- Chapter 2 - Being Shelved
After An Ningqing finished her introduction, she was wondering how to extricate herself when a minivan came barreling through the crowd, screeching to a halt in front of them with a dramatic fishtail maneuver.
“Get in quickly!”
The vehicle sped away, leaving behind a trail of exhaust fumes and dumbfounded paparazzi who belatedly realized they had just let the hottest topic of the day slip through their fingers.
“Who… who did she say was her fiancée?”
“That person with her… they look a lot like Third Miss Xie. Ha! Can you believe someone actually looks like Third Miss Xie?”
“Could it be Xie Anran herself?”
Xie Anran, the third daughter of Kyoto’s most prestigious family, was known for her fiery temper, stunning figure, and the overprotective Eldest Young Master Xie, who doted on his younger sister. The public affectionately referred to her as Third Miss Xie.
The reporters hesitated about pursuing the story further. After all, involving Xie Anran meant inevitably drawing the attention of Eldest Young Master Xie.
They simply couldn’t afford to cross him.
Maybe it’s best to just drop it?
As soon as An Ningqing got into the car, she released Xie Anran, letting her slump against the seat.
“Ha ha! Your public announcement couldn’t have been timed better!”
“Phew, that was a close call, An An! You narrowly escaped disaster.”
An Ningqing smiled calmly, acting as if the incident wasn’t worth all the fuss. Guan Lang didn’t want to discuss her problems in front of outsiders: getting drunk, booking a hotel room, being photographed, and sleeping with a fan. Sleeping with fans was one thing—doing it secretly was fine—but getting caught and going viral, for all the wrong reasons, was a disaster. The overnight traffic and discussion surpassed even the buzz from her hit web drama.
However, his attention quickly shifted to An Ningqing’s publicly declared “fiancée.” The woman remained silent after getting into the car, glaring fiercely at him with her stunning eyes.
Why is she glaring at me?!
Did I say something wrong?!
Xie Anran’s beautiful eyes nearly blazed with fury. If she could speak, she would have pointed her finger at Guan Lang and unleashed a torrent of abuse.
The more Guan Lang looked, the more uneasy he felt. He pulled out his phone to check online photos of Third Miss Xie, then compared them to the woman before him. From her nose to her eyes to those sensual lips, his jaw dropped. His trembling finger pointed at Xie Anran as he stammered, “Y-you’re a fan?”
She’s not that… what’s-her-name.
An Ningqing had anticipated Xie Anran’s outburst, which was why she let her sit and cool down first. There was no rush to release her pressure points until she calmed down completely. “Probably.”
Even haters counted as fans.
Guan Lang swallowed hard. “Should we take her home first?”
He immediately instructed the driver to turn around.
An Ningqing ignored Guan Lang’s obsequious behavior, which resembled that of a palace eunuch attending to his master. “Sure.”
When they arrived at the entrance, An Ningqing helped Xie Anran out of the car. After confirming she could stand steadily, she released her pressure points. “Thank you. I, An Ningqing, owe you one.”
Before Xie Anran could reply, An Ningqing had already hopped back into the car like a rabbit returning to its burrow, the door slamming shut with a clang. “Get back here, you b1tch!”
The car sped away as if fleeing, leaving a trail of dust in its wake.
Xie Anran squeezed her eyes shut. Aaaaaah! She’s driving me crazy!
That damned woman! We’re enemies for life!
An Ningqing couldn’t hear her. She sat calmly in the car, letting Guan Lang’s incessant nagging wash over her. He was terrified. “You absolutely must treat this ancestral figure with utmost care! Otherwise, she could crush you with a single finger!”
“Does this world still have imperial authority?”
Guan Lang continued his earnest persuasion, “With just a word, she could ruin your career in the entertainment industry—a complete blacklist, no roles, no endorsements. You need to take this seriously!”
An Ningqing’s eyes lit up. “Really?!”
Guan Lang stared at her, bewildered. “???”
What’s going on? She seems almost… excited?
An Ningqing had no desire to be an actress; she longed to return to her true calling as a doctor. But she knew this man would inevitably become her adversary. Their interests might align for now, but once the profits were unevenly distributed, everything could change. She leaned back in her chair, feigning nonchalance. “Just kidding. Don’t take it seriously.”
Guan Lang patted his chest. “My poor heart can’t handle any more shocks. I’ll keep you updated on Third Miss Xie’s movements. Now, let’s talk about this ‘sleeping with fans’ incident.”
An Ningqing raised an eyebrow. “Do I look like I’ve successfully slept with a fan?”
Guan Lang choked.
When those photos surfaced yesterday, he had already drafted an apology speech in his mind. If the scandal was confirmed, they’d do a livestream where An Ningqing would tearfully apologize to her fans. But the “fan” turned out to be Third Miss Xie. “So… she slept with you?!”
An Ningqing’s expression was ambiguous, somewhere between a smile and a sneer.
Guan Lang was relieved. He knew a woman like Third Miss Xie would never let An Ningqing dominate her, so it couldn’t be considered “sleeping with a fan.” He could relax now.
An Ningqing could practically read his mind. He probably thought that by latching onto Xie Anran’s coattails, she’d be set for life. Compared to sleeping with fans, clinging to a wealthy patron meant she could choose any career path she wanted.
Dream on.
She didn’t bother shattering his illusions.
She simply had Guan Lang drive her back to her apartment. He followed her upstairs, still rattling off instructions, nearly hypnotizing her with his droning voice.
