliva off with a plain handkerchief. “Didn’t I tell you? Do not eat your fingers.”
Zhizhi nodded haphazardly. “Mm-hmm, hands are dirty. Eating them makes my tummy hurt.”
Ming Yin didn’t say more, folding the handkerchief after cleaning her hand. Zhizhi continued, “Mommy, Xiao Yu is so pretty.”
Knowing her little milk bun’s personality, Ming Yin didn’t wait for her to finish. “She’s not.”
Zhizhi’s tiny brows drooped, and even the ears on her hat sagged with disappointment. Her little voice was listless. “But, but she’s like me.”
Ming Yin thought of Yu Qingjia’s radiant, refined face and couldn’t see any resemblance to Zhizhi.
As if sensing her doubt, Zhizhi added, “We’re both very pretty! Super pretty!”
Ming Yin: …
Looking at Zhizhi’s confident little face, Ming Yin rubbed her head. “But she’s really not. And you can’t call her Xiao Yu, got it?”
Zhizhi nodded obediently. “Mm-hmm, I’m a polite, good baby. I’ll only call her Xiao Yu in front of Mommy.”
Ming Yin pursed her lips at this. It was great that Zhizhi was close to her, but she really needed to hire an etiquette teacher for her. Calling her “Yinyin” was one thing, but now calling someone else “Xiao Yu”? It was a bit rude.
As she considered whether a three-year-old needed an etiquette teacher, Ming Yin’s mind flashed to the image of Yu Qingjia holding Zhizhi’s hand as they approached. Her thoughts paused for a moment.
Zhizhi was right, she was pretty. Very pretty.
