- Chapter 15 - Fainting from the Sight of Blood
When it came to choosing clothes, Xie Anran was both meticulous and remarkably quick. She would hold up each outfit in front of An Ningqing, saying, “You actually look great in pants too. Why don’t you try some on?”
An Ningqing smiled silently at her.
Xie Anran would whisper in her ear, “Your legs are so long and straight—you’d look amazing in pants. Just try them on!”
By the time An Ningqing had finished her second cup of tea, Xie Anran had already picked out over a dozen outfits. The shop owner beamed, his eyes crinkling with delight, and showered her with praise: “Miss Xie has excellent taste! These are all the latest styles. They’ll look absolutely stunning on Miss An!”
The more the owner praised her, the more clothes Xie Anran piled up.
An Ningqing suspected that if they stayed for a few more hours, Xie Anran would empty the entire store.
“That’s enough,” An Ningqing said. “My closet is small.”
“Hmm?”
Xie Anran remembered An Ningqing’s cozy little apartment. Though she hadn’t seen the bedroom, the closet couldn’t be very large.
Finally relenting, she narrowed down her choices to twelve dresses—long and short—and three stylish pant outfits.
The shop owner cheerfully helped them carry the clothes to the car, inviting them to return soon.
An Ningqing touched the fabrics. Some felt like cotton, but most were unfamiliar to her, though the textures were pleasant enough. “Didn’t they forget to measure my hips?”
Ahem, ahem, ahem.
Xie Anran glanced guiltily at the person in the back seat and said with forced seriousness, “Fasten your seatbelts. Let’s go.”
Halfway through their drive, they hit a traffic jam.
A long line of cars stretched ahead, inching forward at a snail’s pace. After half an hour, they had only moved five hundred meters.
As time wore on, most people’s patience frayed. The air soon filled with blaring horns and angry shouts.
Some even ventured into the roadside bushes to relieve themselves. An Ningqing glanced away.
Xie Anran kept peering out the window. “What’s going on up ahead? Why is there still a traffic jam? I specifically chose a route that’s usually less congested.” She jumped out of the car. “Stay here. I’ll go check.”
A few minutes later, she ran back. “There’s been a major accident up ahead—a pileup involving five or six cars. It looks pretty serious. Everyone’s stuck here now.”
An Ningqing sat up straight. “Are there any injuries?”
Xie Anran was nearly suffocating from the heat. Already impatient by nature, the rising temperature made her even more irritable. Outside, the air felt like a steamer, while inside the car, without the air conditioning, it was like a sauna. The vehicles were completely gridlocked, and some people had gotten out to cool off. Occasionally, vendors would pass by selling water and boxed meals. Glancing at the time, she grew even more frustrated. “I don’t know the specifics, but I overheard someone up ahead saying there’s a pregnant woman in one of the cars who’s about to give birth—”
Before she could finish speaking, An Ningqing had already grabbed her bag, pushed open the car door, and stepped out.
“Hey, hey, where are you going?”
“I’m going to check it out.”
A pregnant woman’s about to give birth, Xie Anran thought. What’s the point of you going to join the crowd? What’s so interesting about a car accident anyway? Aren’t you afraid of bad luck? Great, we’re definitely going to miss dinner today. She quickly pulled out her phone to call her mother.
The closer they got to the accident site, the larger the crowd grew, and the louder the wailing became. The scene buzzed with noise, as chaotic as a bustling vegetable market.
An Ningqing pushed past the gawkers filming with their phones, her eyes taking in the carnage. The vehicles at the front were more severely damaged, with the front ends of two cars completely caved in. Bumpers had been torn off, bodies were riddled with dents, and shattered glass littered the ground. Some people were trapped in their driver’s seats, unable to escape.
One woman sat weeping, covered in bl00d as she frantically made a phone call. Another lay motionless on the ground.
An Ningqing’s fingers trembled. This was the first time she had faced such a direct danger in this world—a car accident.
She checked the patients one by one. Most had external injuries, but she had no medicine or bandages with her.
In that moment, An Ningqing was filled with regret.
“Any women here who can lend a hand? Men, stay back! A pregnant woman is about to give birth—what are you staring at?”
“I’ll help, but I don’t know anything about childbirth.”
“That’s alright. Just stand outside and block the wind from the pregnant woman.”
“I have a tent in my car.”
“Perfect! Hurry, get the pregnant woman inside to deliver.”
“Come, come, don’t panic. I’ve had two children myself, both natural births. Just breathe deeply.”
An Ningqing turned to see a woman in her forties or fifties directing the scene in front of the tent. They had set up a makeshift shelter for the frightened pregnant woman, lining the ground with several layers of clothing to stabilize the chaotic situation. But the outdoor conditions were harsh, the weather was hot, and the pregnant woman’s condition was deteriorating.
Sweat soaked her long hair, her face was pale, and her eyes were glazed over. She was exerting every ounce of strength to deliver the child her family had been eagerly awaiting. Her knuckles were white as she gripped her clothes, and the ground beneath her was a bloody mess.
A woman beside her kept encouraging her, “Don’t be afraid! I can see the baby’s head. Come on, push harder!”
The pregnant woman shook her head, tears streaming down her face. She had originally scheduled a C-section at the hospital, but who could have predicted this sudden emergency? “How is my husband? Where is he?”
