- I Fell in Love With My Cold-Hearted, Flirtatious Roommate (GL)
- Chapter 10 - Together, Don’t Say This Casually
Hearing Chen Baiyuan’s shocking words, Rong Ting was stunned like she had been struck by lightning, standing frozen on the spot.
“Alright, come in.” Chen Baiyuan treated it like an irrelevant joke, pulled open the room door, and gestured for her to enter first.
Rong Ting finally recovered her senses, looked at the bedroom, and sighed with wonder again.
Chen Baiyuan’s bedroom was ten times the size of Rong Ting’s current room. It was designed like a princess room, all in pink and tender colors, filled with many dolls and figurines. A large wide-screen computer was placed on the desk, equipped with a complete set of recording equipment, one microphone of which looked extremely familiar to Rong Ting.
She pointed at the microphone, “What is this?”
“Ah, that’s a condenser microphone, for voice chat and voice acting.”
Rong Ting’s curiosity was piqued, “Are you interested in voice acting too?”
“Of course,” Chen Baiyuan said proudly, “I’m a veteran fan. I follow several big names in the voice acting circle now.”
As if to prove it, she immediately started the computer, “I’m telling you, there’s a live stream from my male idol in a moment. I’m going to listen. Do you want to listen?”
Rong Ting was about to shake her head but then remembered that she should follow local customs. Besides, what else could she do?
Moreover, she was a little curious about what Ran Jiu’s usual work was like.
Seeing her nod, Chen Baiyuan smiled with satisfaction, “You can become a fan of my idol with me then.”
When she clicked into the live stream, it had already been running for over ten minutes. The voice actor inside was not showing his face but was singing a song. Rong Ting could tell it was a currently very popular traditional Chinese style song called Jian Zhan Shan He (Sword Slashes Mountains and Rivers). The subtitles in the room were scrolling frantically with fans’ shouts.
Chen Baiyuan’s eyes turned starry as she listened to the live stream, “Aah! That’s amazing! Lord Ting is truly amazing!”
“Such a good voice! Super love it!” She sent the comment in the bullet screen, and then clicked something that made the sentence stay in the center of the screen for 30 seconds, while also sending several gifts in a row.
The voice actor, who had just finished singing, smiled and said, “Thank you, A Yuan.”
Rong Ting: “Is this a male CV (voice actor)?”
The CV inside said something else that almost made Chen Baiyuan jump up excitedly, and she screamed “Aah!” for a long time.
After she had screamed enough, she finally remembered Rong Ting’s question: “I just admire him, but I still like girls.”
Rong Ting: “…”
She was utterly confused watching from the side. The values of those gifts were high; they must be quite expensive. She pointed at one of the gift icons, “Uh, how much does this cost in our RMB?”
Chen Baiyuan turned back, looking at her bewilderedly and humorously: “Did I send that? I forgot. Maybe five hundred. It’s not much.” After saying that, she casually sent a few more gifts.
Rong Ting instantly felt an irregular heartbeat. She only earned one hundred per hour tutoring! This person was performing a goddess scattering flowers act, spending five hundred in a minute?
Fortunately, Chen Baiyuan’s excitement slowly faded after half an hour, and she finally started chatting with her cousin.
“Do you like voice acting too, Cousin?”
Rong Ting shook her head, “No, a friend had a related part-time job, so I was just asking.”
Chen Baiyuan’s eyes brightened: “Who?”
Rong Ting smiled and shook her head: “My roommate is a CV, I think at Freesia Studio?”
“I’ve heard of that studio!” Chen Baiyuan proudly introduced, “They mainly take radio dramas! And they voiced many Baihe (Yuri) dramas last year! Their momentum only started to pick up this year. I heard they are recruiting new people crazily lately. Your roommate is probably there for an internship.”
“Oh.”
Chen Baiyuan spoke eloquently about these things: “I super like the CV Jiu Tu (Wine Disciple/Addict) there! Do you know, she really has an absolutely beautiful female dominant voice (nu gong yin)! I only got into those dramas because of her. I even follow her Weibo!”