Inside, she kicked off her shoes. The place was a disaster, almost suffocating her, but she was too exhausted to clean.
Even though she’d vomited up all the alcohol and food from the previous night, the lingering effects of the poisoning still lingered. She’d forced herself to stay composed earlier, but now her face was pale, and the nausea persisted. An Ningqing sank into the least cluttered spot she could find and sat there, slowly recovering.
Guan Lang hadn’t noticed her distress and was still chattering excitedly.
The doorbell rang.
He casually opened the door, only for a soft, fragrant woman to suddenly collapse into his arms, her voice dripping with coquettishness. “An An, waah, is what they’re saying online true? Is Third Miss Xie really your fiancée?”
Guan Lang: “!!!”
The woman seemed to realize something was off too. Only men had such rock-hard muscles, and the cologne he wore was unmistakably masculine. She scrambled back in a panic.
Guan Lang recoiled as if from a venomous snake, taking a large step back and rubbing the goosebumps on his arm.
They both blurted out almost simultaneously:
“Why are you at An An’s house?!”
“Who are you?!”
Oh, snap.
She’d been caught.
An Ningqing ushered the woman inside and thoughtfully poured her a cup of hot water.
Guan Lang: “An An, who is this woman?”
The young woman, having recognized Guan Lang, gave An Ningqing an apologetic look and tried to explain, “Brother Lang, I’m just An An’s fan. Don’t misunderstand.”
Guan Lang couldn’t stand the word “fan” right now. Remembering the woman’s earlier intimacy—she’d clearly mistaken him for An Ningqing—he felt a wave of darkness wash over him. An artist and a fan getting cozy? That’s crossing the line! Even if she’s a woman, this is unacceptable!
An Ningqing sleeps with her fans. Case closed.
The rumors from outside were actually true.
I’m going to die.
If Third Miss Xie found out about this, she’d probably just have them both drowned in the river.
Guan Lang dragged An Ningqing into the room, his orchid finger trembling with rage. “I asked you in the car if you slept with fans, and you said no. Now explain this to me!”
An Ningqing felt physically weak, but she wasn’t guilty at all. The original owner of this body had been the one who flirted with and deceived fans—it had nothing to do with her.
She even offered Guan Lang, who was about to explode with anger, a solution. “My conduct is shameful. I’m not worthy of being your artist. Why don’t you tell the Company to fire me or put me on hiatus? I can retire right here and now.”
Guan Lang nearly choked on his own breath.
“You… you… you’re going to kill me with anger!”
“How could I?” An Ningqing replied insincerely. If she really wanted to enrage him, she would have told him all the terrible things the original owner had done in the car. He might be lying in a hospital bed right now instead of standing in this apartment.
Guan Lang tried to calm himself. “Just her, right?”
An Ningqing smiled. “I don’t think so.”
Guan Lang clutched his chest, his hand trembling as he grabbed a piece of paper. “Write down their contact information—accounts, names, everything.”
An Ningqing seemed to hear Guan Lang grinding his teeth. She didn’t respond. “It’s all in the chat history. Go look for yourself. If you’re so scared, why don’t you just invite them all out at once?”
Guan Lang shrieked, “All of them?!”
Has my artist finally gone mad?
Feeling deeply uncomfortable, An Ningqing couldn’t be bothered to deal with this anymore. “Could you please take the girl outside home? Don’t let her walk alone at night. Take her to her doorstep and watch her go inside.”
With that, she pushed him out the door and slammed it shut. She immediately vomited again, this time bringing up nearly all her bile. After retching, An Ningqing collapsed onto the bed, lying motionless as if dead.
Outside, Guan Lang escorted the remorseful fan home, subtly probing her for details along the way. He pieced together the story: occasional messages of concern, mutual venting about life’s hardships, and promises to go shopping, have meals, and watch movies together…
Thankfully, their relationship hadn’t progressed to physical intimacy.
The fan, her face tear-streaked, whimpered, “Lang-ge, it’s my fault. Don’t blame An An.”
Guan Lang’s head throbbed violently. He waved her off and fled, fearing he’d cough up bl00d and die if he stayed any longer.
This little troublemaker is always causing problems! From now on, I’m managing all her social media accounts. Confiscate them all! Every single one!
Xie Anran, who had just returned home, immediately saw the trending topic online:
Shocking! The Xie family’s wild rose willingly bends her branch for An Ningqing.
An Ningqing!
Furious, Xie Anran smashed every crystal glass in her room.
That damned woman! If she hadn’t drugged me, would I have been so defenseless?!
Before she could even dig up An Ningqing’s family history, her social media accounts were flooded with calls from her girlfriends.
Messages in their group chat surged past 99+ with lightning speed—faster than a rocket launch.
Is this for real?!
Our Third Miss Xie has fallen for a minor actress?!
Hahaha, everyone check out this photo!

Who knew our Third Miss Xie was the bottom?! Pupil Shock.jpg
Bullshit!
Xie Anran clicked on the memes flooding the group chat, her anger boiling over. Every single one featured her face, accompanied by captions like “Clinging Like a Little Bird.” I only leaned on her because my body was weak! It wasn’t like I was snuggling into her arms! And those “Eyes Full of Affection” shots? I was trying to kill An Ningqing with my glare! Didn’t they see the murderous intent in my eyes?!
Who the hell took these photos?!
Do they even know how to take a proper picture? If not, they should just stop! This is all just a bunch of garbage!
Time for a do-over!
