I Fall Every Time I Meet an Alpha [Transmigrated into a Book] - Chapter 6
The four of them went out to eat first.
In a high-end restaurant, Meng Yuzhou sat with Gan Qingyun, while Zhong Xiaoxiao and Meng Yuqing sat across from them.
Meng Yuzhou’s eyes kept drifting toward Zhong Xiaoxiao. In many small ways, he paid close attention to her and took care of her. Anyone watching could tell what was going on. Gan Qingyun, his current girlfriend, had her gaze locked on him. When she noticed him looking at Zhong Xiaoxiao, she followed his gaze and looked too.
Zhong Xiaoxiao was petite, her figure thin and flat. There was nothing remarkable about her. Compared to Gan Qingyun, she seemed plain and ordinary. Gan Qingyun could not understand why Meng Yuzhou was giving her so much attention.
Unhappiness flickered in her heart, but her face remained smiling.
“This classmate seems very close with you and your sister,” Gan Qingyun said with a polite smile.
“Of course,” Meng Yuqing replied with a glance at the other two, then let her eyes settle on Zhong Xiaoxiao. Her smile carried a strange, teasing tone. “I even thought she might end up becoming my sister-in-law.”
Zhong Xiaoxiao thought to herself, Can you shut up, Meng Yuqing? Are you trying to start a fight?
Gan Qingyun’s heart sank. If Zhong Xiaoxiao was the sister-in-law, then what did that make her?
“Meng Yuzhou, do you like her?” Gan Qingyun asked with a smile, pretending not to care.
“No,” Meng Yuzhou replied quickly. “Don’t say things like that.”
“My brother’s just like that. He never says what he really feels,” Meng Yuqing added, stoking the fire. “His actions already gave him away,” she said, clearly referring to how he was treating Zhong Xiaoxiao.
Zhong Xiaoxiao thought, We’re just here to eat, but this whole situation feels so awkward. And it is not even her place to say anything.
Gan Qingyun glanced at Zhong Xiaoxiao with an unreadable look in her eyes.
“It’s getting late. I need to head home,” Zhong Xiaoxiao said suddenly, standing up. As she moved, Meng Yuzhou’s heart skipped a beat. He stared at her.
“You’re leaving already?” he asked.
“Yes, I need to go,” she replied.
Gan Qingyun watched the way they interacted, as if no one else were present. The tenderness Meng Yuzhou showed Zhong Xiaoxiao made her feel even more upset. She truly liked Meng Yuzhou and genuinely felt jealous.
“So soon?” Meng Yuqing said, still sitting and blocking Zhong Xiaoxiao’s path. Zhong Xiaoxiao was sitting near the window and had no way out. She seriously considered breaking the window and climbing out.
Outside, night had already fallen. The city lights were glowing brightly in the distance.
“I really need to go,” Zhong Xiaoxiao said. On the outside, she looked soft and gentle, but in her heart, she was already imagining strangling Meng Yuqing. Get out of my way. Move. Move right now.
“Wait. Are you cursing me?” Meng Yuqing suddenly asked, narrowing her eyes.
System 666 spoke up, “I gave it some thought and decided to activate your mind-reading ability for the female lead. Understanding her thoughts may help correct the story.”
“I didn’t curse you,” Zhong Xiaoxiao said quickly.
Inside her head, she was screaming, What? How did she guess that?
“Oh, this is getting interesting,” Meng Yuqing smiled with amusement. She looked like a troublemaker on the surface, but reading Zhong Xiaoxiao’s chaotic inner voice gave her a strange sense of fun. It was kind of adorable in a weird way.
Zhong Xiaoxiao was still stuck standing there awkwardly. She had no choice but to sit back down.
Meng Yuqing turned to look at the other two. Meng Yuzhou was hoping Zhong Xiaoxiao would stay. Gan Qingyun was hoping Zhong Xiaoxiao would leave as soon as possible.
System 666 started speaking again.
Meng Yuqing interrupted, “I get it already.”
She looked at the three people in front of her, each one pretending to feel something different from what they actually did.
For example, her brother clearly liked Zhong Xiaoxiao but kept denying it.
Gan Qingyun clearly wanted Zhong Xiaoxiao to disappear, yet she smiled and pretended to be welcoming.
Zhong Xiaoxiao was filled with frustration and discomfort, but she acted calm and unaffected.
Gan Qingyun smiled sweetly and said, “Why go home so early? We should hang out a little longer.”