“Which Jiu Tu?”
“Oh, it’s the Jiu from Jiu Lai (drinking), and the Tu from Tu Lao (futile)!”
The string in Rong Ting’s mind immediately twanged.
Xiao Zhi had said Ran Jiu’s CV name was related to Jiu. It must be her.
Listening to Chen Baiyuan’s introduction, she subconsciously searched “Jiu Tu” on Weibo. Several related users popped up. Chen Baiyuan saw it and guided her, “You can’t search like that. You have to add the studio’s name in front.”
Rong Ting added “Freesia” and indeed, one user was filtered out. She opened the page and was surprised. This user had 160,000 followers, but the profile picture was a misty snowy mountain. Looking at the content, it was almost all promotional material from the studio, never sharing daily life.
In the early days, there were only a few landscape photos, but the comments and shares were numerous. One photo was very atmospheric—a foggy lake surface with steam rising, next to a yurt, with colorful prayer flags fluttering.
Chen Baiyuan was still chattering, “She’s very low-key. If she posted more updates, maybe I’d be a fan. But she barely shows up, so there’s no way to be a fan.”
Sometimes a person looks very vivid in real life, but across the virtual network, they are just a layer of mist.
Ran Jiu’s Weibo comments had many loyal fans. Fans called her all sorts of names: Jiu Bao (Wine Baby), Jiu Zai (Wine Kid), Jiu Da (Big Wine), and some even called her ‘Wife.’ Ran Jiu usually only replied to the first few comments. The comments she responded to had high engagement and many likes, showing how much her fans liked her.
Rong Ting originally wanted to look for her work, but a voice from downstairs urged them. Chen Da asked them to come down.
Chen Baiyuan ran out immediately upon hearing about dinner. Rong Ting had no choice but to follow.
In the evening, Chen Da took them to a state banquet restaurant, ordering many small but extravagant dishes: traditional Lion’s Head Meatballs, Buddha Jumps Over the Wall, and Clear Water Cabbage. Rong Ting didn’t feel anything while eating, but her hands still trembled when she saw the shocking bill.
Chen Da signed the bill and, as they were leaving, urged Rong Ting to move into their house.
Chen Baiyuan liked her very much: “Cousin, please come over. I can also ask you questions.” She leaned in and whispered secretively: “I can tell you more gossip from the voice acting circle later. Want to hear?”
Rong Ting smiled and truthfully said that the lease on her newly rented apartment hadn’t expired yet, and it was also more convenient for her to get to school from there.
Chen Baiyuan pouted unhappily.
Chen Da, as a distant relative she hadn’t seen for a long time, had a warmth and patience that was enough to comfort her heart. This was the first time Rong Ting had experienced a sense of belonging since she had been in the capital, but she also knew she couldn’t casually live at someone else’s house.
Moreover, there was always a tugging feeling in her heart, making her want to go back.
Eventually, unable to resist the enthusiasm of the father and daughter, Rong Ting agreed to come once a week to tutor her. Chen Da had to temporarily give up and drove her back.
Before she reached the apartment complex gate, the pain in Rong Ting’s ankle started acting up again. She endured the sharp pain and went upstairs to her apartment. The lights were off inside when she opened the door. She fumbled her way into her bedroom and naturally didn’t notice if the person in the room next door was home or not.
She turned on the light in her room, collapsed weakly onto the bed, casually took off her socks, and applied the ointment.
The medicinal smell of the bruise ointment was strong. When rubbed onto the skin, a sharp pain slowly arose. Fortunately, the medicine started to take effect, and the dull, throbbing pain slowly disappeared.
Rong Ting had a thin layer of sweat on her forehead. She spaced out in the break after applying the medicine, sighing toward the ceiling.
Suddenly, she heard the door of the room next door open. She didn’t have time to clean up the mess on the floor and met Ran Jiu’s gaze at the doorway.
Rong Ting felt guilty when she remembered she had secretly checked her Weibo, “You came back quite early today.”
“Oh, I took the day off. I haven’t been out all day.” Ran Jiu replied, but her gaze slid down, landing on her swollen ankle, “What happened to your foot?”
