▽ Episode 17: VS Crazy Dog
I’m being chased by Crazy Dog.
If I bite, disease is transmitted. And if I get bitten, disease is also transmitted.
I don’t have enough firepower to kill it with magic.
My Freestyle Cat is a species specialized in MP. And its magic attack power itself isn’t that high. Well, that’s by Rank III standards, though.
But I do have a plan to kill it.
Crazy Dog is a one-hit-kill type species. If it bites, it kills in one blow. Even scratching adds poison — that much I’ve figured out by observing how they hunt.
Its style is similar to mine.
Its agility is also high.
However, there is no enemy with perfect stats in Rank III. Its physical toughness is only so-so, and its physical attack power is also low.
As for magic, it’s just that my firepower is too low.
It’s about time I want a mid-level offensive spell.
If that’s the case,
Then I just have to kill it physically.
“Nyao ([Enchant Air]).”
One of the wind attribute magic.
It wraps wind around your weapon, claws, or fangs. It’s not just normal wind, it’s like a wind blade. A magic that gives slicing power.
“Nyao”
『Woof woof woof woof woof woof woof woof woof woof woof woof woof woof woof woof woof woof woof woof woof woof woof woof woof woof woof woof woof woof woof woof woof woof』
It’s really scary how it barks in a steady, rhythmic pattern.
If I take even one hit, I’ll die.
The opponent is faster than me. But what I have going for me is that I’m not crazy.
I turn around.
Even though Crazy Dog should have been caught off guard, it tries to bite without showing any sign of it. Its bite is a big, wide attack full of openings.
I can dodge this.
The dog, like crazy, keeps trying to bite at random. I want to believe it won’t hit. But just in case, I deploy [Dimension Wall].
Crazy Dog’s head smashes into the invisible wall.
It’s too dumb to notice the wall exists. It keeps smashing its face into the invisible wall.
…….…It’s dumber than I thought.
I surround the enemy with [Dimension Wall].
The strength of this magic is still kind of unknown.
I’ll need to test it later.
Anyway, with Crazy Dog’s low physical attack power, it still can’t break through.
“Nyan ([Dimension Strike]).”
I slash Crazy Dog with my claws.
The wind enchantment helps, and its flesh was easier to cut than I expected. I slash it up. It seems to have paralysis resistance and doesn’t get paralyzed. But that doesn’t matter.
I just cut it to death normally.
After more than twenty slashes, Crazy Dog finally goes limp. Just like that, it died from bl00d loss.
I wash my claws clean with water magic.
Just in case, I burn my claws with [Enchant Fire].
I don’t take damage myself, but it should at least do some high-heat sterilization.
My [Instinct Detection] isn’t reacting. So I don’t really think I needed to go that far, though.
[Skill level has reached its limit.]
[Please select an evolution path.]
So it seems that [Strong Paralysis Claw] is going to evolve.
It was super useful in the last fight, so I guess it’s natural that it would evolve.
Let’s take a look.
-
- [Strong Paralysis Strong Claw]
Powerful paralysis and powerful scratching attacks.
-
- [Paralysis Slash Claw]
Attack with sharp claws. Inflicts paralysis.
-
- [Poison Paralysis Claw]
Scratching attack that inflicts poison and paralysis.
-
- [Thunder Claw]
Scratch with lightning attribute claws. Lightning sometimes causes paralysis.
…What the heck.
I find number 4 very attractive… but it clearly doesn’t match my build.
Let’s properly look from number 1.
If I don’t calmly pick my evolution path, someone like me will immediately make a fatal mistake.
Since I understand that I’m an idiot, that makes me a slightly better idiot.
-
- [Strong Paralysis Strong Claw]
This is a choice that takes the best parts. The paralysis gets stronger, and the claw’s power stays the same.
It might seem like a halfway measure, but for various reasons, it’s the top candidate.
It also increases the targets that paralysis works on.
-
- [Paralysis Slash Claw]
Purely increases slashing power.
[Strong Paralysis Strong Claw] makes it slightly more effective against paralysis resistance and expands the range, but this one increases the number of targets you can cut and expands the range of paralysis.
Also, like in the previous battle, it’s useful against enemies that aren’t affected by paralysis.
-
- [Poison Paralysis Claw]
As for this… it might be meh.
I mean, if it keeps evolving, it might become [Paralysis Silence Instant Death Disease Demon Poison Confusion Claw] or something. But still…………
For now, I’ll keep paralysis and poison separate.
Rejected.
And then, number 4 — [Thunder Claw].
This is the problem.
My basic concept is: “Stop the enemy’s movement with claws or magic, then finish with poison fangs.” Because of that, claws with paralysis effects are very useful. And I’m convinced they’re the core of my build.
If it becomes [Thunder Claw], the paralysis effect will weaken.
It says “rarely causes paralysis,” but I don’t know how rare that is. At the very least, it would be inferior to claws specialized purely in causing paralysis.
“Nyao”
However, in terms of pure combat power, [Thunder Claw] is superior.
Claws wrapped in lightning are definitely strong.
Maybe it’s because the first enemy I fought was an Electric Bird — electricity kind of gives that unbeatable vibe. It’s like an enemy you can’t win against in a normal fight.
Back then too, I had no choice but to kill it with a rock.
What should I do.
Rationally speaking, if I’m going to pick [Thunder Claw], [Paralysis Slash Claw] is better. At least for my combat style.
But my instincts want [Thunder Claw].
It’s like… I can see an image of becoming stronger. ……I’ve been helped by my [Instinct Detection] up until now.
To protect the life saved by the mother cat, I’ve relied on [Instinct Detection] many times.
Rationally, it’s [Paralysis Slash Claw].
But… what comes to mind are things like the “Monty Hall problem” or “the probability of two people in a class sharing the same birthday” — math where the answer differs from your intuition.
I followed my instinct.
