I Fall Every Time I Meet an Alpha [Transmigrated into a Book] - Chapter 10
Now that Zhong Xiaoxiao and Meng Yuqing had formed an alliance, everything became much easier. As the saying goes, “Three ordinary men can match the wisdom of one Zhuge Liang.” Even with just two of them, they should at least be able to match half of one.
Right after agreeing to work together, Meng Yuqing leaned over and whispered a few things into Zhong Xiaoxiao’s ear. And just like that, their plan was set in motion.
At this moment, Zhong Xiaoxiao sat at her desk feeling anxious. Meng Yuzhou was beside her working on a practice paper. She kept glancing at him from the corner of her eye. She had once thought about asking him for help with math, but since he already had a girlfriend, she didn’t dare get too close. And having already experienced adult life, her mind was no longer fully focused on studying. She just couldn’t bring herself to absorb anything.
As long as the teacher didn’t call on her in class, she would get by. When the next class committee election came, she decided she would no longer run for study monitor.
She glanced toward the door and saw Meng Yuqing walk in with her usual confident smile. Her sharp, almond-shaped eyes carried a look of arrogance. The moment Zhong Xiaoxiao saw her, she tensed up for no clear reason. Her heart started pounding rapidly.
Meng Yuqing approached with a refined blue envelope in her hand. She walked straight over to Zhong Xiaoxiao’s desk and dropped the envelope in front of her.
“Someone asked me to give this to you,” she said casually.
Zhong Xiaoxiao looked at the envelope. Written in large characters on the front were the words, “To Zhong Xiaoxiao.” In a panic, she shoved the envelope into her drawer.
“A love letter?” Meng Yuqing returned to her seat, leaned forward, and said it in a voice just loud enough for the right people to hear.
Meng Yuzhou paused, his pen halting mid-sentence. He glanced sideways at Zhong Xiaoxiao’s drawer but said nothing.
Meng Yuqing, knowing her brother’s thoughts inside and out, could tell he was getting nervous. She looked at him and chuckled quietly.
Zhong Xiaoxiao blushed and whispered in embarrassment, “It’s nothing. Don’t talk nonsense.” She quickly slipped the letter into her backpack when no one was looking.
Although Meng Yuzhou didn’t look directly at her, he was secretly watching her every move. Seeing her receive a love letter made him feel a strange sense of irritation. His sister’s earlier warning echoed in his ears.
“If you keep pushing her away, you might just push her toward someone else. Zhong Xiaoxiao has good qualities. She’s liked by many people.”
She’s liked by many people.
Meng Yuzhou didn’t speak for the next two class periods. As class was about to end, he finally turned toward Zhong Xiaoxiao and said softly, “Let’s go to the library after school. You wanted help with math, remember?”
“Huh? Oh, no, it’s okay,” she replied quickly. Her mind was focused on Meng Yuqing’s plan, and she didn’t have the energy to deal with him at the moment. “I have something else to do.”
From Meng Yuzhou’s point of view, her “something else” had to do with that love letter. She was probably planning to meet someone. Maybe she would agree to date that person and slowly drift further away from him.
He had wanted to protect her, but instead, he had pushed her away.
Meng Yuzhou grew more and more frustrated. He gripped his pen tightly, nearly snapping it in half.
All the while, Meng Yuqing sat behind them, quietly watching their reactions to the love letter. The truth was, she had written the letter herself.
It only contained one line: “Let’s meet at dusk, beneath the moon and the lover’s tree.”
During lunch, Meng Yuqing had casually mentioned the letter’s content to her brother.
“That guy asked Zhong Xiaoxiao to meet him under the lover’s trees after school.”
“How do you know that?” Meng Yuzhou asked, surprised.
“I saw what was written inside,” Meng Yuqing replied with a smile. “Brother, if you don’t step up soon, your future sister-in-law will end up with someone else. That guy is actually pretty handsome. He’s from the class next door.”
Meng Yuzhou wanted to scold her for reading someone else’s private letter, but he didn’t have the patience for that right now. His thoughts were completely occupied by the idea that someone had asked Zhong Xiaoxiao to meet under the lover’s trees. Would she go? If she did, would she say yes?
He had been so sure she liked him, but now he wasn’t so certain.
After school, Zhong Xiaoxiao quickly packed her things and left the classroom.
Meng Yuzhou watched her go, his heart sinking. He walked out and looked down from the fifth floor. He saw her heading in the direction of the lover’s trees.
Gan Qingyun came up to him.
“Yuzhou, let’s go eat together.”
“I’m not hungry. You go ahead,” he replied coldly. Without waiting for a response, he turned and walked away.
“Yuzhou!” Gan Qingyun called after him.
He stopped abruptly at the stairs, turned his head slightly, and gave her a sideways glance. His eyes were filled with frustration.
“Stop following me.”
His voice was cold and distant, filled with restrained anger and rejection. It didn’t sound like he was talking to a girlfriend, but to a stranger who had nothing to do with him.
Gan Qingyun was hurt by his harsh tone. She watched him walk away and felt deeply unwilling to let go. She loved him, but he didn’t love her. It had never been a balanced relationship.
Feeling heartbroken and disappointed, she was about to head back alone when she noticed Meng Yuzhou wasn’t walking toward the school gate. Where was he going? What was he planning to do? Was he secretly meeting someone?
A memory flashed through her mind. That night at the karaoke bar, she had seen him kiss Zhong Xiaoxiao. Her suspicions immediately flared up. Was he rejecting her just so he could go meet Zhong Xiaoxiao?
Zhong Xiaoxiao stood under the lover’s trees, staring up at the intertwined branches above her. These were two large banyan trees growing so close together that their roots, trunks, and branches had merged. It looked like they were embracing each other, which is how the trees got their name.
The Lover’s Trees stood on Lover’s Hill, a small slope behind the school. It was a peaceful place where many couples liked to meet in private.
As Zhong Xiaoxiao walked up the hill, she passed several couples. Some were sitting close together, some holding hands. When she saw a pair kissing, her face turned red.
She thought to herself, “Wow, in this lifetime, I get to experience pure, innocent school love again. This is such a beautiful feeling.”
She waited under the trees, glancing around. Not far away, Meng Yuzhou stood watching her silently. Behind him, Gan Qingyun followed his line of sight and also saw Zhong Xiaoxiao standing under the Lover’s Trees. Jealousy instantly flared in her chest.
So it was true. He really did come here to meet her.
Gan Qingyun waited for him to walk over so she could catch him in the act. But instead, he remained still. He stood there, not moving a step.
She frowned. If he had come here to meet someone, why was he just standing there?
She got her answer soon enough.
A boy suddenly appeared in front of Zhong Xiaoxiao. He was taller than her and looked a little thin, but he had a refined and confident presence.
Gan Qingyun watched as the boy spoke to Zhong Xiaoxiao, then gently reached out and took her hand. A moment later, he pulled her into a hug.
Gan Qingyun’s heart dropped.
She turned her eyes back to Meng Yuzhou and noticed a heavy darkness in his expression. His whole body seemed to be surrounded by a gloomy aura. She quickly looked away, hoping to leave before he noticed her standing there. If he saw her again, he might get even more upset.
But just before she turned to go, she took one last look toward the trees.
She saw the boy slowly let go of Zhong Xiaoxiao, lean forward, and move his face toward hers.
They were too far away to see clearly, but his posture made it obvious. He was kissing her.
Gan Qingyun’s jaw nearly dropped from shock.
