▽ Episode 4: Black Magic
I open my eyes.
Reflexively looking up at the sky, the position of the sun’s light hasn’t changed. It seems I wasn’t unconscious. Apparently, I succeeded in evolving.
“Nyaa,” I let out a relieved sound.
My tail is wagging unconsciously—there’s no stopping it anymore.
It was close.
Most likely, going through evolution fully restores something like HP. But one part of my vision is missing. Since the eyeball still exists, it seems only the eyesight didn’t come back.
That’s enough.
Life energy is overflowing. I murmur “status” in cat language.
Name: [Unset] Gender: [Male]
Species: [Mill Cat (Black)] Level: [1 (5)]
Unique Skill: [Choice Link]
Species Skill [Black Magic・Beginner], [Invite Fortune]
Inherited Skill: [Charm], [Instinct Detection], [Quick Escape]
Abilities: [Bite III], [Trap Creation I]
I’ve definitely become stronger.
Also, it seems I can now check my level, which I couldn’t see before. That’s fortunate. And, thanks to evolving, I’ve gained something that looks interesting called [Black Magic].
It was a choice made unconsciously.
There might have been other options like Mill Cat (White) or Mill Cat (Red). Unfortunately, since I’ve already evolved, it might be difficult to become another color now.
Still, the line of sight feels higher.
It seems I’ve become an adult cat. Kittens are cute, but they’re not fit for survival in the wild.
It looks like my color also turned black. Though I haven’t seen it yet.
Still, this [Invite Fortune], huh?
I’ve heard people say black cats are symbols of misfortune. Like, “Bad luck for those who are passed by a black cat,” and such.
But maybe that’s because “a cat who is a symbol of happiness passed by,” or something.
I don’t really know. But if it’s a good power, then that’s fine.
“…Nyaa—”
First, I’ll try this [Black Magic・Beginner] thing.
But I don’t understand how to use it… No, that wasn’t the case. The moment I obtained the skill, I knew how to use this power.
I focus power around my belly and mutter the words that appear in my mind.
“Nyaa ([Dark Mist]).”
Ahead of my gaze, a black mist appears.
This magic, [Dark Mist], seems to generate a black mist within a designated area. It has no lethal power, but it might be a convenient spell.
My MP decreased just a little.
I don’t know my total MP. But with this [Dark Mist], I feel like I can still cast it about nine more times.
Other than that, I acquired four more spells.
Apparently, the species skill [Black Magic・Beginner] gives a random number and types of beginner-level black magic. They were chosen based on talent, from a group of about a dozen.
That’s the information my senses provided.
Seems like I don’t have much talent.
Out of the dozen or so types, I only learned five spells.
……..
Now that I’ve become stronger, that’s good and all, but the essential survival war is still ongoing. For now, the water issue seems to be resolved.
Next is food.
And also securing a safe place to sleep. Well, in this forest, safety probably doesn’t exist.
I wander through the forest.
My [Instinct Detection] is a skill that lets my instincts tell me about the surroundings. The definition of detection is broad—it can tell whether a plant is edible or not, for example.
I can also somewhat tell enemy positions and threat levels.
But even if it’s a weak monster, if it has poison or something, I’d probably die. I must be careful. As I wander cautiously through the forest, I finally find some edible fruit.
It’s high up in a tree.
But with a cat’s physical abilities, I should be able to get it. I jumped, but couldn’t reach. So this time, I dig my claws into the bark and climb all the way up.
I bite directly into the fruit.
Delicious. A sweet fruit. It doesn’t seem fully ripe yet, but it’s already this sweet. It looks like a tomato. But the taste is more like a strawberry.
I can get some water too.
“…………Nyaa (Let’s rest for today).”
After climbing the tall tree, sudden fatigue washed over me. It might be mental exhaustion too. Maybe, thanks to my cat instincts, I felt safe once I reached a high place.
I close my eyes.
I fell asleep.
