- Episode 11 - I Became Friend With Chirikawa Chiharu
“Hey, Haruma-kun, what do you usually do on your days off?”
It was a sudden question.
After school, in our usual spot.
Next to the storage shed, in the quiet corner behind the old school building where the sunlight gently filters in. No one ever comes here. As usual, Shirakawa-senpai and I were sitting side by side.
“On my days off?”
Still holding a half-empty bottle of tea, I paused to think for a moment.
Honestly, there’s nothing worth mentioning.
If anything, the fact that “nothing ever happens” is the defining feature of my weekends. They’re uneventful, to the point of being monotonous.
“Not much, really… I just stay home playing games, watching videos, sleeping… stuff like that.”
“Ah, I knew it~.”
Senpai nodded knowingly, pursing her lips.
“What do you mean, ‘knew it’?”
“Well, you just give off major shut-in energy, you know?”
It didn’t exactly hurt to hear that, but being so casually understood kind of stung.
“Is it so wrong? I happen to like staying home.”
“Wrong! Absolutely wrong! Young man, that’s no good!”
“Young man? Seriously…?”
“As your older and wiser senpai, I insist—young people like you need to get out and breathe the fresh air!”
“I do breathe it. At school.”
“That’s not what I meant!”
She pointed a sharp finger at me.
“You’ve gotta get out sometimes and do things! Otherwise your sense of wonder will rust! You’re wasting your youth!”
“But I’m not really the type to hang out with people much…”
“Hmm… Then—your big sister will take you out into the world herself!”
“Wha—huh?”
The unexpected announcement nearly made my voice crack.
“So! Let’s go out together on your next day off, alright? Come on, say yes, say yes!”
She said it with a lighthearted smile, but her eyes were serious.
Her energy left no room for refusal—it was like the idea of saying no had never even occurred to her.
“Wait, but… me and you, Senpai?”
“Yup!”
“I mean… if people saw me hanging out with Shirakawa-senpai, they’d definitely talk…”
“Then we just don’t tell anyone~. A little secret between us isn’t so bad, right?”
“…Please don’t call it a secret. That just sounds weird.”
“Haha, just kidding!”
She laughed cheerfully.
Meanwhile, my heart had been racing nonstop. This was… this had to be a date, right? With that senpai?
“So! Let’s exchange contact info!”
“Huh?”
“Well, how else are we supposed to make plans? Come on, show me your phone!”
“…You’re serious?”
“Dead serious. No backing out.”
With that, Senpai pulled out her phone.
I hesitated, but eventually reached into my pocket, pulled out my phone, and brought up my QR code.
“Alright, scanning now~… beep.”
As soon as she scanned it, a message popped up: “You are now friends.”
“Yay! Now we’re officially friends, Haruma-kun!”
Senpai beamed with satisfaction.
“…I mean, I’m not the only one, right? You exchange contacts with lots of people, don’t you?”
The question slipped out before I could stop myself.
Senpai paused for a second, thinking, then quietly replied:
“I actually don’t have that many contacts. I’m probably not even connected with everyone in my class.”
“…Really?”
“Yep. I think of contact info as a doorway to a connection. It’s not something you should open carelessly.”
That was… unexpected.
Someone so cheerful, so popular, the kind of person who always had people calling out “Shirakawa-senpai!” wherever she went—
“So, I only exchange contact info with people I want to connect with. And I wanted to with you. Is that weird?”
“No, I mean… I’m happy. Just a little surprised, is all.”
“Right? But still, being called ‘unexpected’ kinda makes me feel itchy inside.”
She gave a playful grin.
I looked away from her smile, pretending to focus on my phone instead.
“You are now friends with Chiharu Shirakawa.”
The words on my screen felt unusually real.
Maybe our relationship had moved just a little beyond “secret hideout buddies.”