Zhong Xiaoxiao responded, “My mom worries about me. She doesn’t allow me to stay out too late.”
Meng Yuqing spoke up, “It’s only eight o’clock. No need to rush. Let’s go sing karaoke.”
Zhong Xiaoxiao was panicking inside. Karaoke? Seriously? She was completely tone-deaf. What was she supposed to sing?
Meng Yuqing could hear every word running through her mind and found it hilarious.
“Tone-deaf, are you?” Meng Yuqing said aloud. “I’d love to hear what that sounds like.”
“Huh?” Zhong Xiaoxiao looked at her, confused. What was going on? Was she crazy or something? Zhong Xiaoxiao thought to herself, Just bear with it. Later, I’ll pretend my mom called and sneak away.
But Meng Yuqing didn’t give her the chance. She dragged her to the karaoke place and even picked a love song duet, handing the microphones to her and her brother. Gan Qingyun was left sitting off to the side.
Zhong Xiaoxiao glanced at Gan Qingyun and quickly said, “I can’t sing. Let her do it.”
Gan Qingyun gave a tight smile. “It’s fine. You go ahead.”
Zhong Xiaoxiao cried inside. I really can’t sing. I wasn’t just being polite.
Meng Yuqing leaned close and asked, “Then what do you know how to sing? I’ll choose one for you.”
Zhong Xiaoxiao looked at her face under the warm, soft lighting. The shadows made her features appear gentle and even beautiful.
For a moment, Zhong Xiaoxiao felt stunned. Could the so-called villainess actually look this soft? She had always imagined a villainess to be vicious and terrifying, like when they had first met. But now, under this light, Meng Yuqing looked almost peaceful, her eyes shining softly as she stared at her.
Vicious female supporting role?
When Meng Yuqing heard that title, her expression became a little complicated.
Vicious female supporting role? Who are they talking about?
System 666 replied,
“That would be you.”
Over by the song list, Meng Yuzhou turned and asked, “Are we singing this one? Xiaoxiao, want to join us?”
Zhong Xiaoxiao quickly shook her head. “I really can’t sing. You two go ahead.”
In the end, Meng Yuqing picked up the microphone and sang the duet with her brother.
Both their voices were pleasant to listen to. Meng Yuzhou’s tone was deep, warm, and magnetic. Meng Yuqing’s voice was bright, clear, and sweet. They sang well, and their performance was genuinely impressive.
Zhong Xiaoxiao and Gan Qingyun sat on the couch, listening to the song and eating sunflower seeds.
The private karaoke room was extravagant. Everything sparkled with gold, giving off an air of luxury and wealth. The fruit platter was arranged in the shape of a dragon and a phoenix. A dozen bottles of beer sat chilling nearby.
Zhong Xiaoxiao glanced at the beer and grew uneasy. Are they going to make me drink? No way. The female lead is still underage. She absolutely cannot drink.
The song ended, and the performance was perfect.
Meng Yuqing came back and sat next to Zhong Xiaoxiao. She was clearly still in a good mood and asked with a smile, “So, how did I do? Wasn’t it beautiful?”
Beautiful, my foot, Zhong Xiaoxiao thought. Sure, it was good, but I’m not admitting it. I don’t want her getting too full of herself.
“It was alright,” she said with a flat expression.
Meng Yuqing burst into a light laugh. She had just heard the huge difference between Zhong Xiaoxiao’s thoughts and her actual words.
Meng Yuzhou sat down on Zhong Xiaoxiao’s other side. On his other side sat Gan Qingyun.
Gan Qingyun had been left out for a while and was starting to feel annoyed. She turned to Meng Yuzhou and said, “Yuzhou, why don’t we sing a duet too?”
Meng Yuzhou glanced at her and replied gently, “I strained my voice on the last song. My throat doesn’t feel too good. You go ahead.”
Even though his words were polite, they still sounded cold to Gan Qingyun.
If Zhong Xiaoxiao had asked, you would have said yes, no matter what, she thought. Her frustration grew stronger. His gaze kept drifting toward Zhong Xiaoxiao.
Why is he paying so much attention to her? What does she have that I don’t?
If he really likes her so much, then why did he agree to date me?
Gan Qingyun was furious inside, but she kept a calm and composed expression on her face.
Meng Yuqing casually glanced at her. The corners of her eyes held a smile, but there was no warmth behind it.
