▽ Final Chapter: The Cat God’s Slumber
How many hundreds of years has it been since I became Rank XI, I wonder.
The first hundred years were too turbulent. Even now they are unforgettable memories.
About Mother Cat.
About the Fortress Ogre I helped a few times.
About the lazy genius witch, Lapla.
There are many things I remember.
Though no one is alive anymore.
Longevity is a hard thing.
No, maybe it means I lived so long that without clinging to memories, I’d lose my mind.
With Lapla, I killed the other Rank Xs.
That’s how I became the one and only Rank XI in the world. But just before dying, the other Rank Xs had peaceful looks on their faces.
Eternity is long.
As a “Casparigue”, one who has escaped the concept of lifespan, I suppose I’m expected to learn how to handle eternity.
On the throne in the temple, I sit curled up comfortably.
The cushion prepared for me feels very pleasant. Feels like dozing on a cloud.
Each time I make a slight movement, the cat priestesses and cat priests bustle around.
Why do their hats have cat ears growing from them, I wonder.
Are they joking?
Well, I don’t butt into everything humans do.
There’s no end to it.
For some reason, I’ve been deified on their own.
After destroying a few countries, they said things like, “Calm thyself, O wild spirit!” and guided me to this temple.
Not like I became a god or anything.
Just that I rampaged so much back then that they thought I had.
Well, come on—
They destroyed Lapla’s grave, you know.
Of course I got pissed.
Even though I warned them many times, “If you leave the land with the grave, I’ll forgive you.”
I was taken too lightly.
So I used [Black Magic・Special] to spread disease. And when I got enough corpses, I controlled them and brought down a nation. Then another country came along…
Unbelievable.
Lapla and I were the monsters and heroes who repelled and even defeated the Demon King.
To forget that in just a few hundred years…
Even so, now is comfortable.
Just sit, sleep, and eat the food they offer me.
When something happens, they beg, “O Cat God, please save us.”
Most problems can be solved with magic.
Even as Rank XI, I only reached special level in four attributes: [Space], [Time], [Black], and [Water].
But with [Water Magic], I can make it rain. So I have just enough power for divine activities.
If they wish for destruction, that’s hard.
That was Lapla’s job—she could use special-level [Fire] and [Wind] magic.
“Oh! O Cat God! Great and noble Cat God Theodore…!”
As I was spacing out, one of the cat priestesses knelt down dramatically.
The commotion seemed to be due to a petition.
I looked down at the priestess with dull, narrow eyes.
An adult woman bowing before me, who is the size of a large cat. What a scene.
“The empire illegally summoned a hero and has declared war upon our country! Please, we beg you, save us poor followers of the Cat Faith!”
Ehh…
Do these people think of me as some “convenient cat-shaped weapon”, maybe? Sounds incredibly annoying.
Also, their religion is called the [Cat Faith]…
I think it used to be something else. Maybe it changed without me noticing.
I’d prefer a little more creativity.
In times like this, it’s fastest to speak plainly.
Lapla, who could “talk to anything” through her Unique Skill, taught me the languages of this world.
Now that I’m Rank XI, talking to people is no big deal.
I say:
“Let’s go with the usual contract. A story to entertain me.”
“Of course! We’ve prepared a supreme tale sure to delight the Cat God! The best storyteller in the capital is ready!”
“If I like it, I’ll act. If it’s really interesting, I’ll destroy this empire? And if it’s just okay, I’ll summon the heroes here. You can talk it out or beat them up—whatever you like.”
“! Th-thank you so much for your great mercy! S-storyteller, step forward!”
If I don’t like it… I’ll just sleep.
By now, no “enemy” can be an obstacle to me.
Whether monster, human, violence, or cunning, most of it means nothing.
The only thing that can kill me now is boredom.
That’s why I seek “stories” like this.
To live.
To repay the many lives entrusted to me…
I act as a god for these self-proclaimed believers. And in return, I receive stories as offerings.
That was our give-and-take.
The top singer of the capital, in rhythm with music, begins the tale.
What was told…
Was the tale of my partner, the lazy genius witch—Lapla.
Slightly… no, very much dramatized.
That girl was only made a hero kind of accidentally. And her goal was “to obtain days where she could sleep all day long,” you know? She wasn’t someone so admirable.
Basically, I already know everything about the stories regarding her.
From the day she tamed me.
…Not great, I guess.
Let’s leave the problem with the so-called heroes for them to solve on their own.
I’m getting drowsy.
It’s not a story enough to entertain me. But it might be good enough as a bedtime story. I let myself sink into a drowsy state, trying to fall asleep.
But.
Suddenly, I remembered. That’s right, I should probably use it soon.
That magic I was once made to believe was just [Instinct Detection].
【Hour of the Cat・Time Letter】
A top-grade [Time Magic] spell where, for ordinary humans, because of lifespan issues, the cooldown would never come back once used.
I used it for the first time in a while.
This is fine.
I have lived through endless time.
I will surely continue to live. …To repay the love of Mother Cat and my companions, I will keep on living.
Everyone… I’m still alive.
I closed my eyes, and stepped into a comfortable dream.
