Episode 5: Evolution
▽ Episode 5: Evolution
I spent quiet days.
I became able to hunt. I use [Dark Mist] from afar, then assault the prey once their movements stop.
With a high-level [Bite] skill, I can kill weak creatures in one blow.
I was also able to eat meat.
I didn’t use fire, so I’m worried… but eating meat or not makes a huge difference in energy. I’ve given up on fire.
Even human professionals can’t make fire without the right conditions.
At the very least, I don’t think I can encounter fire with a cat’s limbs. Next, I want to evolve into something that can create fire.
Right now, my status looks like this:
Name: [Unset] Gender: [Male]
Species: [Mill Cat (Black)] Level: [3 (5)]
Unique Skill: [Choice Link]
Species Skill [Black Magic・Beginner], [Invite Fortune]
Inherited Skill: [Charm], [Instinct Detection], [Quick Escape]
Abilities: [Bite IV], [Trap Creation II]
The [Bite] skill has increased by one level, and the species level reached 3. This is the result of having hunted Goblins several times.
Goblins I had such a hard time with—now I can kill them steadily.
That much, [Black Magic] has been useful.
But.
I want to evolve soon. I don’t know when a powerful enemy might attack again. The strongest enemy I’ve encountered in this forest is the Electric Bird.
It was an enemy I killed only by chance.
Even now, I think I’d lose if I met it again. Even such a strong monster was desperately eating maggots that grew on a corpse—such is this forest.
…Can’t I escape?
They say stray cats live an average of four years. Maybe I can somehow become a house cat or break out of this stray lifestyle.
A home.
I need a home. And a stable life. If I could do farming or something, that’d be perfect.
Since I’m alive, I want to try experiencing that thing called “slow life”.
I’ve found a goal.
To live four years. For that, I need a home. To build or acquire a home……. I need to become stronger.
For now, I’ll keep hunting Goblins.
Let’s raise my level.
……..
And one week later. I had reached the level cap. I kept hunting Goblins all the time. At night, I sleep on top of trees with traps set up all around.
During the day, I hide and kill isolated Goblins.
I can use [Dark Mist] fifteen times in one go. That means I can kill ten Goblins without getting hurt.
But I saved five uses of [Dark Mist] for escape purposes.
The MP I used recovers at a rate of about one [Dark Mist] per hour. If I sleep, it fully recovers. Because of this MP usage, leveling up took several days.
The new evolution options are these four:
- Invite Fortune Cat
A cat that governs luck. Poor physical and combat ability, but loved by fate. Can also bless others.
- Little Witch’s Servant
A black kitten that serves a witch. Skilled in disease magic and black magic.
- Mill Cat (Pure)
A pure breed of Mill Cat with all kinds of potential.
- Unlucky Black Cat
A black cat that brings misfortune.
A troubling choice.
This supplementary information came from my [Instinct Detection]—vague information. My instincts say, “It’s probably like this.”
It’s such an all-purpose skill.
Actually, I think the reason Mill Cats can survive in this forest is because of this [Instinct Detection]. The stronger I get, the more accurate and deeper the things my instincts teach me.
Let’s think about the evolution options.
About Invite Fortune Cat.
Luck—an amazing and vague stat—would increase drastically. That kind of skill must be obtainable. Since it’s something I can’t control freely, the concept of raising luck is attractive.
About Little Witch’s Servant.
Apparently, I’d go back to being a kitten.
Being skilled in disease and black magic sounds interesting. But focusing only on black magic, when I haven’t even seen other kinds yet, feels too early.
More importantly, there’s no witch to serve. That cuts the charm in half.
About Mill Cat (Pure).
All kinds of potential… I’m curious. Sounds interesting. But potential doesn’t necessarily mean it’s good. Well, linguistically, people say “potential” is used only for good things, but that kind of rule is vague these days. Who’s even following it anymore?
By the way, when it’s a bad possibility, just call it a “concern” and it works out fine.
About Unlucky Black Cat.
If I can make the other party unlucky, then good. But I feel like I’d get unlucky too, and I don’t like that. Actually, it’s scary. So, I reject that.
……..
After much thought, I evolved into Mill Cat (Pure).
Or rather, it was a de-evolution.
Apparently, the Mill Cat (Pure) is an adult Mill Cat with no particular characteristics. My current status has become like this:
Name: [Unset] Gender: [Male]
Species: [Mill Cat (Pure)] Level: [1 (3)]
Unique Skill: [Choice Link]
Species Skill [Survival Growth・Slight]
Inherited Skill: [Charm], [Instinct Detection], [Quick Escape], [Invite Fortune]
Abilities: [Bite IV], [Trap Creation II]
This is it.
It’s just a feeling, but my physical ability seems to have slightly decreased. Also, my MP amount has drastically reduced when it comes to magic.
Finally, I can no longer use [Black Magic].
Even when I do the same things I did when I remembered it, the magic doesn’t activate. It feels like the switch is stuck.
That’s because I didn’t inherit [Black Magic].
It was a useful skill. But I couldn’t help being curious about [Invite Fortune]. The idea of increasing luck felt like something I’d regret not keeping when the time came.
I don’t really feel the effect.
Even so, I was scared to lose it. If someone told you “your luck will disappear,” wouldn’t you get scared?
But I had completely relied on [Black Magic] to level up. Losing it might be dangerous.
Maybe I acted too soon…
As I was agonizing over that, I found a Goblin caught in a trap in front of me. I bit through its neck with my usual routine.
[[Bite] skill has leveled up.]
[[Bite] has reached its level cap.]
[Skill evolution is now possible.]
“!”
I wonder if it’s the effect of [Invite Fortune].
