I Am Her Secret Beauty and Strong Alpha (GL) - Chapter 6
“…I’ve imagined her kneeling before me on one knee so many times, but in every version, she’s proposing to me, not applying some ointment.”
“In my imagination, if she’s sincere enough, if the proposal is grand enough, I might reluctantly say yes. It’s not entirely out of the question.”
“She’s right in front of me but doesn’t recognize me… Well, I guess that’s still better than not seeing her at all.”
Nan Xi muttered gloomily, sitting across from Dr. Zhang, who frowned in deep thought as if facing a major dilemma.
Nan Xi spoke quickly, like pouring out all the bitterness she had kept inside.
Dr. Zhang didn’t dare interrupt her or chime in. He could only wait until she paused to take a sip of water before he cautiously asked,
“So, Miss Nan, the friend you recently reunited with might be experiencing symptoms of amnesia?”
They were still sitting in the Nan family’s greenhouse garden, just the two of them face to face.
Mu Xi had arranged a table and two chairs in the center of the garden, then left with the others to give the doctor and his patient some privacy.
“Yes.” Nan Xi took the cup and drank; the water was still warm—Mu Xi had just had someone pour it for her. “She doesn’t remember anything.”
Her tone carried a tinge of sadness, but quickly turned sharp again: “Doctor, why do people lose their memory?”
“Well, I’m not a specialist in that field, but I can give you some general answers,” Dr. Zhang wiped the sweat from his forehead. “Brain injury is the most common cause. Besides that, diseases or severe emotional trauma can also lead to memory loss.”
Nan Xi mulled over his words, comparing each possibility in her mind.
Soon, her palms began to sweat, and she became visibly uneasy.
Dr. Zhang immediately noticed the change and gently asked, “Is there something that worries you?”
“If… I mean if,” Nan Xi lifted her eyes to meet his, “if she wants to forget, then…?”
“The human mind is strange and powerful,” Dr. Zhang said. “If her desire to forget was strong enough—so strong that it affected her mental and physical health—it could certainly manifest as memory loss.”
As soon as he said that, Nan Xi’s expression darkened even more, seemingly struck by his answer.
Dr. Zhang was well aware that he was the Nan family’s in-house psychologist. His primary purpose today was to help Nan Xi, not the person suffering from amnesia.
His job was to guide Nan Xi through the release of her negative emotions and improve her mental state through their session.
He looked across at the young woman, born into wealth and privilege.
She had been well cared for—elegant in appearance, materially secure, healthy in both body and mind. He had just conducted a few basic psychological tests, which showed that although Nan Xi was currently troubled by negative emotions, she was still fundamentally optimistic, with a bright future ahead.
The current melancholy was only temporary, making her brow furrow and her complexion dim. Someone like her would be relatively easy to console.
“Miss Nan, you don’t need to dwell too much on this,” Dr. Zhang said warmly. “What’s most important is that you’ve reunited.”
Nan Xi’s tired eyes showed a flicker of confusion. Her hair slid down her neck and shoulder as she lifted her head slightly.
“What?”
“When a patient suffers from memory loss, aside from the patient themselves, it’s often the loved ones who suffer the most. In these situations, they usually choose to accompany and care for the patient, waiting for the spark of memory to return.”
Dr. Zhang smiled gently, “But even if the treatment isn’t successful, many patients are still able to build new relationships with the people around them—because they already love each other deeply.”
Already… love each other…
That sentence struck Nan Xi like a bolt of lightning. Her red lips parted slightly, as if suddenly enlightened.
“You’re right,” she murmured. “What’s done is done, and the opportunity is in front of me. I should think of a way…”
Dr. Zhang nodded in satisfaction.
It seemed their session was about to wrap up smoothly.
“A way to make her fall in love with me all over again—madly, hopelessly. And then I’ll dump her, hard, so she can feel the pain I went through…”
“Yeah, I’ll make her wish she were dead at least once…”
Dr. Zhang: “?”
“Wait a moment, Miss Nan. That’s not the kind of—”
Dr. Zhang stared in disbelief, trying to talk her down. But Nan Xi had already stood up, walked around the table, and held his hand sincerely.
“I totally understand now, thank you, Dr. Zhang.”
With that, Nan Xi swirled her skirt and left the greenhouse, leaving Dr. Zhang behind in a daze.
She understands?
That doesn’t seem right. Was there no test earlier for dark tendencies?
Or was she just joking?
…If Nan Xi really does something unethical or crazy, please don’t say it was because of his advice!
Dr. Zhang sat frozen, and soon the housekeeper Mu Xi walked over holding a document and sat in the seat Nan Xi had just vacated.
Her professional smile was as flawless as ever, forming a stark contrast in Dr. Zhang’s eyes with Nan Xi’s earlier gloom and darkness—like a radiant sun cutting through the clouds.
But her purpose was anything but sunny.