The people surrounding her exchanged uneasy glances, none daring to speak. The woman’s husband was still trapped in the car, and despite several attempts to rescue him, they hadn’t managed to get him out. They would likely have to wait for the fire department to arrive.
“I’m too weak… It hurts so much… I don’t want to give birth anymore… I don’t want this baby.”
“That’s not an option.”
A gentle yet firm voice cut through the air. All eyes turned toward the speaker, and someone recognized An Ningqing’s face. “You… aren’t you that actress who played the Queen?”
An Ningqing smiled faintly at the woman. Having assisted with countless births—if not thousands, certainly hundreds—she knew every labor was different. In this case, the longer they waited, the more difficult it would become, especially with the woman’s exhaustion. Without a final push, the situation could easily end in tragedy. Though in this world, perhaps even a C-section performed here might save at least one life.
She retrieved the silver needles from her bag, having prepared everything beforehand. After sterilizing the needles, she declared, “I’m a doctor. I’ll deliver your baby.”
The woman beside her eyed her skeptically. “You’re a doctor? Aren’t you a celebrity? Young lady, have you ever delivered a baby before?”
“Don’t mess around if you don’t know what you’re doing.”
“This is someone’s life, not a game.”
An Ningqing expertly palpated the pregnant woman’s swollen abdomen, then tore a strip of cloth from her skirt and stuffed it into the woman’s mouth. “I’m going to induce labor now. When your cervix dilates, please cooperate with me.”
With that, she inserted a silver needle into the woman’s Huantiao Point.
The pregnant woman felt a tingling sensation spread to her toes, an unmistakable sensation that sharpened her awareness.
The crowd watched as An Ningqing methodically inserted silver needles into the woman’s soles, forehead, lower abdomen… Her intense focus silenced the room. Even the woman who had questioned her earlier fell silent, impressed by her seemingly professional technique.
It was as if this young celebrity really knew how to deliver a baby.
“The cervix seems to be dilating further.”
“Mm, let’s wait a bit longer and conserve our energy.”
When Xie Anran arrived, the pregnant woman was desperately trying to deliver her child, pushing with all her might to bring the baby into the world. “An Ningqing, what are you doing here—” she gasped, but her words were cut short by the sight of bl00d everywhere.
Thud!
“Ah, someone fainted!”
“Huh?”
An Ningqing thought she heard Xie Anran’s voice. She turned around to find Xie Anran lying on the ground, while the baby’s head had already emerged. “You’re doing great! Just one more push, and you’ll see your baby soon.”
Childbirth is like walking through the gates of hell, with every step fraught with potential complications. An Ningqing dared not let her guard down.
The crowd cheered her on, and the pregnant woman seemed to gather renewed strength. She gritted her teeth, straining with all her might, veins bulging on her forehead.
“Almost there! It’s coming out!”
“Aaaah!”
No one paid attention to Xie Anran lying on the ground.
The noise around her roused Xie Anran from her unconsciousness. She rubbed her head, glanced around in confusion, and then belatedly remembered she had come to find An Ningqing.
“She’s given birth! She’s given birth!”
“Congratulations! It’s a girl!”
Pushing through the crowd, An Ningqing saw the pregnant woman cradling something, her hands stained crimson.
Thump—
“Oh no, she’s fainted again!”
“……”
An Ningqing gently patted the baby in her arms. The infant let out a loud, vigorous cry, its voice surprisingly strong. She handed the baby to a nearby woman, her hands still bloody. “Wipe the baby with a cloth and wrap her up. Don’t let her get cold.”
Soon, someone returned from the car with clean towels, water, and even diapers.
The pregnant woman couldn’t believe she had delivered naturally. Gritting through the tearing pain, she struggled to sit up. “Can I see my baby?”
“Of course.”
With a moment to spare, An Ningqing casually wiped her hands before taking Xie Anran’s pulse.
The pulse was strong, her qi and bl00d abundant. Everything seemed normal, except…
Xie Anran’s condition matched her previous diagnosis. Logically, she shouldn’t have fainted.
“She’s fainted twice. Could it be low bl00d sugar?”
“No.”
An Ningqing inserted a silver needle into Xie Anran’s body. The woman slowly opened her eyes, and the girl beside her exclaimed in amazement, “Your needle is so magical! She woke up with just one prick!”
Xie Anran was so dizzy she didn’t even want to speak. She grabbed An Ningqing’s hand and gasped, “What was that thing you were holding—” But when she saw the bloodstains on An Ningqing’s white dress, her vision went black.
She fainted again.
“Ah! Why did she faint again?”
“Could she be afraid of bl00d?”
An Ningqing glanced at her bl00d-soaked clothes and realized, “Could you help me get her outside?”
“No problem.”
The two women supported Xie Anran outside. Under the sunlight, she soon stirred awake.
The little girl had already left, but before she did, she had secretly asked An Ningqing if she was really the An Ningqing from TV.
An Ningqing let Xie Anran lean against her back, wrapping her arms around her from behind to shield her from the bloodstains. “I never imagined the Third Miss, who fears even kidnappers, would faint at the sight of bl00d.”
She chuckled softly.
Xie Anran remained silent.
Ahhh, maybe she should just stay unconscious.