Rong Ting looked disheartened: “Sprained it playing volleyball.”
Ran Jiu stared at her appearance and, for some reason, thought she looked like a pitiful lop-eared rabbit, both tragic and funny.
Rong Ting thought Ran Jiu would look at it for a few moments and then leave, but she saw her turn around and exit. The sound of running water came from the bathroom. After a long while, Ran Jiu returned with a basin of water. Rong Ting’s own towel was draped over the basin.
Rong Ting was stunned. She saw Ran Jiu soak the towel in the water several times, wring it out, and then move closer to her swollen and painful ankle.
“Hey, hey, wait, wait, wait—” The next second, Rong Ting couldn’t help but yelp.
The hot towel applied to the injury stimulated the original dull pain. The dual pain interwove, giving Rong Ting a feeling of her soul ascending.
“It’s fine. Don’t you know that a hot towel can relax muscles, promote bl00d circulation, and enhance the medicine’s effect?” Ran Jiu raised an eyebrow. She seriously massaged and pressed it for a long time, then turned back to re-soak the towel and re-apply it to her foot.
Rong Ting subconsciously tried to dodge, but clearly felt the other person’s grip was strong. Despite her hands being slenderer than Rong Ting’s, they held her calf, making her unable to move, a feeling of forcefulness.
Fortunately, after the initial burst of pain, the ankle gradually felt more comfortable. Later, when the water cooled, Ran Jiu brought another basin of hot water and continued to apply it to the injury.
Rong Ting felt too embarrassed. She pressed the towel herself. Ran Jiu didn’t insist, released her hand, and instead propped her chin on her hands, watching her.
Rong Ting sat on the bed, and Ran Jiu squatted on the floor. Their gazes met in the air, one high and one low.
Ran Jiu’s eyes no longer held the drunken confusion of yesterday. They were very clear now, as if waiting for her to explain yesterday’s events.
Rong Ting sighed: “A very beautiful older sister sent you back yesterday and said you were ‘milk drunk’ (zui nai).”
Hearing this, Ran Jiu laughed immediately, “Milk drunk? Little one, do you know what that means? You shouldn’t say that casually.”
Rong Ting’s face flushed with anxiety. She hurriedly explained: “I didn’t say it. That older sister… Forget it. She also said your studio had a gathering, and you drank eggnog, which is why you ended up like that.”
“Mmm.” Ran Jiu suddenly lifted her eyelids to look at her, “So you know what I do now?”
What she did…
Did…
The way she phrased it was flippant. A similar scene of a killer needing to silence someone flashed through Rong Ting’s mind, “Uh, you didn’t say before. I thought you didn’t want me to know. If you didn’t say it, I would never have known. Actually, I think this job is great, it’s cool…” The more she explained, the more confused she became, and her voice gradually trailed off.
“If you know, you know.” Ran Jiu splashed the water in the basin, “I didn’t say it because I was too lazy to explain to an outsider. After all, what you think is good, others might see as not doing an honest job.”
Rong Ting quickly asked: “How could it not be an honest job? Who would think that?”
“Many people.” Ran Jiu’s tone was light, like cooling water slowly losing its warmth, “Alright, I’ll pour the water out. You apply some more medicine and go to sleep early.”
Rong Ting nodded: “Goodnight, you should also go to bed early.”
She was relieved in her heart, grateful that Ran Jiu wasn’t dwelling on yesterday’s incident.
Ran Jiu suddenly stopped, still holding the basin steady, “Rong Ting?”
“Hmm?” Suddenly called by name, Rong Ting looked up blankly.
“When I’m busy with work and come back late, will I disturb you?”
Rong Ting’s heart pounded violently, “No, you won’t disturb me.”
“Oh, I see.” Ran Jiu’s eyelashes drooped, a faint hint of disappointment in her manner.
For some reason, Rong Ting’s heart felt pricked by the tip of a feather. She suddenly changed her mind: “But I hope you come back earlier. We can eat together then.”
A smile bloomed on Ran Jiu’s lips, “Okay.”