“Dr. Zhang, we have a contract here that requires your signature.” Mu Xi kindly placed a pen beside him, the tip pointing toward him. “You must agree not to disclose any details regarding Miss Nan Xi’s consultation. The consequences are listed here—please read them carefully.”
Dr. Zhang knew full well: wealthy people’s biggest fear was privacy leaks.
He signed swiftly, but even afterward remained distracted, concerned about the not-so-successful counseling session.
Eventually, Dr. Zhang made up his mind and said to Mu Xi, “Please also inform Miss Nan’s family. It would be best if they spent more time with her and showed more care.”
Mu Xi was surprised. “Is Miss Nan’s psychological issue that serious?”
If so, she’d need to adjust Nan Xi’s entire wellness plan—her schedule, diet, social circle…
“Not exactly,” Dr. Zhang replied. “It’s more about the safety of the people around her.”
With that cryptic remark, Dr. Zhang stood up, tucked his briefcase under his arm, and left the greenhouse—and the Nan residence.
Mu Xi escorted him to the gate. On her way back to the house, she wondered how much Nan Xi’s psychological state might involve her personally.
…She had a nagging feeling she might be in trouble. But she really liked this job—though exhausting, the pay was amazing. How could she make sure she didn’t lose it?
Dr. Zhang said to communicate with Nan Xi’s family. As a professional, his advice had to be taken seriously.
Mu Xi glanced up at the westering sun. Nan Xi’s physical checkup and counseling had taken up the entire afternoon. Soon, Nan Zhiya and Nan Nan would be home.
Nan Lian was away on a business trip, and Guan Yan was out on a field assignment. So she would update the family members who were present.
She remembered passing by the living room earlier and catching Nan Xi’s gaze.
That strange blend of calm, obsession, and inner struggle… maybe she really did have some psychological issues after all.
Ten minutes later, Nan Nan arrived home. Thirty minutes after that, Nan Zhiya also returned.
As the head of the household, Nan Zhiya was welcomed with great enthusiasm by the house staff. As her car entered the garden, Mu Xi began directing the servants to bring out the dishes and prepare the table, waiting for Nan Zhiya to lift the lids herself.
As Nan Zhiya passed Mu Xi, she casually asked, “How did things go today?”
She was a powerful alpha woman—commanding, sharp, unstoppable. Decades of success had sharpened her intuition and judgment to a level Mu Xi deeply admired.
“Everything in the house was fine,” Mu Xi said. “Except—after dinner, I have some updates on Miss Nan Xi I’d like to share with you.”
Nan Zhiya immediately paused and turned to look at her, silent.
She was actually shorter than Mu Xi, but her commanding aura made even an upward glance feel overpowering.
Her features were sharp and well-maintained. The few fine lines on her face did not diminish her noble aura. Mu Xi believed her beauty came less from her looks and more from the strong sense of pride and confidence in her eyes.
“Understood,” Nan Zhiya replied, then resumed walking.
Upon entering the living room and seeing her children, the stern lines on her face softened visibly. She slung her arms around their shoulders and guided them to the dining table, chatting casually about the day’s events.
Nan Xi sat with a relaxed posture, occasionally exchanging playful banter with Nan Nan. Though they hadn’t seen each other in five years, they’d quickly rekindled their sibling bond.
Mu Xi followed behind them, wondering: How could these two ever end up fighting to the death and tearing the family apart?
Was the real family drama going to come from the eldest sister, Nan Lian?
She couldn’t quite remember the plot of that book anymore—otherwise, she wouldn’t be this confused right now.
During dinner, Mu Xi stood behind Nan Zhiya, ready to refill their wine or clear the dishes, all the while listening to their conversation.
There was no rule against speaking at the Nan family table. Nan Xi took the initiative to mention her checkup earlier: “The doctor said I’m a bit frail, but overall healthy.”
“That’s great,” Nan Nan said excitedly. “Now I don’t have to worry. When I get some time off, I’ll take you out to have some fun.”
Nan Xi rolled her eyes elegantly. “I’ve got experiments to do. I don’t have time to go play with you.”
Nan Zhiya said, “Your research is important, but you should still get out more.”
She calmly sliced her meat. Her demeanor with family was entirely different from how she treated Mu Xi and the staff—softer, more patient, and warm.
She reserved her harshness for her employees—filling Mu Xi’s schedule to the brim—but wouldn’t allow Nan Xi to spend even one extra hour in the lab.
Orphaned and raised alone, Mu Xi found herself quietly enjoying this warm family atmosphere, even feeling a subtle happiness. She moved more nimbly while serving dishes, unaware she might soon be caught in the crossfire.
Nan Xi nodded thoughtfully, agreeing that Nan Zhiya had a point.
But she still said, “Then I don’t want to go out with Nan Nan.”
“Who do you want to go with?”
Nan Xi smiled slightly and pointed behind Nan Zhiya—
“I want the housekeeper, Mu Xi, to take me out.”
