Chapter 15: Getting Sick
Su Shixiao was woken up by the phone ringing early in the morning. He threw back the quilt, irritably grabbed his phone, and answered, “Calling me this early in the morning? Isn’t that annoying? Say what you need to say quickly.”
“Hahaha, my bad. I just wanted to ask you to come with me to the amusement park,” He Junsui’s hearty voice came through the phone.
“No, I’m not going. You’re too old for the amusement park,” Su Shixiao refused without thinking.
“Hey, amusement parks have rides for adults too, alright?” He Junsui continued to pester him. “Xiao Xiao, please! I already bought the tickets, and I heard the haunted house there is huge, and they also have an illusion room. It’s exciting and fun.”
“I’m not going.”
“If you go with me, I’ll go with you to see that art exhibition you mentioned last time.”
“I can go by myself—”
“That’s settled then! I’ll go with you to see the art exhibition, and you’ll go with me to the amusement park.”
“I said I’m not—”
“I’ll pick you up at nine. Gotta go, bye-bye.”
He Junsui didn’t give him a chance to speak, quickly finished his sentence, and hung up the phone.
Forget it. I’ll just treat it as a chance to relax.
Su Shixiao climbed out of bed to brush his teeth and wash his face before heading downstairs for breakfast.
“Why are you up so early today, Xiao Xiao?” Grandma Su asked.
“I’m going out later.” Su Shixiao glanced at his grandma, who was busy in the kitchen, and asked, “Grandma, what are you doing?”
“I’m heating milk for Xiao Bei. He should be coming downstairs soon,” Grandma Su turned and opened the fridge. “I’m making milk tea for him to drink. Do you want some, Xiao Xiao?”
“Just a cup of hot milk will be fine, thank you, Grandma.”
“Alright, Grandma will heat it for you now.”
Su Shixiao and He Junsui reached their destination at ten o’clock. They went to the haunted house first, and He Junsui clung to Su Shixiao the entire time. Su Shixiao was quite disgusted; he naturally disliked being touched by others. If it weren’t for He Junsui being his long-time friend, he wouldn’t have let him cling to him.
They played through about half of the amusement park, then ate lunch right there. Afterward, they went on some water rides, and both their clothes got quite soaked. In the afternoon, it suddenly poured rain. The two on the road had to run to a restaurant to take shelter. Their clothes were soaked, and the air conditioning inside the restaurant made it cold. After sitting for a few minutes, Su Shixiao felt chilly and let out a cough.
“Xiao Xiao, are you alright?” He Junsui asked worriedly when he saw him cough.
Su Shixiao smiled, seeing how concerned he was. “I’m fine, just cold.”
“Maybe we should leave. If it’s too cold here.”
“It’s okay, not too cold. Let’s stay here until the rain stops, then we’ll go to a nearby shop to buy new clothes to change into.”
“Mmm, the rain should be stopping soon.”
The rain only stopped an hour later. Su Shixiao felt his body finally warming up after leaving the restaurant. They left the amusement park, found the nearest clothing store, bought new clothes, and changed. It was already past six in the evening.
In the car, He Junsui was driving and asked, “What do you want to eat, Xiao Xiao? My treat, to thank you for coming to the amusement park with me today.”
Su Shixiao rested his head on his hand, looking out the window. Hearing his words, he turned his head. “No need to thank me. Didn’t you say you’d go with me to the art exhibition?”
“But you got soaked in the rain today, so I won’t be polite. I want a seafood feast.”
“Sure, don’t be shy. Eat as much as you want.”
On the way home, Su Shixiao began to feel a little warm, and his head felt dizzy.
When they reached his doorstep, he got out of the car and rubbed his forehead. He Junsui saw this and asked, “You’ve been holding your forehead since we left, and your face is a little red. You wouldn’t be running a fever, would you?”
Su Shixiao didn’t think he had a fever, just a cold at most. “I’m fine. I’ll just take some cold medicine when I get back.”
“Mmm, remember to tell me if anything happens.”
Su Shixiao nodded. “Bye.”
He opened the door and entered, seeing his grandparents watching TV in the living room, neither noticing him. He felt uncomfortable and just wanted to go back to his room to shower and sleep. He didn’t disturb them and went upstairs alone.
He felt utterly exhausted, and his head was throbbing. He endured the discomfort to take a shower. After leaving the bathroom, he felt his body temperature was even higher, and he was completely cold and uncomfortable all over. Shivering, he burrowed under the covers.
Could He Junsui have been right? Do I have a fever?
He had to reach out and fumble for a while before finding his phone. He groggily opened it and sent a voice message to He Junsui,
“Xiao Sui, I think I really have a fever. Could you quickly come and take me to the hospital?”
After speaking, he forced himself to get up despite the discomfort to find clothes to wear, and he put on a jacket.
Nan Yanzhou had been called home by his parents today and was about to take a shower when he received Su Shixiao’s message. He had been friends with Su Shixiao for two or three weeks but hadn’t seen him send a message before. He was a little surprised, and seeing it was a voice message made him even more curious.
He tapped on the voice message and heard his soft, gentle, and delicate voice. His eyebrows twitched, and he was momentarily stunned. The voice of the person who usually spoke in a cool tone was now somewhat pleasant to listen to.
“Xiao Sui, I think I really have a fever. Could you quickly come and take me to the hospital?”
Hearing his words, Nan Yanzhou frowned. He sent it to the wrong person.
He has a fever. No wonder his voice is so soft.
He sent a message to Su Shixiao.
Nan Feng: Why didn’t you tell your brother? Isn’t your brother home?
Nan Feng: It would be faster if your brother took you to the hospital.
Su Shixiao groggily read the messages. The thought of telling his family made him resist from the bottom of his heart.
“No, don’t tell them. If you won’t take me, I’ll go myself.”
Due to his illness, he felt a little wronged, and his voice sounded incredibly pitiful.
Nan Yanzhou listened to the voice message, and his heart felt as if it had been lightly scratched.
Forget it. His house is quite close to the Su family’s anyway.
Nan Feng: Then go wait for me by the entrance now. I’ll be there in ten minutes.
Su Shixiao felt completely unwell and wasn’t thinking clearly, so he didn’t question it. He obediently went to the main gate to wait.
Nan Yanzhou drove up to the Su family’s gate and saw Su Shixiao squatting by the entrance, looking utterly miserable.
His brows involuntarily furrowed. He quickly got out of the car. “Su Shixiao, how are you feeling?”
Su Shixiao saw the car had arrived and quickly stood up. He heard Nan Yanzhou’s voice, quickly looked up, and couldn’t believe it was him.
“Mr. Nan, why are you here?”
Nan Yanzhou saw his pale face and sweaty forehead. He pulled him into the car and fastened his seatbelt. “You sent me a message, what do you think?”
Su Shixiao was dragged into the car, looking utterly confused. Hearing his words, he took out his phone and saw that he had indeed sent the message to the wrong person.
“I’m sorry, I sent it to the wrong person.”
“Sit tight. I need to drive faster,” Nan Yanzhou made a U-turn. “Otherwise, I’m afraid you’ll get burnt out.”
Su Shixiao felt very cold. He hugged himself and didn’t clearly hear what Nan Yanzhou said.
