- Episode 14 - Don't look away, don't panic
A Day Out with Chiharu-senpai.
Calling it a “date” felt too embarrassing, but there was no denying—it was a special day.
The meeting spot was a plaza outside a train station, about three stops away from our school.
It was probably Chiharu-senpai’s way of making sure we wouldn’t run into anyone from school.
Before meeting her, I ducked into the station restroom to check my appearance in the mirror one last time.
Not too flashy, but definitely a version of me that was a little different from usual.
“Alright…”
I took a deep breath and stepped out of the restroom.
My steps toward the platform were light, almost like I might start skipping without realizing it.
I passed through the ticket gate and boarded the train. It wasn’t too crowded—just enough room to find a seat.
Noticing my reflection in the window, I saw that I was grinning. I quickly forced my face back to neutral.
Then, my phone buzzed in my pocket.
It was from my sister.
“Dear little brother, sorry to interrupt your air-breathing excursion, but if by chance you do end up meeting a girl, make sure to compliment her outfit. Got it? This is non-negotiable.”
“…She totally knows.”
I let out a wry laugh and tightened my grip on the phone.
Another message followed:
“How to compliment her:
1. Don’t blurt it out randomly
2. Don’t look away
3. Don’t panic.
You always panic.”
I nearly burst out laughing and had to cover my mouth to keep it in.
Seriously… what is my sister?
But still, in moments like this, her advice was kind of comforting.
I put my phone away, took another deep breath, and looked out the window.
My stop was coming up.
Once I arrived at the station and climbed the stairs, I spotted her right away.
Even in a crowd, she stood out—elegant and warm at the same time.
There was Chiharu-senpai.
She wore a light beige one-piece dress with a thin, spring cardigan draped over her shoulders.
Her hair was softly curled and fluttered gently in the breeze.
She’d even applied a little lipstick, I think.
She looked different than usual—more grown-up.
“…Sorry to keep you waiting.”
I called out, my voice a bit stiff with nerves.
Chiharu-senpai turned around quickly.
“Oh—Haruma-kun! Morning!”
Her usual cheerful tone. Somehow, that instantly put me at ease.
“Good morning.”
There was a pause, and then I remembered my sister’s advice.
Say it. Don’t look away. Don’t panic.
“Um… your outfit today… it really suits you.”
I spoke slowly, like I was savoring each word.
Chiharu-senpai blinked, seemingly caught off guard for a second—but then, a playful smile spread across her face.
“Huh? What was that? Didn’t quite catch it~! Mind saying it again?”
“Wha—uh, no, I mean… your outfit… really suits you!”
I felt my face heat up as I raised my voice slightly to repeat myself.
She laughed brightly and patted my shoulder.
“Nice job, young man! This older girl is touched! You’ve got a good sense of a girl’s heart!”
“N-No, thank you…”
(Yep. Totally panicking. Sorry, Sis…)
But still, I was glad I said it.
“Still, Haruma-kun—you look really cool today too!”
She praised me out of nowhere, and I froze in place.
“…Huh?”
“Your outfit. It’s simple but stylish. Really suits you. I mean… it kind of made my heart skip a beat.”
She wasn’t teasing—she said it straight, looking me right in the eyes.
Her gaze was so direct, it made me want to hide from it.
“Th-Thank you… very much…”
My voice was barely above a whisper by that point.
(Thank you, Sis… really… thank you…)
“Well then, young man—shall we?”
“…Can you please stop calling me that?”
“What? But it’s cute~! Totally fits you today, Haruma-kun. Young man!”
“…Sigh.”
Bantering like that, we started walking through the plaza together.
Our destination: the movie theater.
I didn’t know how today would turn out—
But somehow, it felt like… a brand-new world was just beginning.
