▽ Episode 12: A Laugh Without a Cat
It seems that by defeating the Rank III Hero Goblin, I was able to reach the level cap.
The experience efficiency is totally different from hunting something of the same Rank.
Maybe it’s also because I crossed a life-or-death line. Fights on the edge bring more experience.
I was already close to the level cap.
Then, I was found by the Goblins and ended up getting attacked.
Just a little more, and I would’ve evolved—but I got greedy.
During the fight, I defeated the Hobgoblins. And with that, I evolved.
Now then.
It’s the evolution I’ve been looking forward to.
That said, I lost a valuable chance to take my time picking.
Because I picked the absolutely strong Sky Cat without hesitation.
Maybe I lost some interesting choices…
But—it couldn’t be helped.
There was no room for thinking in that moment. And getting killed for picking something weird would’ve been the worst.
Let’s just focus now on the new possibilities.
There are four options:
-
- Flying Cat
A cat specialized in flight. Rank II
-
- Freestyle Cat
A mischievous cat that controls space. Rank III
-
- Magic Lion
A lion striving to master magic. Rank II
-
- Venom Leopard
A fearsome leopard that controls poison. Rank III
So that’s what it comes down to.
Surprisingly, there’s a future branching out from cat to the feline family.
But for now, I like being a cat.
A small body is easier to hide and escape with.
With a body that can’t hide, no matter how strong you are, you’ll get exhausted and die from back-to-back fights.
So the last two are rejected.
They seem strong, sure. But I’m living in the now.
Now then, about the first two.
But honestly, I felt like there’s no point in agonizing over this.
About flying—I don’t rate it that highly.
Why? Even if a cat could fly—
I just don’t think I could beat creatures that are specialized in flying from the start.
If I could make the skies my main battlefield, I might be unbeatable against enemies that can’t fly—but I don’t think I could beat other flying enemies.
So I chose this thing called Freestyle Cat.
Another reason: it just looked like an upper version of Sky Cat.
Name: [Unset] Gender: [Male]
Species: [Freestyle Cat] Level: [1 (15)]
Unique Skill: [Choice Link]
Species Skill: [Wonder Time (A Laugh Without a Cat)], [Spatial Magic・Intermediate]
Inherited Skill: [Charm], [Instinct Detection], [Quick Escape], [Invite Fortune],
[Survival Growth・Slight], [Fire Magic・Beginner], [Water Magic・Beginner],
[Wind Magic・Beginner], [Earth Magic・Beginner], [White Magic・Beginner],
[Spatial Magic・Beginner], [Magic Talent・Small]
Abilities: [Strong Poison Fang III], [Agility IX], [Strong Paralysis Claw III], [Cry I]
A lot of things changed.
The most noticeable change was probably—the wings on my back disappeared.
Kinda sad. They were very fantasy-like.
It’s probably because I didn’t inherit [Flight・Slight].
What I inherited was [Spatial Magic・Beginner].
Clearly, that was the more useful one. And its usability was better too.
I still feel potential in flying though.
About the inherited skill I didn’t recognize—
It’s the species skill from Sky Cat, which I was only in for a moment.
It’s called [Magic Talent・Small].
And this one is pretty amazing.
I once said the number of spells you can learn depends on talent.
This seems to be a skill that compensates for that talent.
Some spells I hadn’t been able to learn—
I can now use them.
Especially [White Magic], which I previously only had one type of—
Now I can use three.
A spell that closes wounds,
A spell that enchants with holy attributes,
And a spell that enhances natural healing power—these three.
I had been wanting recovery magic.
So increasing natural healing is a good thing.
Also, for [Space Magic・Beginner], which I originally had decent talent in—
I can now use the entire lineup.
I gained two new types:
-
- [Apport]
Summon owned/equipped items to your hand. Range depends on magic attack power.
-
- [Change]
Switches position with an approved living creature. Range depends on magic attack power, and consumes a lot of MP.
For someone like me, who owns nothing and has no allies—
They’re useless spells.
But—it’s still better to have them than not.
Especially for [Apport], I can already think of lots of ways to use it.
And there’s more good news about [Magic Talent・Small].
It seems that both my magic attack power and MP amount have increased.
This must mean that a buff is applied to all things related to using magic.
This is what talent is.
Whether you have it or not makes a huge difference in how strong you are as a magic user.
If I get another chance to inherit a talent in the future, I definitely want to get it.
“Nyaon.”
I’m also curious about the new species skill, [Wonder Time (A Laugh Without a Cat)].
The source is probably the Cheshire Cat from Alice in Wonderland.
That one, if you think about it, is also a space-magic-using cat, right?
It appears and disappears and such.
I don’t understand why Alice in Wonderland would exist in this world.
Once copyrights expire, do settings start being used even in other worlds? Or maybe this isn’t even another world……..…
Well, there’s no point in thinking about it.
“Nyao Nyao ([Wonder Time])..”
I activate it.
Then, my body turns transparent—except for my mouth.
I can tell that my MP is gradually being drained.
I jump onto a nearby tree branch on instinct.
I tilt my head.
What’s happening here?
Is this half-transparent effect really a species skill?
If so, I wouldn’t inherit it…
And then it happened.
While I was absorbed in testing, an arrow shot by a small Goblin hit me.
For some reason, [Instinct Detection] didn’t react.
Just as I started to panic, thinking the enemy must have some kind of skill like that—
The arrow passed right through my body and stuck into the tree.
A dull *thunk* echoed between me and the Goblin.
“Nya…a.”
A skill that erases hit detection.
Isn’t this just a totally cheat-level ability?
And since I was able to stand on a tree branch, that means I can maintain hit detection in only certain parts.
For example, if I forcefully land a hit with [Strong Poison Fang], I can hide like this and always win.
A chill runs through me.
What kind of power have I obtained…?
As I am now, I can definitely maintain this [Wonder Time] for five whole minutes.
A pseudo-invincibility for five minutes.
Is this what Rank III strength means?
At the very least, I don’t think the Hero Goblin had any ability this crazy.
……Though, there is a possible explanation.
That’s my unique skill.
Even [Instinct Detection], which boasts an incredible level of precision, can’t see the details of [Choice Link].
It might be affecting this.
My theory is that this unique skill lets me “choose my evolution path.”
And that also applies to skills.
In other words, a normal Freestyle Cat might not be able to obtain [Poison Fang] or [Poison Claw] through skill evolution.
Just a cat with a strong bite.
If so, it’s weak.
Just a kitty that can turn invincible.
If it can’t even use elemental magic besides [Spatial Magic], then—
That explains why it’s stuck at just Rank III despite having such an amazing ability.
While thinking that over, I killed the Goblin that had fired the arrow.
